I haven't been able to get I to any of the BNL albums since Steven left. His songwriting was what elevated the band from something average to some fantastic. The way he could blend seriousness and humour within a couple of lines is something special. Steven's solo stuff is unfortunately severely underrated and underappreciated. He has released several songs which are as good as anything put out by BNL.

I totally agree, But I mean, that said. All in Good Time was seriously good. Everything past that has felt lacking in some way. There have been moments here and there where BnL still does amazing work, but as time goes by without Paige, those moments feel fewer and further between. I got the sense that Paige had to grapple with serious issues, and when you combined that with the rest of the band, it created something that really reflected the human condition.

Not sure why BNL affects me so much. They just have this ability to reach into the soul. That's why they are so beloved far and wide. I have mixed feelings with all of this. Yes I'm so excited for them and for the possibility of a joint performance but it drudges up 10 years of feelings of loss over the break up. As a long time loyal fan from about 1997, I've been to dozens of concerts and have bought everything pre and post Steve (and of Steve's). The band is always awesome but they are somehow missing a key ingredient no matter how you slice it. Like you made a dish and forgot to add something important to the recipe. It may look like the dish but something is just not there. I listen to each of them interviewed separately here and it's nice, polished almost, but it reminds me of what could have been, both in making music together and performances I've seen as a foursome. 10 years! Lost. On one hand do I think they will get back together and catch up and make new albums to dazzle me? It's probably a tall order, but to witness them perform the classics together regularly (Jane, Old Apartment, everything from Stunt!) that would be worth it all! Even if they didn't make a single new song together going forward. That's probably selfish and unrealistic to say all this. After all, they have their own stories and reasons for splitting that we may never truly learn but the BNL is not just theirs anymore. It part of all of us who love them dearly and we have a stake in seeing them back together. Let's not let any more wasted time go by. 143 BNL!
@daniaparkinson9013

Did you write this for me? I feel I could have written this exact comment. BNL has been with me (or I've been with them?) since their infancy and, I'm not sure why they affect me so much and why their break up pulled at my heartstrings as much as it did. A lot of their music followed me through my earlier years, and I can pinpoint exact places I was/points in my life where I was when their songs were played. I saw them so many times, but I stopped listening when they broke up. Not because I was upset, but because Steven Page's voice is quintessential BNL. They all have amazing voices and are fantastic in their own right, but Steven Page's voice provided the angelic voice that I fell in love with. Now I'm crying.
@eVreckd
6 жыл бұрын
You know I never quite figured out or pieced together why they really broke up. 'You run away' seemed to pin it on Steven but I'm just not sure anymore. If he had issues, why didn't they do enough support him and stick together? Isn't that what brothers do? I've heard each (or both) say in interviews that this was like a marriage and divorce, but if your loved one is struggling, and it's worth saving then you do the work. After all, there are the kids (fans) to think of! Sometimes I read these long winded comments I make on BNL videos and say WTF!? Why do I go through the trouble of expressing my thoughts on these guys? But as we've all said, BNL is not just another band to us. They've touched us in some great way and maybe it's just therapy for fans. I agree they will probably not reunite. At least not like what we knew. That's painful since to fans it's a simple formula and to the band it's a complex one.

Barenaked ladies were there for me through happy times, sad times, and some very dark times. I saw them several times with Steven in the band and once without. I will always love them however when I saw them without Steven, it felt like something was missing. Great interviews, superb editing - and such a wonderful thing to get BNL on stage together again. Sure, BNL has of course been BNL without Steve - just not the same BNL that I feel in love with. No matter if this was truly a reunion or not, I applaud Ed and the band for letting Steve in - and I applaud Steve for going through with it. They were great and without Mr page the music group would be like if the Beatles didn't have John Lennon

It’s unfair to Steve to position him as the Lennon of the group - while at one time Steve may have had a similar, Nilsson-esq taste for partying that Lennon did, Steven Page is unquestionably a far kinder, more well adjusted, friendlier, and just all around better human being than phoney-baloney Lennon never, ever hoped to be 📠

This interview is ridiculous. No talk of the great years of the band between the Blow up in the mid nighties to the breakup. Just went strait from yoko to the breakup. Sad
