The point of this scene was to show that both childhoods were bad Steven’s dad (greg) grew up with no freedom always constantly getting shamed never being able to do anything he wants while Steven grew up in a van always going through hard sittuations and dangerous missions
@steampunkemo9211
Жыл бұрын
Exactly. It's two extremes, neither got the childhood anyone should have. Greg was restricted of EVERYTHING he enjoyed, he lived in a prison. Steven grew up with no restrictions, absolutely free. But it's not as much freedom as it is no control. Humans *need* some level of control and routine in their life, it's what we are made for. We need patterns, we need stability. The amount of stability needed is different for everyone, but everyone needs it. Steven grew up with the gems always gone, never knowing when they would be back. As he grew, he was included in dangerous missions that gave no certainty that anyone would make it back home ALIVE. I understand Greg wanted Steven to be free, but this is borderline NEGLECT. He left him to the gems to care for, aliens who admittedly have no clue what to do with a human child. But not even just that, he didn't have a PHYSICIAN? He didn't have SCHOOL? It would be MIRACLE if Steven can do basic math, and he is 18. Does he even have a legal name? Legal documents? Does he even have a driver's LICENSE? Greg should be in JAIL. I know he loves Steven and wanted the best but this is straight up neglect. Hell, he had won a FORTUNE and he STILL didn't put steven in school. even the online option he offered, that never happened! Greg is a great uncle, but he is a god awful parent. "My problem isn't that I'm a gem. My problem is that I'm a UNIVERSE!" The demayos had stability. A normal human life. Stevens real uncle, he has plans and is supposedly a responsible adult. The gems are aliens who honestly did pretty good with Steven, considering they will never fully understand what a human child needs from a guardian. Not saying they are innocent, but Steven should have been GREG's responsibility! Steven is Greg universe's son and he was given no control. No stability. Which is something I think he desperately would have benefited from mentally since his whole linkage is tied to a galactic war that is threatening his life, family, and home

I don't know much of the lore anymore, but I do know that most of the things that happened to them came from Stevens choices, one way or another. Him wanting to go on adventures with them, him wanting to go back for the gems when Jasper Came to earth, his choice when he brought Greg to Korea to find the Palanquin, and his choice to go to homeworld. It all was his choice, and if it wasn't for that intergalactic peace would've never existed, he never would've taught the bad guys to change. Greg didn't make Steven do that, Steven chose that, and the real fact is, he's completely different from every other human, to where no human knew what to do.

It is good that Greg told steven he isn't mad at him for what he did, but that's not necessarily what steven needed or wanted. Steven wanted Greg to support him as a father, telling him when he makes mistakes and how to guide him through his issues. Greg instead just tells him how much better off Steven's life is than his was, without trying to understand his issues. Greg thinks that Steven's life was better off, but it doesn't feel like that to him. Steven needs advice on what to do, and Greg isn't providing that for him.
@nahlies2382

@@JoeArty I mean it's also kind of hard to properly parent a child who's constantly under the much more respected care of 4 super heroes, all of which are far more physically capable of handling any possible superpowered outbursts of a child/teenager going through literally the most unprecedented life in the history of the world. Nobody knows what could happen to a human gem hybrid, and it's impossible to treat someone capable of actually (near)killing you with a thought and then spitting your wounds healed within the same action as if they need to listen to you. Greg could've tried more, but honestly with hindsight taken out of the equation, how could he have possibly known leaving his son with the guardians was a bad idea? And in retrospect, if he DID have that normal life, wouldn't the world have been long destroyed by now? Steven saved so many lives, including his own, because of how his dad chose to raise him

@@StarLightGem Just because they felt awkward around Greg doesn’t really excuse Greg not being there. Steven is HIS son. Not theirs. I understand Steven living with the Gems for protection, but if thats what its about then Greg should have stayed, awkwardness or not. No amount of “awkwardness” should stop a parent from caring for their child. Greg knew the gems didn’t understand how to raise children, Greg knew Steven was getting into Gem activities, Greg sees Steven less than the Gems, overall Greg should have done better. @alexwilliams2276
7 күн бұрын
@@nicolaberry9550 It technically does excuse Greg from not being there. When he actively around Greg was trying to prevent him from those missions. Young Steven stressed all the time that he was a Crystal Gem! Of course I doubt his mom nor Greg knew that homeworld would come back in the fashion they did. Yet they both of his parents could’ve planned more for a hybrid son like their’s. There’s even an episode that showcases that Greg is often ignored because he’s human and he’s aloof-Mirror Gem & equally the wailing stone song. I think we as fans forget how much the Gems despised Greg. Garnet was a lot more understanding but that couldn’t be said for Pearl & Amethyst. Greg making the choice to leave his son with the Gems was ultimately a good choice in the respect on them fostering his powers. Yet, he should’ve put his foot down more (even seek therapy) to stand up to the Gems. You have to really look at this scene from both perspectives. It’s not necessarily that either one is wrong, yet Steven did have too much freedom but his Dad his definitely been concerned and said no to the Gems before. He rescued Steven when his was a baby, told Pearl he’s not going to space, grounded Steven (alongside the Gems), told him to not go onto that Snowy adventure with the Gems, told him to not go onto adventures with Gems, questioned his son’s safety with the Gems, even tried to evacuate his son during the monster invasion episode. The laser light cannon episode is a prime example of the Gems underestimating Greg and equally his relationship with Rose. That fact that she trusted him with that device says a lot. Could Greg have put his foot down more? Absolutely! But I wouldn’t say that he hasn’t throughout the show. Greg had to accept his son was different when his gem glowed as a baby. He had to accept too that way Steven was going to be raised was not in the same format as him schools, doctors, etc as a Gem. That doesn’t mean that Steven wasn’t receiving care-it just wasn’t in the traditional way. Greg also had to accept the fact that no matter how much he loved his son that he had to trust his instincts. But that man never stopped caring him. He’s guilty of neglect to a certain degree because human side should’ve been considered more and so are the Gems. Yet,I feel that had homeworld not came to Earth we would’ve seen a less traumatized Steven.

Telling Steven that "he had it easy compared to Greg," always made me so uncomfortable. I think their traumas are so genuinely incomparable. Sure, it sucks growing up and not having too much freedom as a kid. That structure your parents put in place is usually an indication of how much they love you and how much they want to keep you safe, though. By the time Greg was an adult, he was already sort of making bad choices. He gave all his money and time to a manager who was a pretty rude person, not too great of a guy. He instantly left him in the pursuit of a girl who treated him like a commodity and refused to understand him as a person. He felt alienated by Rose but he was captivated by her beauty. He let her do whatever she wanted because he was transfixed by it. Greg made poor choices. Perhaps it was a reflection of his childhood; he grew up in a house that felt suffocating so it felt freeing to make mistakes, to do whatever he wanted no matter the expense. I can't help but be grossed out at how this ideology just sort of... followed Steven into his childhood? He had a baby with an alien, who told him that the second Steven came into the world she could no longer exist. Why did Greg even do this? He had essentially no head on his shoulders, no money, no education of his own, and the only people who could help him were... other aliens! Other aliens who did not like him. Other aliens who did not want Greg around. Not only did Rose become an absent mother the second of Steven's conception, but Greg was an absent father for the sake of Steven's comfort. The gems had a house, money, transportation, and much more. Greg had a van. Aliens don't know how to raise a child, though. The gems are born with the ability to know exactly what their place is and how to do it. Greg was weird for treating his half human son... like an alien! No doctors, no teachers, no school, no other children his age. He lived in a van or that little house on the beach. The gems didn't want him meddling in gem stuff but they couldn't help it when the house was crawling with infected gems at all times. They were constantly putting him in danger, emotionally abusing a child for reacting to the consistent trauma he was being put through day in and day out. His mother's demons came back to haunt him, he had to deal with people physically trying to kill him, believing that he may actually be his mother, getting flashbacks in bodies that weren't his, all of these things that a kid should never have to experience, over and over and over again. *And they would get angry at him for it.* Steven was not allowed to feel emotions, to process things how a child should. He would get chewed out, yelled at. Every adult around him had the need to tell this poor child, that they knew more than him even at the expense of his own feelings. Greg did not have to deal with almost getting murdered, watching people almost get killed, he didn't have to deal with getting trapped in space with another being that wants to kill you. He didn't have to make that decision of throwing them into space because the second he admits who he truly is, what his intentions and feelings are, the gem sprung into kill mode. Greg did not have to deal with any of these things as a child. Not one time did Steven ever hear, "you don't have to do this. There's nothing you have to prove. I can teach you about your mom in a way that's safer for you." He was constantly met with dishonesty, jealousy, anger, and lying. Everyone around him was so deceitful all the time. It was no wonder he grew to become anxious and angry. How could Steven NOT? Greg had actively worsened Steven emotionally for his own benefit; pretending his leg was still broken and making Steven become unsure of his powers. There were so many moments of being self centered on Greg's side. Steven should've never had to heal that rock in the first place, but the fact that he was getting a grip on his powers and his father immediately felt the need to confuse a child for his own benefit? There were so many moments watching interactions between the gems and Steven, or between Steven and his father that i was so annoyed. They had no care in fucking up a kid as long as they got the final word in. Even now, there Steven is. Hes stressed, he's anxious, he's mad and having a panic attack, telling his father how their parenting styles fucked him up as a child. He wanted nothing more than a curfew and a nice meal, and what is he being told? "You're wrong, because i had that and I didn't like it. I was so much worse off than you." No adult in this show can put down their pride for a second just to LISTEN to this poor child. They can't communicate with him, they refuse to understand him. Its heartbreaking.

I think its easier to understand Greg's position when it comes to his views on how to raise Steven when you understand that they aren't really his views to begin with. To be clear, Steven comes from two worlds and should have had the benefits that came from both as his birthright, but that was never going to happen smoothly. And whatever Greg may have felt about how to raise Steven would have been overshadowed by the influence of the Crystal Gems. His first child, without the support of his wife, family and with such a fundamental lack of understanding of gem culture, as well as his own insecurities about raising a kid considering his own childhood, we can understand why he may have been more easily persuaded by the gems to leave Steven in their care. And I do mean persuaded, because Greg has always been shown to be an eager participant in Stevens growth, and wanting to be in his life, even to an extreme case in the episode where they duct tape the giant bubble formation that had a giant crack in it (I don't remember it very well, but i remember that part). Greg is always being discouraged and undermined by the gems however, constantly being told that Steven is not like anything ever seen before and otherwise being ostracized by the gems due to their preconceptions about him and his capabilities. To summaries, Greg probably would have tried harder to give Steven a normal childhood if he wasn't primed to believe that he couldn't do it, either because of his own capabilities or because it wouldn't benefit Steven.

As a die hard SU fan, this scene hit hard. After watching the OG series you never really realize that all he needs is a normal life and to be on Earth. From the whole entire show, and this sequel, this is my 2nd favorite scene because it shows how all he really wanted to be was normal, he never wanted to be special, he wanted to be loved and protected and have a normal life. Even though he wants things to be normal, they never will be, yet he is able to stand up in the morning after experiencing so much trauma, and has the ability to laugh it off (except here ofc). He can live through not having his wants, because he knows that he never will have his dream of being normal and that’s ok. That whole second series was the masterpiece we needed to end the series after the OG series because it shows what happens to people after so much trauma and how to help yourself. It’s not really about Steven, it’s about mental health and how badly it can affect a person. If you haven’t watched the show, watch it now. It is just a cartoon in the beginning, but by the time your finished you will be shocked at how they could write such a masterpiece.

I feel so much the opposite of this. My mom grew up with freedom and was allowed to do pretty much anything. What she did with it was drugs and having a baby at 18 (me.) My mom wanted to give me a much safer life. So the farthest barrier I can stretch is to the internet with my phone, which she used to check. And then I sleep- sometimes I'm not allowed to do that though because it isn't good for me to do it too much and also very often she needs me supervising my little half-brothers. I can't wait to leave to college honestly. My stepdad is on board with it and seems to believe in me at least. :)

He has been through so much even when he was a toddler. But I think the real reason Greg (Steven’s dad) didn’t make Steven go through what greg did is bc Steven might not have the easy way out of situations, but Greg didn’t have any. So he wanted Steven to make life better for himself instead of doing the same thing greg’s parents do

“You’re better off than I was” Does Greg seriously not understand what Steven has been through after all this time ? Stevens mom died to have him, Greg’s mom made him meatloaf “too” consistently. Steven literally had to dismantle a government full of space hitlers that wanted him dead, Greg had to participate in extracurricular activities he didn’t want to do. How can you say that to a kid who’s a victim to multiple attempted murders, some by his own family, and is depended upon by thousands to even millions of aliens at the age of 17.

I was watching this episode and couldn't stop feeling so sorry for Steven. People put him on a pedestal that he is a amazing child no worries. He was the therapist friend the carefree one the one you could lean on. He also needs a friend like that. When he turned corrupted Amythest said," Want to know who would be amazing at bringing back to people to who they are?" They all replied who? "STEVEN" Steven just wants freedom to be a kid that he couldn't be.

Greg wasn’t the best dad, he didn’t have enough rules and never really hung out with steven, dumping him on a bunch of gems who had no idea how to take care of a kid. Steven didn't have the right to compare his childhood and say Greg's was better. Understandable he had never had actual human childhood but Steven's trauma was with the gems, he shouldn't have taken it out on Greg, who raised his son the best he can and did his best to be nothing like his own parents raising him. Greg shouldn't have compared their childhoods either, but Steven was really on my nerves on this episode.

It affects us all within this corrupt system of “education" suicide rates are exponentially higher than before, kids are consuming alcohol and drugs, rushing into an adult hood of unprotected sex and the involvement of gun violence specifically targeting at schools. It’s not just that the child is undisciplined is that the child’s mental health haven’t even been checked out in by all means of therapy. (Which therapy is shit) but anyways it you get the point. When it comes to scene like this especially in a cartoon its a lot more deeper than you think.

@@Tamaska-ld3xj Dude, you are looking at steven as if he's some sortof goofy cartoon character, he's a child, a 14 year old child who was groomed into a thousand year old war, that stuff is traumatising. It is cool to us who don't go through that shit, but not to the person bleeding and suffering and risking their lives for something that they shouldn't even be involved in to begin with. Yourexcuse is literally the fact that HE HAS POWERS. ARE YOU SERIOUS. Do you realise what those powers cost. His mother, the same woman who got him involved into this, DIED. His power is LITERALLY HIS MOTHER'S CORPSE. LIKE DUDE. Imagine going to someone who fought World war one, and telling them they should be grateful they fought because of how 'cool it is'. That;s not only illogical, it's highly insensitive. No matter what powers you have, being stripped of a normal childhhod. Being stripped of a normal life, cannot be replaced with being ingrained into a war that invoLved the deaths of million AS A KID. Steven was rightfully justified in his anger.
