It's true that this doesn't really sound anything like Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. I think the point is just that it's a much "busier" production, with far more instruments and voices going on than the more stripped down version Lindsey produced for Say You Will. This has more of a lush, 1970s FM sound to it-which is no doubt why so many people like it so much.

He fell for her again, she watched it happen Every day, day by day But more important, night by night She watched it all come into play He held her hands, she listened to what he had to say Thrown down, like a barricade Maybe now he could prove to her That he could be good for her And they should be together You've shaken your faith in me, no You've shaken my faith in everything else A decision no one makes, and now you're going home Faith is a hard thing to hold on to Something inside you says I don't have to You're not like other people, you do what you want to You're not like other people, you do what you want to Thrown down, like a barricade Maybe now he could prove to her That he could be good for her And they should be together You say you're sorry Now you should walk away But it's so overwhelming, You have nothing left to say You can sit outside his door and wait Well, you can dedicate your pain to him Oh, thrown down, like a barricade Maybe now he could prove to her That he could be good for her And they should be together About just how much he never really told her Thrown down, About how difficult it had been to be without her Thrown down

Interesting that one whole verse is missing from this version. So the 2nd verse that is in it on the SYW version was added several years later. It's so painfully obvious that this song is referring not to their past relationship, but to a newer (at the time) rekindled relationship.

I like Stevie taking the higher parts on the chorus in this version. I think there's enough of a difference to tell that her vocals were re-recorded for the one that landed on SYW...or, maybe not all, but at least a lot of them. This song, no matter which version, is one of her best! "He fell for her again, she watched it happen. Every day, day by day...but, more important, NIGHT BY NIGHT". Now, go pull up all the interviews from when the band was reuniting for The Dance, prior to the filming, and pull up performances from different stops on that tour... Tell me you don't FEEL these lyrics!!

Yes, the line, "...He held her hands, she listened to what he had to say..." took place in 1997, when the two were alone in a hotel dining room, around 10pm, talking about their time from The 1960s up to The 1980s, when everything fell apart. He apparently apologized for his behavior, going all the way back to 1976...she forgave him, and she wondered, for a moment, could they really be soul mates, and did it take 20 years for them to realize it...or, was it just nostalgia, reunion, and closure all happening at the same time? Stevie believed the latter, so she made certain that nothing further happened. I remember, at the time, someone in the media asked her if the old flame of their romance could be rekindled in this new Fleetwood Mac renaissance...and, Stevie abruptly declared, "Not if I can help it..." Barricades.

This is the Trouble In Shangri-la version of the song, originally inc. on the full-length version of the album, before she had to cut songs due to copyright royalties and album length. As much as I love the Say You Will version, I wish this had been the first single from Stevie's solo album...it would have been a Top 10 radio hit, and might have garnered her a first Grammy win as an individual recording artist. I believe the song features Lindsey, Mick, and John.

Usually she has the girl background singers on her solo songs...so maybe it wasn't a good fit for her solo album with Lindsey on it.
@anthonyyoutubefan7567
2 жыл бұрын
@@focusedfreebird But, even in this original version, Lori and Sharon are on it, doing the background voices. The problem was, she had recorded like 16 songs for the album, and, at the time, the rule was that CDs and LPs could only have copyrights for 12 songs (going back to the original 45 to 47 minute running time for vinyl records), so, Stevie was forced to cut 3 songs off of the album, with this being one of them. She said it hurt her to remove the songs, since they fit the theme of the album. Oddly enough, it seems, by like 2005, that rule was taken away from album releases.

So many people in couples are NOT good for each other because that isn't why they got together in the first place (guilty your Honor), whereas the irony involved here is, bands DO think about that, and this band still imploded. The Say You Will version is far better. I can't believe Mick, Lindsey and John are playing on this version -- such a lousy song arrangement. It doesn't take much to understand why the song was scrapped. It took Lindsey to take the song to a totally different place.

The more produced version of the demo is the real gem. Both this version and the final that made the cut on Say You Well are overproduced hot messes. Neither have the right tempo or serve the lyrical intent of the song. It's not a rocker like what is attempted here or a bopping pop song on SYW. It's introspective and should be more along the lines of Dreams or Michael Jackson's "Billy Jean". The word "Thrown" in the chorus is missing is growl, not the mention Lindsay is singing the melody here and Stevie the harmony on her own song. No!

So apparently Stevie wrote this after seeing Lindsey (as she believed) falling for her again during The Dance filming and tour. Clearly her ego loved that, as she wrote this rather smug song. But yea ahe burnt through tons of money and has less then other female artist like herself. Imagine if Stevie had learned to not spend all her money like she is still doing.
