I was at a Santana concert in Miami, early 90’s…Prince showed up at the end of the concert, more than half the people left, I stayed cause I was coming down from shrooms. Santana came out & tried to get everyone to come back in the concert cause Prince showed up & wanted to jam a little. It was me, my best friend & a handful of people left in the audience…and Prince & Santana on stage…pure magic. What a gift.

Amen. There is no doubt in my mind the greatest Super Bowl halftime moment was Prince singing Purple Rain....in the rain. Gives me goosebumps thinking about what a perfect moment in time it was. The show producers were so afraid and explained to Prince that it would definitely be raining during the halftime show. They asked him if there was anything they could do for him. His response, "Can you make it rain harder?" The ultimate professional. He left us way too soon and is sorely missed.

Prince was a consummate guitarist and musical genius. The song calls for rhythm guitar so that's what he plays. It's surprising how many guitarists that play very well are clueless when it comes to playing rhythm.

@@LukeMcCormick-cellear Yeah, it's in there the whole time after the tech replaced the dead cable. Prince is just playing a little bright sounding chuck chuck chuck-a-chuck rhythm. @@PhillipLandmeier Yes, Prince throws in a few fills. Unfortunately, Stevie completely drowns out the last one when he calls for the crowd to scream. They wouldn't have had a whole pedal board ready for Prince to make his typical lead sounds. But the rhythm "chucks" are classic Prince funk, and add to the song, making it dirtier and more danceable.

Ive heard of artists wanting to join a band on stage and not being able to because they couldn't find an amp or something ridiculous like that. Interestingly enough, Prince forbade anyone from playing Stevie Wonder records around him while he was recording he debut album. He didn't want to be influenced by the magnitude and sheer force of his music. Which is understandable when you are trying to find your own voice.

Possibly the most innovative genius in soul and pop music at the time… I don’t blame him at all for avoiding Stevie, as difficult as that sounds. I hardly listen to new music anymore. I always get too compulsive with scribbling notes and opening browser tabs, burdening myself with responsibility to evangelize lovely vibes to others. The upside is that I have a little more space to develop and share _my own_ musical vibes… I hope.

This sounds like BS. Prince would be kidding himself to think that he could avoid Stevie's influence simply by forbidding his music during recording. Stevie's music has been in the airwave since the mid-60's, and Prince grew up with constantly on the radio. Once it's in your brain, you can't just get rid of it by not playing it around you.

I could listen to Stevie all day and even if I tried to copy him, it wouldn't sound anything like him. But I can see where it might be a worry for a master who can cop anybody's licks.
