The best of Gospel-themed R & B merging with Pop! The fact that Stevie chose (or was requested) to sing this song at Michael Jackson's funeral speaks volumes. Soulfully-felt. Lyrically robust. Miraculous song.

I believe the interpretation of the first lines of the song: No more lying friends = there is no more friends who are liars. Wanting tragic ends = these liars want tragic ends (because they lie) Though they do pretend They won't go when I go Wonder says "they won't go when I go" -- possibly meaning they won't go to Heaven. The first is pretty obvious, but the second "wanting tragic ends" could mean "people consciously or unconsciously seeking death" or it could refer to judgmental people who want tragic death for other people.

They Won't Go When I Go, which harks back in sound to "Look Around," but in a more extended and encompassing version, with a similarly distinctly classical feel (the harmonic progression is very similar to Chopin's Etude Opus 10 number 4, measures 5 and 6, although at a much slower pace), its quasi-improvisatory piano part, and chilling flute-like T.O.N.T.O. creating its bleak, almost hopeless tone. Stevie's masterful arching vocal delivery above is all that makes the song so moving, increasing in anger and pain towards its middle section with his attack on sinners and corrupt politicians before dropping back to the quiet sadness at the start.

Stevie put the classical piano training he’d been doing to the test on this song! I think it goes nicely with the synth he layers on top in certain parts! Then ofc his voice sounds good as always! Sadder/more somber subject matter but I still really like this song :)

Uncharacteristically somber, accusatory, even, tone. I agree with Sifa on the tonal shift to a more contemporary approach, almost spitting, if at a more funereal pace, and preferring the idea of retaining the elegiac, almost dirge-like quasi-classical feel. I'm interested now to hear George Michael's cover/homage, as well as the version from M.J.'s funeral. I also agree with Dan on the whole album approach for context and contrast, even if the flow is dramatically staggered and protracted. I wonder if, say, a pre-batshit American-evangelical notion of the Rapture is in the mix. Unconnected perhaps, but this was a co-write with Yvonne Wright.

Nothing against George Michael, but when people say George’s version is better…I feel like it’s coded language. Stevie’s original is more raw …spiritual and haunting. George’s version just sounds a nice song. I prefer rawness in songs like this…not some perfectly pop production.
