I’ve had a Steyr L9-A1 for several months now and it’s quickly become my favorite pistol! I just stumbled onto a gently used M9-A1 at my local gun shop (a rare find!) at a great price and scooped it up. Can’t wait to try it this weekend. Love the trap sights and the low recoil - very accurate! Get one, you won’t be disappointed.

Big fan of the Steyr lineup, and used to own a few myself. They're definitely great for what they are, and they know they have a cult following. I think that Steyr would have a lot more success if they released a new updated generation, with just a few tweaks, and a couple changes to put them back in the running with some of the newer offerings. Deleting that key lock, improving the frame texturing, and maybe adding a real 1913 rail would make a world of difference. If they really wanted to go all the way, they couldn't slightly move the position of the extractor so that you are able to know the slide to properly fit a Red Dot. With the current model, the only one you can fit is The Shield RMS because it's so tiny. Being able to put an RMR or a DeltaPoint Pro on a gun like this would definitely put it back in the running for me

I had a Steyr M40A1 a few years back, and trading that in was a big mistake. The M9A1 looks as tanklike and well made as the M40A1 was, and the ridiculously low bore axis along with the trapezoidal sights make it a great choice for any use. Thanks for a thorough review, and as usual the “What’s For Dinner” portion is a great addition!

My favorite hand gun. Mine is an older Gen 4. It doesn't like the federal brass 115 grain ammo at Walmart. It doesn't extract all of the rounds. It shoots everything else I've put through it though. I hope they're planning a Gen 5 with some of the modern tweaks that our latest striker fire guns have.

I'm a little disappointed you didn't utilize the 'combat reload' feature on that pistol. But I can tell you, my L9 with 2800 rounds through it, only had a problem, firing Winchester steel ammo. Since 1000 rounds, I've installed a Ranger Point brass front counter weight, and steel guide rod, and she fires like butter, with minimal nose flip. The sights are only as good, as you use them. IMO, the tip of the triangle should be horizontal to the top of the trapezoidal side lines. It's the straightest pistol I've ever shot. 17 + 1 is nice too. Well worth it's price. Magazines are some what pricy though. It has the same designer as Glock, Canik, and Caracal .

Very nice and specific review on ammo. Maddy´s review was particularly interesting because i got very small hands and a womans perspective on reaching controls without problem are good news for me. I got the oportunity to purchase this gun or the bersa thunder pro 9 with i like because it got hammer and decocker but they told me that metal finish is not that good and i live in a shore and cold city in wich humidity is a problem, so polimer (even if i dont like that much) is a very good alternative. eloquent usage of the word ""Omnivore"" . explained the effectiveness in a single word. thorough presentation. great job. my pleasure to view.thanks. originally i am a staunch .45 guy and i reluctantly opted for a Steyr L9-A1 with higher magazine capacity and the higher velocity over a .45, for home defence. L9-A1 is great. but on seeing your video i am intrigued if i missed a valid point, if a .45 will be more preferable than a 9mm, with a lesser grain bullet and naturally a higher velocity and will have better stopping power as a home defence with the likes of CZ 97 BD even if you have to stop assailants with vests!?!? i of course understand .45 vs 9mm is an age-old thing; interested to know your thoughts because i feel you do a thorough job.
@GBGuns
5 жыл бұрын
I used to be a .45 guy, but now carry a 9. For me it came down to 9mm costing less per round, offering higher capacity in smaller firearms. Economically it just makes more sense. They're both good rounds and shot placement will almost alwas be more important than caliber.

Have they done anything to improve the grip texture? To me, Steyr seems to be more interested in being different, than being successful. People that own them, love them. Another KZitemr told me the trigger is superior to the Walther PPQ, the Canik TP9 SA and the CZ P10C. If that is true, why not improve the grip texture, lose the gimmicky, trapezoidal sights; and dominate, or at least challenge for dominance in the market? They've been around long enough, where they could have already been a runner up to Glock. I say these things because there is a lot to like about the Steyrs; but I am unwilling to make compromises, when the market has so many great offerings, ready to go right out of their boxes.
@halfdollar86

Trae UCity that’s a large claim saying it’s better than every single one of those triggers. Not saying it’s not because I have not fired the Steyer but I have shot all the others.

@MatteoSixSeventyFour
6 жыл бұрын
Trae UCity No. And honestly its really not needed. Especially when you consider that as soon as you do many will complain about the texture being too rough. If you don't think you're getting enough traction. Do what many do. Get or have it stippled. Or get some type of traction grips. Problem solved. As for those "gimmicky" trapazoid sights? Have you tried them? They're not gimmicky. They work extremely well at getting you on target quickly if you can get acclimated to them. And yes I would stack the trigger against many guns. I've owned several Walthers, and Caniks. Only one I have owned is the P-10c. I currently own 5 Steyrs, with the S40 and a 4" 357 Sig & 40 barrel as my daily carry. And am looking to get another. Might get another M. But who knows. BTW I spoke with several reps at Steyr. The problem is headquarters doesn't want to push them. Their primary focus is on their rifles, not their pistols. Until the leadership changes or they see a drive in the market for their pistols this isn't going to change.

Does anyone have an issue with the slide sticking on theirs. When I pull the slide back no mag in of course it sticks I'll pull it a couple of times then it'll go back or if I pull the trigger holding it down and simultaneously pull the slide back it goes back no problem its weird to me is that an issue or is that normal for this gun.
@cbwelch4

Jason Kidd I just got mine. I noticed in the past two range trips if I don’t deliberately pull the slide all the way back racking it, it sometimes won’t go fully into battery. At that point a slap with the heel of my palm to the back of the slide fixes it.
