As someone who has been interested in Aviation and aerospace technology since I was a child, thank you for making these videos! This kind of perspective is rarely seen, and your passion for what you do really shines through in the things you show us and how you explain them. I really appreciate everything you do, taking whatever opportunity you have to show us fascinating parts of your job. It could be helpful to add a simple disclaimer at the beginning of the videos stating that you are showing a small slice of *many* moving parts and procedures involved in aircraft maintenance, and that it would be impossible to film every single procedure and task. Perhaps something like that will belay the concerns of people in the comments who don't understand how complicated this process can be.

The C-40's fly into KGON a lot as well as B757's (AKA C-32). I got a video on my youtube of one landing a few weeks ago. They are modified B737-700's with fuel tank modifications to carry more fuel as well as UARRSI for in-flight refueling. It has a modified communications suite as well as military communication equipment like SATCOM, TACAN's, etc. They also have the short field operations upgrade kit applied. They also are equipped with a RWR and CMS system in case they are engaged in hostile combat and can get out of the area and defend itself.

Quick question, Do they have to open the windows on the cars when they are transporting them on cargo planes to avoid the windows from smashing under pressurisation, like how your bag of chips inflate when your in the air.
@StigAviation

There is no pressure involved, the cargo compartments are all pressurized. I think they keep the windows open in order to have access to move the wheels if they need to offload the vehicle.

The C-32 (B757-200) carries the VP, First Lady, and other individuals at the high cabinet level (Secretary of State, etc). The C-40C (B737-700 BBJ) is a mobile command center. It contains all sorts of classified communications tech and whatnot. I think this is a C-40C, not a C-40B based on the antenna. Either way, someone important is in town. Probably VP, based on the fact that the C-40 was accompanying. The C-32 is only Air Force Two when the VP is onboard. Sometimes, the C-32 will carry POTUS if the VC-25 can't get to the airport POTUS is travelling to.

While he is correct about the vortex generator, the way it works is by doing just what the name says. A vortex will stick to the top of the wing in a way that turbulent air won’t, and it has a nice side effect of sucking nearby air into it thus eliminating even more turbulence. It’s most useful during higher angles of attack where the engine especially disturbs the air.

Yup. Contrails (~26:19). Condensate trails. The products of combustion of a hydrocarbon fuel (kerosene, in this case) are CO2 & steam. A gas turbine is really a gas turbine/steam turbine. It exhausts hot CO2 and superheated steam, hence contrails.

Remember, when I showed that big dome up top, that’s the Wi-Fi antenna, that’s usually how you can get on online and watch live streaming broadcast. But the movies and TV stuff works off of a hard drive that’s installed on the aircraft. They update those once a month. So if you don’t have Internet, you can always watch the onboard entertainment. The 757 is designated C-32 and comes in two flavors, A and B. A is used for Special Air Missions ("SAM" is also their callsign/flight number). When the SAM is the vice president the callsign is changed to AF2. Otherwise any other dignitary could be on board. The ("gatekeeper") B-version is the one that raises eyebrows. They're entirely white have constantly changing "tail numbers" or none at all and are used for all kinds of 007 type stuff. The 737-700 carries the Military designation C-40 ("Clipper") and has three main variants. C-40A (white with gold and blue cheatlines) for the Navy's fleet logistics support squadrons. They are combi versions of the -700 and are only sporting 70 seats in the back. The Marines got their hands on a few too but they're painted grey. The C-40B carries around the top brass and comes with super duper expensive telephones on board. The C-model doesn't have the communication equipment on board and is therefore more adaptable in seating capacity. It is used to fly around personell and politicians. Thanks again for taking us out on your shift! Good coverage of the antennas!

I just did a handful of flights on American and saw AF1 in MIA and got to sit on the ramp for an extra hour! (777-200 and 737-800 and 737 max) I was wondering what your thoughts are on the amenities kit being reduced to cardboard and the white paint jobs vs the shiny chrome? (I didn't even get any on my flights in business/first since the flights were max 3 hours length, I look forward to the goodies in the pouch and reusing it for other stuff later)
@StigAviation
8 ай бұрын
I have no thoughts on the amenities because I’m not in charge of any of that. I am only in charge of making sure the aircraft is working properly. In regards to the paint job, even though the chrome is a very beautiful thing, but it also is a burden for maintenance. The metal is now exposed to the elements and is more susceptible to corrosion. And it also has to be continuously polished. Which takes up even more time and manpower. Having the aircraft painted provides more protection to the metal.

The tabs on the engine are not VG,so They look exactly like them just larger . I’m guessing they do same job keep air flow from wing. separating from wing Btw I love aviation ❤

Thank you for an awesome video! Not boring at all. Couple questions: - why do some engines on a320 have a visible vent "exhaust" pipe at the end, but others have a long cowling like on 15:30 and look like a hair dryer? - are you sleeping somewhere in the airport during your shifts?
@StigAviation
8 ай бұрын
Those are two different type of engines you’re talking about, the one that looks like a big hairdryer is the V2500. The one with the pipe is a CFM56-5B. just a different designs of engine. And no I do not sleep on the job.

Thank Stig! Do you check all logs into the system or pilot (CM) signalling the specific warning on check_out report? I suppose there AC current supply for the services from alternators into the motors then there are rectifiers for DC load (I thought avionics and computers). It is admirable the path and schock adsorber/insulators for electrical harnesses (same for the liquid tubing). There are specific grade for these materials because the thermal stresses are huge.

I checked the vital logs, but it’s unnecessary for me to scrutinize every single thing. If there’s something wrong with the aircraft, the aircraft will let me know.

Great Video.. Found your channel a week or so ago and absolutely love it. Quick Question.. On the 777 the front pair of wheels on the main landing gear always seems a lot dirtier than the 2 trailing pairs. Why it that? Just more brake dust? or something else?
@StigAviation
8 ай бұрын
Most of it is grease and brake dust, it also depends what type of weather and environment the aircraft is landing in.

Stig, why did that plane have 2 GS/TRK antennas on one side, and spots for TWO on the other side but there was only ONE on the right side? You could see there was a place for it but it was not there, is there supposed to be 4 or why the empty spot? Thanks in advance and thank you for the videos, you really help us learn and understand so much that we normally would not know.

First time stumbling on your channel, absolutely great content! As a mechanic student, I'm definitely going to sub and watch these videos as even though it's pretty regular stuff that I'll get to experience at one point, it's still really fun to watch. One thing I'd like to point out is the poor audio balancing. Constantly having to up the volume to hear the voice over and then lower it again when you're on the ramp gets annoying. But once again really good video! Keep it up!

19:16 wow the 787 radar is tiny. It's cute 😊 lol I bet if they made a military 787, there'd be a bigger, fancier radar. I do wish Airbus fitted stick shakers. The PlayStation controller for instance has a "fine" rumble and a "rough" shake, achieved via a motored, spinning counterweight inside each grip. I understand being a flight critical component however Airbus would pay a fortune to certify & introduce a stick shaker. And active feedback (paired sticks that move together and a stick that "pushes back" if you're about to stall etc) would help avoid AF447 tragedies in future.
@StigAviation
8 ай бұрын
It’s actually pretty big radar on the 787, I think the picture just did not do it justice. As for flight 447, there were so many other contributing factors to that incident.

Hey Stig, can you talk a little bit about how you communicate or where you get the information on where to go next, which airplane you have to look at, what airplanes arrive, pilot communication etc.? Is there a system in place or do you get everything via the radio? Thank you!
@StigAviation

Oh, that’s really easy to explain, I get assigned gates. Anything that comes into that gate is my responsibility. So, for example, if I get assigned gate 41, 43,45 then I am going to be responsible for every single aircraft that comes to those gates.

The only thing with the faulty ATS is you can do an inflight start without it, but you have to be at a certain speed and altitude for a windmill start. If it happens on takeoff you won’t be able to get bleed air to assist since the valve won’t turn and you’re too slow. Either way you’re coming back to add more work for the Stig shift.

Airlines should teach maintenance how to fly. We always hear about pilot shortages and the transition would be easy. The vast majority of a type rating is learning new systems. Then you could have pilots that do their own line maintenance. It would save the airline a fortune. I’m sure the pilots union would be fine with it 😂😂😂
@StigAviation

I don’t think the pilots union would enjoy that at all 😂

Would it be possible for you to show more about log book entries, releasing aircraft to service, and everything that goes into signing your name too the aircraft? Things like what you are responsible for when signing off airworthiness. Unsure on the airlines rules regarding showing that info but would be interesting information for sure!
