So, my dad got a Stihl 041 NOT an 041 AV probably back in the early 80's from the wife of a friend who died. It was by no means in brand new condition. It sat until one of the largest tornadoes on record hit Plainfield Illinois in 1990. It fired right up and was used for a lot of storm clean up until it kept dying. My brother rebuilt the carb and it was stored in the attic of dad's garage from 1990 until today 07-16-2024. We had a F1 tornado come through and I lost a lot of big tree branches. I pulled that chainsaw out of the attic of dad's garage and filled it with VP 50:1 fuel and it fired up on the 4th pull. I ran about 3/4 of a gallon of the VP 50:1 with no issues. My brother says I probably ruined the engine with 50:1 instead of mixing some 20:1 fuel. (I looked up fuel mixtures wrong. 041 AV calls for 50:1 while the 041 calls for 20:1) My question. With the advances in synthetic oils since the straight 30 weight used 60 years ago, should I mix (I can buy ethanol free 91 octane aviation gas) 20:1 or 50:1 fuel for this guy? I was so happy it fired up with no issues, I just wish my dad was still alive for me to share with him how it started right up after 34 years of baking and freezing in that garage attic! Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.

I must comment that when I used to live up north, I started using Trufuel in my small power equipment and outboards for winter storage because I never had any luck with Sta-bil. Never had any issues and now being down south I can get non-ethanol fuel so no need for any other. I would always run out the fuels at the end of the year and then add appropriate amounts of Trufuel and run through carb for a few minutes. I never liked the idea of running out fuel and leave system dry during off season (6 months) because of gaskets and seals possibly drying out and cracking. Never had an issue when I added new fuel and started in the spring. I actually have a pressure washer that when I moved sat almost 2 years with Trufuel and started on 2nd pull. My preference was to have some fuel in it but not pump fuel because the ethanol is a disaster. Just my opinion. Always love your videos.

Bre, does this canned fuel issue appear to be a TruFuel only problem, or do other canned fuels also have problems? I would hope TruFuel would be actively involved in tracking this problem and fixing it. Particular batches, handling by particular retailers, particular storage conditions, why is an otherwise good product causing this problem? It is widely reported in the small engine community, the problem clearly exists, so what are they doing to protect their brand?

I'm 73, and still have my Dad's Stihl 020 that he got when I was in the 6th grade. It is SO different than modern saws, in that it is low RPM, high torque, super wide chain, and a bar that is shaped like a canoe paddle! 😁 No anti-kickback paddle. In those days (1959?) there was no dedicated 2-stroke oil - I remember a label on the air filter cover reminding the operator that the mix was 25:1 of 30 wt motor oil. But it was still better than the axe it replaced!

lol, a few years back, my old boss had a saw that he said wouldn't run good and asked if we could look at it. So we took it and horribly old fuel. Changed out fuel, wiggled jets and it ran great all day. Two weeks later boss says "ya, the saw ran great for the first tank of gas then it starting running poorly again". We said take it to a shop, we don't know. Stupid guy put more of his two year old fuel in it again. Can't fix stupid!!!! Sorry.

Lately gas may contents up to 20% ethanol (corn fuel). That is the problem for small engines. Ethanol eats up those tiny little holes in the carburetors! Ethanol also creates some kind of " flakes". When an engine has been sitting for months, when I remove the carb float bol, I can se flakes in the gas especially under bright light.

Excellent point and if you properly mix to the suggested fuel to oil ration you should have no issues especially if you are using no ethanol fuel. At EP we suggest running all equipment out of full prior to storing it and also suggest our customers put in some alkylate fuel and run the unit to fill the carb. Our customers that have been doing this have had no issues over 9 years in business. Aspen highly suggested and presently trying out both Gulf Pro Fuel and Kinetics all alkylates in both 2 and 4 stroke.

Yea, I don't buy this story. If you are going to put down canned fuel, you need to check your facts. Tru Fuel is inferior quality. VP, Stihl, Red Armor by Echo is, by factory information, good for 5 years unopened, 2 years once opened. That is stated to cover them if need be. It is a manufactured fuel, to certain specs, tested for quite a few years before it hit the market. Most problems with canned fuel is caused by the owner adding canned fuel to gas that already bad and expect miracles. I've used VP and Red Armor fuel, in old and new equipment, never had one fail to start, after sitting for a year or more.

Good evening Miss C. ! While we also have a commercial outdoor power equipment dealership, and repair facility, I personally have my own three favorite "go to" antique Stihl saws, each of them are old enough to not have kickback brakes on them, and all of the above are full cast aluminum housings, and NO PLASTIC case components on them ! And no one borrows them ! They know better than to even ask ! The fuel issues we are seeing on a daily basis are straight up sorry ! I sell, ( and HIGHLY RECOMMEND ) a product called GAS-SHOK ! It's not well known, rarely available in retail stores, but straight up works ! While we don't recommend letting the treated fuel get much past a year or so old, We have customers who are telling me they have had GAS-SHOK treated fuel that has worked at roughly three years old ! That is extreme, and I don't recommend it going that long ! But I have had a couple of snow throwers start up and run just fine with extremely old, but treated fuel ! We are seeing our pump-gas, starting to be bad at the 90 day point ! That's just criminal at $5.00 a gallon ! Great video Miss C. ! Can't agree with you more ! Nothing happened! I use Avgas for all my Stihl equipment. I then add octane to boost from 100 to 108. I buy 20 to 30 gallons at a time. I have never had any issues. MS460s, MS 180s and lots of trimmers and blowers. Seems to be working fine for me and my equipment seems to be happy. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Long story - short, mine is 041 farm boss with points. I got it wet in an emergency cutting through the ice last winter. It didn't have any spark after that. I've checked the kill switch for continuity....Seems ok. Pulled the flywheel, cleaned and re-set the points, re-assembled with a new Bosch sparkplug. I checked for spark with the plug removed and grounded. It had spark for two pulls and then nothing....What next?

Very good video about bad fuel. Approximately 20% of our service at Eliminator Performance is from bad fuel with likely 90% being attributed to ethanol breakdown from customers using 10% ethanol fuel and not running their engines out of fuel and not opening the bottom bowl nut to expel the balance of the fuel in the carb. As far as canned fuels go we have had zero issues with the Aspen alkylate fuels either two or four stroke. Actually have a two stroke snowblower that has not been used for 2.5 years and it fired right up first pull 3 primes and on choke the other day. Kind of surprised since once opened they say it it good for 2 years and 5 years unopened. One thing we have noticed is there are no stale dates or best before dates on any of the canned fuels. Presently we are experimenting with Gulf Pro Fuels alkylate fuel and Kinetics alkylate fuel in both two and four stroke (so far no issues).

Hey Chickanic, I got a a Husqvarna 266SE chain saw. Put on a big bore kit on it. New carb and all. Runs great but real hard to start. What have I done wrong.. Love your channel. From Sask. , Canada.

How to tell how old Stihl pre-mixed fuel is. 1st 2 numbers is the year. Next 3 numbers is day of year (1-365). Next 2 is time of day.

It's even a quickstop. That's pretty rare on the 041. Looks like the old chain brake with disconnection clutch. That saw would fit well in my collection. ;) These oldies are awesome saws. Super robust and run on torque not on big horse power as the 041 is a long stroker.. Just today morning I finished an overall rebuild of one. What do you mean with canned fuel? Is it the ready made fuel from stihl, Aspen etc? Best wishes from Germany

I run VP 40/50:1 93 octane pre mixed fuels in all my 2-strokes and have never had an issue. I have had issues with carbs trying to mix my own even with ethanol free gas. Just my experience

I had some VP 50:1 fuel go bad after a couple of months. Took a bit to figure it out. When I dumped the fuel, and refilled with fresh mix pump gas, it fired right up. I work for a fuel distributor in Colorado. We have a small tank of Av gas at the bulk plant, they sell fuel out of. I run Av Gas now in my small equipment. Funny thing is, I can get it for less than $4 a gallon, with my employee discount. So it’s cheaper than regular pump gas. In a semi transparent gas can, like the dirt bikers use, it’s blue like washer fluid. I never knew that lol

Hello Bre, I have a vintage 1984 Homelite XL Auto Oiling saw that I am currently rebuilding. It originally called for a 16:1 gas to oil mixture. With more modern oils today, synthetic, blend or non synthetic, what do you believe is the best oil and best gas to oil mixture to run in this type saw?

Interesting about the canned fuel. I was going to buy a few cans to have on hand while travelling with my Poulan chainsaw. (it's in a plastic case, love the case for holding in oil leaks). Figured a few cans of canned fuel would be a good method for having fuel when needed. Now I'm not so sure! That canned fuel sure is expensive, and if it's suspect, then it's even worse! What's your company name in Arkansas? A friend has a home outside Jasper, I was telling him where to go if he needs work. You sure know what you're doing!!

The problem with regular canned fuel like Trufuel is that it is not dated, and like is said here, can be years old and simply no good. Alkylate fuel like from Stihl and Aspen is much much better, it lasts for years, and best of all, it has a date of manufacture printed on every container. I just bought a 5 litre Aspen 2 fuel and it clearly says the date of manufacture, April 3rd, 2022. It has a shelf life of up to five years in the original unopened container, and once you open it, it still has a shelf life of at least 2 years. All my 2 cycle equipment starts within 3 pulls, even though I don’t use most of it over the winter time, so like 5-6 months… Use alkylate fuel for storage, otherwise if you use your equipment frequently use ethanol free gas like chickanic says, 😃

Alkalyne feul is "in theory" good for 10 or more years, but they stick 5y on it as a waranty to be safe. Had a saw sitting idle for 3 years full of fuel. Started on choke in 3 pulls fried up on the second.

I’ve had the same results. I always run my tanks dry for the winter but use alkylate fuel to run them dry. Absolutely no problem starting in the new season. Actually nowadays I buy the Aspen 4 cycle fuel and mix it with Red Armor oil for my 2 cycle saws and garden tools. I use the 4 cycle to winterize my outboard, lawnmover, pressure washer etc. It’s the best of both worlds. The Aspen fuel is more or less identical to the Stihl and Husqvarna alkylate fuels, but it is a lot cheaper, comes in 5 or 1 litre containers, and also comes in 4 cycle, not just 2 cycle, so it’s more useful overall.

@@larrysantana9694 that’s interesting that you say that….I’ve never found it yet. Also, Trufuel is NOT alkylate fuel…just premium ethanol free gas, so in no way comparable to the Aspen, Stihl or Husqvarna fuels.

Hahaha! That poor old girl likely needs a break down and deep clean as well (the chainsaw). I can't even imagine the sheer pounds of oil soaked wood dust I have cleaned out of saws, or replaced the spark plug with the correct one!

I bought one of these saws brand new. But eventually the SEM Sweden electronic ignition would fail. I had 3 other parts saws that I kept robbing it ignition systems from. And one by one the electronics would fail. Since they are discontinued, I finally had to stop using this saw. Has anyone ever found a way around this unless you go back to the point and condenser systems from the very early models,,,,,,,,,,,,

Well I have been using can fuel in my saws since I got them because I figured it was better for saw. I can get 92 OCT non alcohol at the pump for about $15 a gal cheaper!! Saved me some money!! Thanks

I have an old Stihl 038 AVS. When started it runs great and is a beast. But if it sits for a couple of weeks, I have to take the air filter off to get it started. I'm wondering if this rings a bell with you. Hard to diagnose from afar, I know. I thought I'd run it by you. Thanks for all of the helpful videos!

Same guy had a riding mower that would not start. He had the engine completely rebuilt. Still would not start. He replace coil, points, everything. Starter and battery too. Would not ask. So finally he was at wits end when I said Ill stop and take a look. 5 minutes into it, No spark. checked wire, spark. I asked "Got a spark plug?" True and it ran.
