I am a small engine mechanic for many years. Wow I watched a few of your videos and a cannot believe how calm and well spoken you are. You remind me of my elementary school teachers back in the 80's. I really appreciate you taking the time to make these very well made and educational videos. I have not found one error on the way you work or tips you give to your viewer. Fantastic job! If there is one thing I can suggest to better your videos: You should do something about your mic because when you unscrew bar nuts and the saw bounces on your wood workbench or when you turn the saw around, you sometimes hit your mic and it sounds like an explosion in the audio. You should get a mic boom so you don't have to wear it all the time and put a mat on your table. ps: Always try to start the saw and replicate the problem if you can before you even do anything to it or the fuel. The carbon buildup could be due to using a low quality 2T oil or a 2T oil the wrong flashpoint temp. Does he own a boat? Ask him if he's using marine 2T oil in it. LoOl.

Carbon, oil residue below a good set of rings can come from a to rich mix. With the air filter as clogged as that one is it was starving for air and that made even a proper mix to rich. The engine running this rich will not get up to temp that would normally vaporize the oil in the crankcase and consume it. So it coats everything and it never tends to relieve it cause it can’t, it’s not hot enough! Short run times also does this especially in winter!
@benlofgren180
5 ай бұрын
It will also coat the muffler and spark arrester. sometimes clogging it up so badly that the engine will idle but won't run at higher RPMs. In this case remove the spark arrester and with a torch flame burn off the carbon build up on the screen until you can see through it. Older two stroke mopeds used to clog up the muffler and run poorly. by taking an acetylene torch and starting the build up on fire you could then turn off the acetylene and leave the oxygen on to slowly burn out the carbon build up. usually the outside of the muffler would glow red where it was burning, so, if it was too red it would burn a hole through on you. Adjusting the oxygen for a good slow burn usually worked the fire through the whole exhaust.

Hi ! I picked up my grandfather's Stihl MS231C, completely out of order (it had been twice to a bad repairer, who hadn't managed to get it going again). Then I dropped it off at another, who after taking it apart simply said it was too expensive and too much labor. I remember looking at the piston before dropping it off, and I was amazed that Stihl makes black pistons! In reality it was also oil deposits, which stuck and slowed down the piston stroke when starting (add to that the effortless C-start system with the big spring, hard to get a good feel for the thing). I kept the saw dismantled for quite a while, and the motivation to rebuild it came. When I took it apart, the repairman told me that the segments had broken, I replaced them with cheap Chinese ones, at least for the test, I thought, I also put back two crankshaft spy seals (quality suitable for stihl 025 theoretically) And I couldn't get it to work, it drove me a bit crazy, I changed the carburetor diaphragms twice, but nothing happened. The very poor quality oil used by my grandfather, mixed with no maintenance (he never blew out the air filter in 7 years), blocked the rings, stained the piston with this kind of glue, partially blocked the carburetor (making it unusable). So I replaced the carburetor with a second-hand one, along with the fuel hose and fuel strainer. And the chainsaw works again! It's amazing how sturdy it is, but it will break down very quickly, if you do anything with it. I think the MS291 you're showing would have ended up in the same condition if you hadn't overhauled it, because of its bad oil and lack of maintenance. I'll have to publish my video on this 231c. Sorry for my English, I'm watching you from France, thanks for your videos.

The one thing a lot of people dont talk about when it comes to diagnosing diaphragm type carburetors are the importance of its internal check valves ,a fresh properly instaled rebuild kit will not fix a Carb with a bad check valve , there is usuly one in the main emulsion tube , and one in the idle circut. these tiny check valves are also why one has to be careful with what carb cleaning chemicals are used in the cleaning process, as some of them will turn the tiny flapper inside the check valve into a glob of goo ruining it ,, check valves can fail closed and not pass fuel either direction, (most common) or fail and allow it to flow both directions when it should not , either failure will cause runabilty issues due to this hidden fault .. can you refect on that in the future ? many shops wont service a carb with a bad check valve due to labor required to press it out and change it , and some carbs do not have servicable check valves anyway, its just something to bring awareness too. .

Now we all ‘Know’ why it costs so much to buy and repair Stihl chainsaws! 😃 Having said that, I wouldn’t mind having this very competent Tech work on any of my saws! She is very thorough and knowledgeable. Very good repair. 👍👏 And I applaud You for not ‘drop starting’ the saw! I suspect that the owner of the saw is one of these ‘zealots’ that advocate running ridiculous 20:1 or 32:1 mixes? 🙄 I would probably run some Seafoam, or MM oil in it a few times, take care of some of that gunk on the piston? Some have claimed Stihl Ultra Oil can lead to this problem, I don't know? Side note: I have always mixed my gas to around 45:1 and recently took off the muffler on my nearly 19 year old Husky 345, and the piston looked like it just came out of the factory. I always use High Octane E free gas, when possible. My recent purchase was a Stihl 180, and I use the Stihl Oil the dealer sold me, (warranty extension ) and it is a smoker? I think I will switch it out now that it is broken in, and go back to using my regular mix. Lot of good comments in here. Great Video and repair! Keep up the good work, and stay safe, and take care of that big beautiful ring! I cringed a bit when you were turning the flywheel with that hand! 🙄 😊

Awsome video, I am a novice at best when working on saws, so this is great info for me. I love the details. I have a theory in your piston color. I currently have a 500i, a 291, and an m18. (M18 is awsome for limbing) previously had a 290 and a 440 magnum. I have a respectful ammount of time on a saw. I live and cut at 7,500' -11,200' my 500i was struggling to run, i bought a bark box and max flow intake to help with breathing but the issue got worse. I always ran moto mix fuel. I reached out to gordy with west coast saws to ask him why these add ons didnt help, he explained something i had never considered. He said that the octane in moto mix is too high for my elevation and this is why the saw was running poorly. Im thinking its stihl fuel in a stihl saw. So feeling like i just got fed a line, I mixed up a gallon of regular 87 with stihl oil and filmed it in a video, you can hear when the saw ran out of the motomix or the computer recalibrated and hit the new fuel. Wow, what a difference. I have never run motomix since threw 3 unopened gallons in the trash. Could be a similiar issue maybe not elevation but similiar with octane causing the cylinder issues. I had mine to stihl 4x and each time they said it runs fine. They dumped my fuel upon inspection and put shop fuel in it and the issue was gone, i get it home fill it up with motomix same problem repeated itself. Thought it might help ya if you didnt know it already or if in the future your chasing an unknown issue. Great content

You can put rope into the spark plug hole if you don’t have the tool to stop the piston. When setting the coil, you can put a business card between the flywheel magnet and the coil if you don’t have a tool, and the magnet will hold it at the right position for tightening. I worked at a tool rental store and we had about 7 Stihl saws. They were great runners, but all of them were hard to start cold.

Absolutely love your Chanel have enjoyed every video I've watched. Really like diagnostic vids. The condition of the piston is what I've heard referred to as kokeing. Heard a few thing can cause it, low compression you rule that out. Low quality oil but oils are better now the ever. In my opinion it's old gas nobody wants to throw gas out I put it in my truck put fresh gas in the 2 strokes. All gas goes bad for 2 stokes after a while even if they put stabilizers in the oil or you add your own. even non ethanol I wouldn't trust after 45 days 30 for 87 11%ethanol pump gas and thats pushin it. 2 stroke are simple but.. finicky...when you were doing the carb tare down you said it smelled funny. That saw had a bunch of stikes against it that air filter was not good at all. Dull chain and no bar oil yet plenty oil in the cylinder and the exhaust port wasn't just carbon it looked gooy. 2 strokes need!!! Good gas and mix oil a clean filter and a shrap chain and bar oil anything less then that is unnecessary wear to your 2 stroke. Thanks again for your videos

G'day MwSE, I had to watch because I've got a 291 I sent it to MrHangerone on you tube and he ported it for me it's output has increased noticeably.I Was having issues with fine wood dust getting past the filter on my MS660 so I took it to my Stihl dealer and I said to the mechanic with 40 years behind him that I went to tech school with what's going on ? he said your chain mustn't be sharp so he slid the bar cover back took one look and said well it must be something else. Because we cut the hardest wood on Earth it creates fine particle like cutting concrete so his fix was a smear of grease around the seat of the filter and crank the filter cover up hard, that worked 👍.

I bought a 24 inch Husky last December and it would not start right out of the box. Tractor Supply has no service, the only authorized servicer for my area took my number after telling me "4 to 6 weeks" backlogged and never called back. Still have new saw will not run. Incensed beyond description. The Echo I bought years ago was OK until needing carb adjust won't run now (I in Hellafornia where the CARB is trying to get rid of ALL engines). I needed a big saw and still have ton of a downed tree in the backyard.

Great diagnostic work. I was wondering if you have ever seen an MS 271/291/311 where the transfer cover/s come loose and the saw won’t run. These transfer port covers on these saws are bonded or glued onto the cylinder. There are NO fasteners at all holding them on. I worked on one for a coworker and couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t pumping fuel to the carb for the longest time. I finally figured out that it was not getting a pulse. I just happened to be moving the saw around and heard a rattling noise. Upon further investigation I found that the transfer cover was just flopping around on the clutch side causing a huge air leak. This is a well documented problem online I later found out.
