Great info Jack. I'm loving my 461. Noticeable improvement with the Insan-o SS over the standard Insan-o. You do great work, I would recommend your port work to anyone. Thanks again.

Your wealth of knowledge and info on saws is something amazing Mr Jack, it's way over my head sometimes what your explaining but you tell it so knuckleheads like me get the idea of what you're meaning. Was this end of saw work for you a necessity or want or both Jack? Again having both sides of the craft is a gift from my eyes because each one makes the next that much better after you feel it for it's intended purpose and you know pretty well where your changes need made.............very cool to say the least, safe cuttin pard

I was under the impression that the rough intake manifold surface created turbulence on the surface which creates a “lubrication effect” for the air flow in the centre of the turbulence . Just a thought thanks for the bench talk.

Love it. You pointed out that the cylinder bore is conical in shape. I was dumbfounded by that. I'd imagine that's why the piston skirt shows wear in each encounter. If the piston is "loose" at BDC and "tight" at TDC you would expect that to show up in some fashion. What is the reason for the conical bore? I'd imagine it has something to do with what is happening with the components at BDC...? Something at BDC needs more elbow room to complete the stroke but I'm not sure why.

dirtyshirtinfo hi. A manufacturing miss que. The bore should be parallel to itself, anywhere, to to bottom and also square to the base for the length of the stroke. The tolerance in the newer smog saws is sloppy to say the least. The piston is allowed to get a bit more "cockeyed" in the bore as it moves through the travel path. That is what is causing the intense and quick wear on the bottom, back piston skirt. At least from my perspective. Thanks for watching.

Thank you Jack - you were talking at 1gig and I was hearing at 256meg. I thought that taper was intentional, I was like WHAT!! Still, the piston seems to show the consequences of this variation in a troubling way. Love the bench talk.

the ridges in the intake increases velocity to improve volumetric efficiency. like dimples on a golf ball.
@hotsaws101
6 жыл бұрын
Fred hi. The ridges cause turbulence in the intake manifold just aft of the carburetor. This is done to help/cause the fuel to atomize so that it is in more of a vapor form. This is coming from the Stihl people that I have talked to. I have never seen the intake manifold "unsmoothed" to increase flow efficiency. It seems to me the venturi is where the velocity is being increased, also trying to get the fuel into suspension. Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 that is true. I personally touched up the ports on my honda cr250 dirtbike and i was going to polish the intake like glass as i did to the exhaust port but thankfully did some research before finishing it up. You dont want the intake ports smooth like glass because the fuel will run in. A good example of what im getting at is when you freshly wax your vehicle youll notice how the water beads down and off and not equally displaced on vehicle paint. This happens in intake port with fuel if the walls are too smooth and will cause inconsistant fuel intake. Just a nice passage with cast marks gone is good enough for intake, maybe inlarged abit, but never smoothed off. Bike ended up gaining more rpm and topend from port job.

BHD hi. They are to reduce intake noise and filter wetting from the blowback that happens until the intake port closes fully. If you can live with the those two, then its not what i would call a performance enhancer. Thanks for watching.

@@hotsaws101 So is it fair to say your porting does not reduce the saw's longevity? Thanks Jack.
@hotsaws101
6 жыл бұрын
Bob Frazier hi. That depends. Longevity, to a large degree from my perspective anyway, is operator related. Specifically, the maintenance habits, the mix oil choice, condition of the chain/s, and proper jetting for the locale and especially the chains. A little bit of my experience with psycho level saws is a follows: 6.5 to 7 million board feet cut over a 7 year time span with one of my 390s - all original, down to the plastics. Over a five year period (5+ million), I wore out four 372 bottom ends with a big bore topend I made myself back in '01. Both were what I would call the standard psycho zipkit of today. Heavily modified, reshaped combustion chambers, etc., etc. Some would suggest that a modded saw has longevity issues. I don't necessarily agree that a zipped saw/s doesn't last as long barring some weird mechanical failure. They won't have anywhere near the amount of run per the same amount of volume cut as a stocker. All that being said, many drag strip type cars never make it off the line. Modifying mechanical things sometimes = failures. Thanks for watching.
