Black Locust is some hard stuff. Chips from it are pretty fine and yes, when it is dry it's like cutting rocks. I build bows from it and Osage Orange, and worn out many a chain on that stuff. Nice work, love the results.

John, what do you charge to port a 500i?
@johnscustomsaws
2 жыл бұрын
Im not taking on any new work right now but I charge $500... domed/machined piston and ported/machined cylinder... plus parts obviously... this particular build however would be more... quite but more actually 😬... there is soooooo much more to it than people realize... its almost not realistic to do this build for the time it takes and what I feel comfortable charging...
@TrolloTV

@@johnscustomsaws 500 bucks is a good price for quality work. Don’t be afraid to be asking good money for the work you do 👍🏻 Have you looked into having a CNC shop do some of the machining for you? Not exactly easy/possible for cylinders probably, but depending on what’s done to it it may work on pistons quite well. Also, out of personal interest: What would you charge for a ported 261?
@johnscustomsaws
2 жыл бұрын
@@TrolloTVhonestly the direction I am heading the CNC might be a good option and I am getting a 2 piece head from a guy with a CNC but I don't know if it would be possible or economical to get the entire cylinders done... would need to be sending top ends off all the time or have rotating stock... truthfully I want to get back into the real custom saws... nitrous/turbo/boosted/flame shootin/supercharged/jet-saw... stuff like that
@TrolloTV
2 жыл бұрын
@@johnscustomsaws The main thing in terms of cost would be designing the cad models, doing the CNC programming, and figuring out how to machine and hold the cylinders. So there are setup costs involved, but the actual machining of aluminum is pretty fast and cheap. So you might be able to have a CNC shop do most of the standard porting work for the more popular saws, and then also have more spare time for crazy projects and novelty saws

Sorry, but your chain is not sharp - a handfiled chain with a 500i cuts way way faster.
