Imagine this: It’s 1914 you’re sitting in the trenches, it’s christmas and the war should have ended by now, you think this is going to be another hard day of fighting, but then you hear this ringing out from the german line, you decide to do the only possible thing you can do and sing the english version, this results in a sing off, a truce, a football game and just a good day. That is what happened Christmas 1914, remember kids the world doesn’t always suck especially on christmas

An hour more or less before the Mass our choir will have their performance and one of their repertoire is Silent Night both in German and English. I am just excited because I suggested the German version. I am not German but been to Germany on vacation and love the original version. In 1968 I spent the first Christmas away from home in the U.S. Army stationed at that time in Germany. On Christmas Eve, a day off, my friends and I headed for the small town of Marbourg where a nurses college was located. After finding everything closing down we headed back to the train station when we were contacted by some local people who asked if we wanted to come to a party for those who were away from their family for Christmas. We thought this was going to be a wild affair however it turned out to be a party at a local church. We were given presents , drink and food. Then we started to sing Christmas Carols in German. My fondest remembrance however was singing Silent Night in German, a song I treasure to this day and in German.

@Ickerbocker
Quark.

I knew it then, even at 9 years old, the vernacular was what made it so very special...and listening to this, 20 years later, I now know exactly why. Die Thomanerchor really knows how to bring this carol back [close to] home in spirit, as well as with words and tone. Thank you for sharing.

I cannot wait either my friend. When was this recorded? Excellent singing, very well disciplined. I have recently been going through a difficult time. I searched through youtube videos for few hours looking for solace, I stopped when I found this one and listened in wonder. This is beautiful....so peaceful, so graceful. I am not Christian, nor do I understand German but this brings peace to my heart.

I'm new to this site and noticed some comments. Gruber actually didn't compose this with the intention of the melody (at least in THIS arrangement) and so many other familiar ones, for the Schlaf in himmlischer Ruh for example, to go up a "full 3rd to a 5th"....legend has it, that he was a church organist who composed this simple tune. On Christmas Eve, or just before, the organ didn't function. Broke. Kaput. He actually wrote this to be sung as a simple tune, accompanied by guitar. If anyone has ever heard the KING'S SINGERS recording of this...it is far more accurate in terms of the melodic line.

You don't need to be German to sing this. Just listen and practice. Use a translator with speech to assist you. I linked the lyrics in a comment over a year ago.
