Stimulant drugs include cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamine, some prescription diet pills, and many prescription medications for ADHD.
Stimulants can be taken orally, snorted, chewed, injected, or smoked. Generally speaking, the faster a drug gets in and out of your system, the more addictive potential it has.
Addiction to stimulants brings with it a unique set of problems. Stimulant abuse can cause psychosis and paranoia. I have also found that it seems to take longer for individuals to past the Post Acute Withdrawal symptoms (PAWS), which can include depression, lack of energy and motivation, difficulty concentrating, weight gain, etc...
I also find that individuals can develop extreme tolerance to stimulants. We've had patients who are taking extreme doses of stimulants when they come in for treatment. Stimulant abuse creates a type of hyper-focus that fees productive to the individual but usually isn't.
