The song is sbout the man who appeared in the video, Quintin Crisp, a humourist, writer and openly gay man at a time when that was dangerous. "It takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile Be yourself no matter what they say".

The song is about the older white haired person with the hat. I don’t want to offend, or mislabel him, but if you look at “”his” appearance, you may conclude that things aren’t quite what they seem. Apparently, he came to NY from England many years ago when times were a little less tolerant than they are now. Apparently, this person has been written about, so Sting already knew of him, and decided to write the song about him. I agree……..the music is fantastic, love this song

One of the most prolific songwriters in the last 50 years. As a lyricist, he's at the top of the list.

He's actually talking about Quentin Crisp, the older gentleman in the video, who was an out gay man, friend on his, who moved to NY and had to face criticism. "Takes a man to suffer ignorance and smile, be yourself no matter what they say" Beautiful song, gorgeous meaning. The incredible guy on the soprano saxophone is Brandon Marsalis. Not sure about the rest of the jazz band but they were all great!

Another fine song & artist choice ! It was really cool how Sting emerged in the 80’s with new styles after The Police broke up. Recruiting Branford Marsalis on sax was brilliant ! Another suggestion : “ Fortress Around Your Heart”.

Nothing Like the Sun! Excellent CD. Every track is great including Sting's version of Little Wing (Hendrix classic) with the late Hiram Bullock on lead guitar. Smokes!

You'd love "Shape Of My Heart," 'Fragile," "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," "Desert Rose.' - Sting started using Jazz Musicians on many solo albums; on this track, he was joined by Branford Marsalis played soprano saxophone, while the drums were played by Manu Katché and the percussion by Mino Cinélu. His lyrics are great and the unique jazz mix give his work a fresh new vibe from The Police.

I strongly suggest getting into Sting. After the Police broke up he had a prolific career writing and performing with assorted brilliant musicians. More than a dozen original albums, as well as compilation and live albums. He is still performing (in his early 70s now!). I recommend the first few albums of his (including The Dream of the Blue Turtles, Soul Cages, Ten Summoners Tales, as well as his concert-documentary film Bring On The Night -- on youtube.

Sting assembled an incredible group of jazz musicians for his band, headlined by Wynton Marsalis on tenor sax and trumpet.

A good song to reat to at the moment by Sting: "Russians". The same album(Nothing like the sun) also has the song "They dance alone" wich has both Eric Clapton and Mark Knopfler on guitar. That song also has Branford Marsalis on saxophone like "Englishman iun New York"

@@ekstradycja According to wiki, Manu Katché played drums on this song, and Mino Cinelu played percussion...I think in the video the only percussionist shown is Mino Cinelu? I think Omar Hakim played a lot with Sting earlier, before this song came out. I might be wrong though!

This is about his friend Quintin Crisp, moved to the states after being beaten up (queer bashed) in London. He never denied his true self he would walk away from fights but never ran from the beatings (an English man will walk but never run). Takes more than combat gear to make a man, takes more than a licence for a gun.(even though he was gay Quintin was more of a man than those that attack others. dig deeper into the lyrics research is available.
