Nice, going through your library now, some good stuff! I'm going nettle hunting tomorrow. I saw my spot ready but didn't have my gloves. The roots are good for prostate and mature seeds later in the season do something good for you because half teaspoon in the morning and you'll be energized all day. Peace!

Nice vid. I've been eating nettles as greens for quite a few years now. As you said, they're best eaten young or before they flower. Apparently, This is because after this stage they have built up a lot of silica, which doesn't do the kidneys much good, the silica leaves fine abrasions in the kidneys. I've not yet made tea with nettles though. I've made tea from fresh but not dried, and your vid has helped me to prepare some dried nettles for winter months, so that I still have nettle tea. so thank you very much Rick. Great vid. Regards Shane.

saxons used to grow nettles for food, whole fields of them. they are one of the herbs i'd reccommend during pregnancy for their iron and vitamin c. i would suggest that they should be dried in the dark, mushroom bags from the supermarket work well, as sunlight will degrade them. great vid as ever. :-)))

Thank you for the video! I just dug out a bunch of stinging nettle out of my mothers flower bed and I know the benefits to it, so I didn't want to just throw it away ^.^ I have a larger bed of it in the very back corner of my hard and behind our shed so I plan on using it if it's going to be tenacious and grow here. Thanks again! Very informative! ^.^

@thatisalliam Glad you liked the vid :o) I hear that nettles picked late are tougher and not as good to eat. Tea might have a more 'seasoned' taste but I believe will still be ok. I'd love to know how you get on.

I just want to add that when making any type of tea, it is important to cover it after adding water to the herbs. Obviously this is already taken care of if made in a teapot but in case you make another way . . . Some (not all) herbs have volatile oils which will evaporate in the steam, so instead of worrying about which do or don't, it's good practice to cover as standard . You will trap everything in the tea if you cover which is exactly what you want to do for full benefits.

Rick, are you familiar with mamaki? it is a nettle endemic to Hawaii. Its used a a traditional Polynesian cure and as a nice herbal tea. Plus, because it evolved in t he islands, it does not have thorns or any stinging sap like some nettles, so not only you can pick it without getting stung, you can also eat it raw. You can buy it at certain specialty nurseries online. Plus, it can be grown in a temperate climate.

I brought back nettles from a forest (roots and all). I grow them in a odd 5ft. by 34in. Plot. It looks like I’m growing weeds. I clip off leaves and put them in a paper bag. I’ll give the bag a good shake 1 or 2 times a day for a week or 2. They come out nice and dry. Since I cut the leaves off the stem in advance I don’t need to crush them.

I've used the stinging nettles by smacking them on my skin to try to stimulate the immune system. I don't know if it did any good. :) But my wife sure thought I was crazy. I will try making tea out of them. I've been making tea out of the goldenrod plant. I like it a lot, and the people I have given some to have been coming back for more. It grows wild here in south Texas USA. One gal said it cured her of some stomach ailment, I don't know but I would like to think so.

Hi Rick, thank you for this video! It has given me some great info that I was looking for. I'm based in the UK and am lucky enough to have half my garden (in the countryside) covered in nettles and made a load of fresh nettle tea last year but am looking to dry a load this year to last me through the winter so this video has really helped, thank you. My only question is, is it safe to use the larger leaves? I always thought it was just the top 4 leaves that you use, or is that just for making the fresh tea? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again Rick!

+MrsCRYSTAL Wish cooking or boiling the nettles stops them from stinging so when you make the tea, the nettles get boiled. It's normal for Dogs to eat nettles straight from the ground so dried nettles and nettle tea are fine for them.

Yeah, I've done fresh before. Just bring some water in a pan to a boil, Put in about about a handful per mug and just let it boil for 15 minutes. Pour through a strainer and serve. At this point the Nettle has been cooked and can be eaten if you want too. It's a bit like Spinach. Drying is good if you want to keep a bunch for over the winter as it'll easily last a year in that state in a jar. In terms of taste there isn't really much difference between dried and fresh.

I could call you wimpy for using glove but I’m aware that different types of nettles grow in different locations. In my area in Pennsylvania The nettles have a sting like a mosquito bite rather than a bee sting and if you don’t scratch it the itching goes away in a couple of hours. I understand that Florida has the nettle with the worst sting. But maybe that’s just so far as America.
@TSorovanMHael

I've found that nettles are superior to spinach, after cooking of course. I've made nettle quiche with a bit of sausage and it's fantastic. The way I figure is that nettles have evolved such an effective defense they don't need to load themselves up with bitter, nasty-tasting compounds to avoid being eaten.

That is not quite right. The best option you have is to wait till the nettles come to bloom and they bloom very profusely. Now, you pick up bunches of the nettles flowers with tongs, maintaining your safe distance. The soup you make out of the nettles flowers tastes not only heavenly, it is loaded with vitamins. Wait until Fall and let me know.

Don't pick Stinging Nettles when in Flower The flowers on Stinging Nettles are like catkins; little tendrils of flowers dropping down from the stems, they tend to be green or yellowy-green in colour, so not always obvious to spot. This signifies a change in this nutritious plant, a change that is of benefit to butterflies and moths, though not to humans. At this stage it is best to quote John Wright (from his Hedgerow book) as he says it so well and thoroughly; 'At the first sign of flowers you must stop picking. The plant will now start producing cystoliths - microscopic rods of calium carbonate - which can be absorbed by the body where they will mechanically interfere with kidney function.' Not in May to October in Northern Hemisphere
