I have the upmost respect for Curtis Youngblood and what he's doing with his collective pitch quad copter. Some people like my self actually prefer to fly acrobatic quad copters and are bored with the normal fixed pitch quad setup. If you think quad copters is only for FPV then you have only put that limit there on yourself.

It is the first to have full collective pitch AND sustained 3d flight,not just the first commercially manufactured, first in the world.

can i do this with my lumenier qav 250 too ? or do i need special motors or stuff ? by the way - YOU GOT THE SKILLZ MAN ! :D

Right now RC helicopters are the most acrobatically capable flying machines on the planet. I've long wondered about the 3d potential of servo controlled tail-rotors applied to quadfliers... and here is the first potential challenger for 3d helis. But two open questions... how positive is yaw control without a dedicated vertical rotor? And if you think it's hard to keep orientation with a heli... whoa man, just try it with this! Great innovation & well flown... Cheers!

Great video! How much more difficult is it too fly than a regular quad? I too vote for some close up pics!

So this is real and flies great. A bit Pricy… This is not the first variable pitch quad… they have been around for about 3 years… It is the most stable and best 3D I have seen though… I am busy with one myself which when done will post the plans to build for free :) But again this is a great quad!!!

Please show us a link or any info to a variable pitch quad that actually flies, this is a first as far as my search goes. Thanks in advance.

Hi, just google variable pitch quadcopter. There are a lot, most early ones used variable pitch motors, but they are moving to servos. The concept is the same. I didn't mean that they are available commercially, I am sorry if that is what you thought I meant. The software for most open source boards is available if you want to build your own. I have flown them and it's not for me. I prefer helicopters for 3D. I prefer FPV and high quality stabilised video with my multi rotors.

I hear ya! When I Turned my 400 into a Taco it was a repair cost I could not justify. No way I'll be able to afford repairs of this bad boy. We'll just need to wait for the market to adopt affordable variable pitch quad technology on its own.

@Multimadmanable: I don't believe you are thinking this out... This is a huge step forward for the market. With 3D Quad frames the FPV industry will achieve faster speeds and predictable high speed descents in any wind condition. When APM and NAZA catch up we'll be able to adjust rpm and pitch to achieve maximum efficiency for the type of flying were doing at the moment.

Slightly different, have to control 4 rotors, two of which are counter-rotating. It is an updated version of the Total G, Curtis' original flight control.

Just cant see how it is as efficient as a 3d helicopter. There was one at our field and It may be easier to fly and a new way of doing things but i see the RC helicopters doing it faster, better, cheaper with one disadvantage - harder to fly - but that makes them more fun! HOWEVER! I dont know why the development of this variable pitch quad copter is not aimed more at providing a very stable base for photography! I mean being variable pitch, it should be more stable in high wind scenarios! I think this is where the effort should be focused because i can never see it ever coming close to outperforming a 3d Helicopter, but i can see it being the next logical step in having awesome photography in many types of weather conditions.

Curtis youngblood is a god, but the ultimate aim of quads are full computer control/multi aircraft formation. Still, these "should" be able to do anything a CP heli can do. However, I have yet to see full continuous piro control. No more "colored" blades in front. I'm sure Curtis has already figured that out.

how the heck rudder is working? all propellers working on one motor...
@ByronBrummer

Good question... Is there a differential and breaks maybe?
@Stompist

Rudder is controlled by prop speed variations (4 separately controlled motors). The variable pitch refers to the blades on each prop. They are able to change their angle. This allows for "more" or "less" air to be pushed by the prop. Airplanes use this also.
@ByronBrummer
9 жыл бұрын
Except on this quad there is only one moter and all props are locked to the same rotation. I learned later what they are doing for yaw is a complex mix of prop pitches. I'm still not clear how that induces yaw..
@Stompist
9 жыл бұрын
If there is only one motor then the entire quad is controlled solely from the variable pitch blades on the props. The pitch of each prop is controlled independently instead of the 4 motors running independantly. Sounds like a complicated setup to me.

It is. More or less 4 helicopter tail systems put together. But it also flys unlike any normal quad.

You don't know what you are talking about. That is Curtis Youngblood flying and you will never in your dreams be able to ever fly as well as a world champion. No one cares, well over a hundred pilots signed up to test fly the Stingray at Ircha last week. I flew it myself and loved it. I don't speak for anyone but myself and would be bored flying a quad. A 3D quad is the first I would consider. Do a search for Curtis Youngblood!
