The difference between your truck and all those “better” off roaders is that you got into that thing in Florida and drove it across the country at 85mph in complete comfort and then did all those trails and drove it home getting 20mpg with the AC on listening to the stereo and talking on your cell phone. They are amazing vehicles.

Thank you for this video. We just bought a '23 SR5 4WD because we needed the third row (no TRD 3 rows). I have got some flack on-line (from Facebook groups) about not having a "off road model", but this weekend I had a chance to use the 4Runner for exactly what we wanted...rough/washed-out roads. Was exploring the Talladega National Forest in Alabama and was on a steep road that had not been maintained with lots of erosion/ruts. Used 4-Lo to crawl up the hill and it did great. Was not Moab or Telluride, but the SR5 on stock Dunlop tires allowed our family to go explore an area that we could not have accessed if we had a crossover, so I am happy with the SR5.

Hi Tim. I came across one of you videos about taking SS at 62. My husband and I will be 65 next year. I retired last year and started SS shortly thereafter. Hubby wants to work til next June and I can't wait until he does. He drives a 2019 Barcelona Red Tacoma and I'm in my 2nd 4runner. I let him trade my 2005 4runner in on his Taco and I drove his 2017 Honda Accord Sport for a couple years. I missed my 4runner so much that we decided it was time for another one. It's a stock 2021 TRD Offroad. We live in Georgia and took the TRD OR on a 2 week canyon hopping trip in 2021. I must say Shafer Trail was my favorite part. We have been riding bicycles (mountain, road and gravel) together for 40 years and I would like to go back and mountain ride in Moab. SUBSCRIBED

Hi. I watched this about a year and a half after you put it up. I hope that by now you've gotten more comfortable with your 4Runner and it's capabilities. If you don't attempt Hell's Gate, and I assume you didn't, there's nothing super extreme on that trail. Even though it's a base model SR5, your 4Runner can easily complete that trail. It can also take you many beautiful, out of the way places, with ease. I have a 2018 4Runner TRD Off Road model. Which came stock with a few more off road specific items & functions. I've been slowly modding it. It has a 3 inch lift, stock size BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO2 tires, rock sliders, and a front trail camera. I got the front camera because it is hard to see the trail and where it goes, over the hood and it's one of the better mods, in my opinion. I'm 75 years old and have been off roading for 50 years in many different vehicles. That said, I'm constantly surprised by where the 4Runner can go. It's a great machine! I enjoyed your video, thanks.

An awesome comment The Instructor! I think the front camera you have and the 3 inch lift are the two of the biggest modifications to make the 4Runner even more capable. I haven’t been back to Moab since that video or done much more off roading as I live in South Florida which is flat as a pancake. I’m going to be 64 in December and my bucket list does include, more off-roading. Props to you sir for your long-term offloading experience. I’m sure your experience has given you lots of confidence when off-roading. Thanks again for the great comment and watching the video. I’ll never forget that day. I did Hells Revenge last year but it was in a Yamaha side by side. It was crazy. Once you get used to the idea that the vehicle is capable of doing it you can relax a bit but at first it is genuinely scary. I dont think I would do it in anything but a dedicated off roader though. I would be too scared of damaging a $50k vehicle. Even that first obstacle is crazy. My wife was yelling dont go this way and I was saying I cant go the other way. Massive drop offs on both sides. Thank you Brandywine I did not have issues with my KO2’s however I believe you when you say stock smoothies were fine because the T4R is so capable I can’t even believe it. Sooo proud to own one. Thanks for viewing. I’m heading back to Moab in a week. Maybe fins and things this time? Not sure but certainly will hit Shaffer trail again.

I have a 3rd gen with a 2" lift on it and was wondering if I would want to spend more money and go higher to conquer terrain like this. Seeing this made me decide against it. These trucks are amazing.

Yes they certainly are Marfee truly a very formidable vehicle. I would be concerned about being too high and top-heavy at Hells Revenge. Haaa Seriously though that 3rd Gen would chew it up. I had a 1999 limited in desert dune. Was my pride and joy. 😎

Great video Tim. I own a 2018 TRD Off Road 4runner but living here in South Florida like you I haven't had a chance to test it out on some trails yet. I've traveled to Utah many times but have always flown to Vegas where I rent a car , usually a compact or small crossover. I would love to drive my 4runner out there to drive on some trails. Just out of curiosity how long did it take you to make the drive from Sarasota?
@SarasotaTim

Hi Miguel I’ve driven cross country many times even on a Harley and my goal is 600 miles a day. It’s 2200 miles from Sarasota so do the math. I’ve also drove until I needed sleep then just crawl in the back or recline the seat and recharge for only a couple hrs and get back at it 😂. So I like to charge it when I travel I want to get there. Might slow way down if traveling with my wife as she would need a room and frequent stops lol but I’ve done my trips solo. I hope you can hit the road and do what I did you’ll never forget it. Just crash in the back let her idle if it’s to warm and regular rest areas on the freeway or truck stops off the exits along the way is safe and free. Don’t forget Walmart parking lots too. 😎

Thanks Wil for your comment and yeah it was a real heart stopper a couple times especially at the end coming out of that last part and one of the tires had NO footing and I started to roll to the passenger side. Had it not been for just letting off my brake and moving a little more forward so the tire began to touch again I may have flipped? But I made it and won’t return hahaha. I do my off-roading on moderate trails and sand dunes from now on. 😎

Just drove there from Florida pulled in and began by myself. That was an accomplishment! I saw all I needed to see of that place and won’t do it again unless in a rental side-by-side. Having to take care of the ones in front of our complex I HATE those things now.. :) I'm a TN hillbilly- back home now in southwest VA (just over the line from TN>) and I'll NEVER leave it again.

“I will never come back here again… I will never not trust this truck” - 26:09 Trust your gear is a common saying in rock climbing. Glad you found that nirvana with the 4Runner here. I rented a side by side last year and did hells revenge. That first uphill approach is an instant WTF am I doing here moment for sure! I saw several brand new 4 runners (TRD off road) and new Broncos with paper tags sitting bone stock and taking the hard lines, scraping under carriage and taking hard hits, it was insane. I have a 2020 stock 4runner 4x4 and would never take it there, but it sure was fun watching you do it and to know I could too if needed! Thanks for sharing that adventure.
