Oh my gosh, how did he come up with all these. As a teacher in Pennsylvania, two buddies and I came up to Canada to do some fishing a number of years ago. Fortunately, but by accident, Stompin' Tom was having a concert one of those nights at a hockey rink - help me out - near Lake Nippising (close to North Bay I believe) where we were staying. I had never heard of him, let alone seeing or hearing him. But after eating at a restaurant, we saw there was a concert. We were looking for something to do, so we went. I am so glad that we did. Wow, did he put on a show. In fact, it was so good I think I purchased every album and box set he had there. I couldn't wait to get home to play them, and play them I did. This would have been around 1975. In fact, having taught high school English, I used some of the lyrics to his songs in introducing creative writing, and the kids loved them. I know he passed away some time ago, but having seen and heard him perform, there was no doubt Stompin' Tom loved Canada and all its people. But as an American, I can also feel the love he generated to Canada and all the great people who live there. I don't know which I enjoyed more, fishing for Walleyes or seeing and listening to a great concert. As a side note, I think that on that same billing was Wilf Carter. Don't mean to go on, but listening to these songs also brings back some old memories of when my wife Marcie and I had one of our last vacations together before she passed away from cancer some years ago, was the great 10 days we had traveling and staying in both Nova Scotia and P.E.I. and getting to see a number of places Tom makes reference to in "Ca-na-d-a" What a country! You can all be proud!

We have two things in common Sir. My lovely wife of 33 years passed from carcinoma Oct 2020. I used to sing these songs over and over until she'd look at me with a frustrated smile because she had these easy lyrics imprinted in her mind. Second commonality was TEACHING!!! I used "Manitoba" with an overhead projector for place names, the provincial flower, the Red River, etc. Also employed "The Capital Song" for provinces and capital cities. That unit was months old and kids would ask to sing that song (I suspect because I insisted they yell out each city name). It was classic! Velox Versutus Vigilans

I’m a yank and I love Stompin’ Tom. An old band mate of mine used to play in another band before the one I had with him that was based in Canada. He used to show me all sorts of fantastic Canadian folk and country. I loved every bit of it, but Stompin Tom towered above them all. It’s a pity he’s largely unknown outside of Canada because his music is a true treasure. I would even say he is probably one of the greatest North American songwriters ever, if not among the greats throughout the world. What I genuinely love the most about Stompin’ Tom was his deep reverence for his Canadian homeland. Being a history and folklore enthusiast, I think I learned more about Canada from Stompin’ Tom than any of the books I had. Stompin’ Tom Connors is to Canada what men like Ronnie Drew and Luke Kelly are to Ireland, or Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams are to the U.S. Canadians should never forget him and always honour the legacy he left to his dear country.

Hi Charles, I moved from Europe to the Maritimes in 1982. I dig what you have to say about learning more about Canada from Tom's songs than other places. It is the same for me. While I am not into the musical genre of Tom, my God, what a storyteller he is! Tom is my hero (after my dad). There are greater and more polished artists, but when it comes to being true to yourself and to your place of origin, no one beats Tom. Canada will never forget Tom.

Lyrics Have ya heard the news in Newfoundland, rollin' around the rock? How Reggie brought for Margie home a cowsee dungsee clock? With Margie bein' a farm girl, she almost took a fit; To find the cowsee dungsee clock was really made of it! The clock was from Toronto, and her mind was soon made up- She said to Reggie, "get the cow, and load her on da truck, We're headin' for Ontario and we're off to make 'er big!" 'Cause Margo's got the cargo b'y and Reggie's got da rig! Reggie's got the rig, Reggie's got the rig; Margo's got the cargo b'y, and Reggie's got the rig! Now they're rollin' through the Maritimes, the truck was nearly full. The cow began to ball, she was lonesome for da bull; The mountie pulled dem over, "is there somethin' I can do?" "Go right ahead sir", Margie said, "climb in the back and moo!" Now when they got to Montreal they missed the autoroute- But they found that everyone in town was glad to help dem out! "The sooner ya hit Toronto", they said, "the sooner you'll make 'er big"- Cause Margo got the cargo b'y, and Reggie's got the rig! Reggie's got the rig, Reggie's got the rig; Margo's got the cargo b'y, and Reggie's got the rig! Now the truck was overflowin' when Toronto hit the rise; The four-O-one was full of dung and the cab was full of flies. "We're losin' lots of money", Reg, "We can't afford to stop!" "We gotta find the place that makes the cowsee dungsee clock!" Well I wish ya coulda been there on the corner of Queen and Yonge, When Margo found the company and she dumped her load o' dung! And when she found da office she was singin' and doin' a jig! Margo's got the cargo b'ys and Reggie's got the rig! Reggie got the rig, Reggie got the rig; Margo brought the cargo b'ys, and Reggie brought the rig! It was later in the evenin' when they heard from Mr. Judge, "I don't know what to give yas, but I'll never hold a grudge!" "I tink a tousand dollars would be fair to hand ya down, And thirty days of lodging will be free upon da town!" Now Margo says to Reggie, "What a helluva deal we've struck!" "We mighta lost da cow, b'y, but still we got da truck!" And now dey're back in Newfoundland, dey're loadin' up the the pig, 'Cause Margo got da cargo, b'y and Reggie's got the rig! Reggie's got the rig, Reggie's got the rig; Margo's got the cargo b'y, and Reggie's got the rig! Margo's got the cargo b'y, and Reggie's got the rig!
