Hi Richard, The reason for not using your 5 rule (f5, ISO 500, 15 secs) was just testing and playing around? f4 and iso 640 catches more light. Did u have the feeling it changes your light painting style and results? At around 13:00 the camera follows you. Is it a face detection device? Or did you have a camera minion with you? BTW your calendars arrived yesterday :-) thumbs up and of course great video and story in the beginning. Hey woudnt it be fun to ask your viewers for other funny/ exciting stories and present them in another q&a video ? Greetings Steffen

Thanks so much for watching again Steffen. I'm pleased the calendars arrived .. fantastic. I will often experiment with my camera settings. As long as they're are somewhere in the ballpark it doesn't really matter. I have tested a number of devices to try and get the camera to follow me. On this shoot I used a DJI Ronin SC gimabal to do it .. but I didn't like that device and sold it. I sometimes use the DJI Osmo Pocket . .which is better but still not great .. my search continues. I do all my filming by myself . .no helpers.

Absolutely astonishing photos, great video!! A question if you don't mind... I have Nikon D5500, recently bought 50mm 1.8G lens. Is that lens good for some nightscape images, or it would be realy necessary to invest in other lens? Thank you! :-)
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching. The 50mm f1.8 is a great low light lens, however on your camera it's very long .. in other words you won't fit much of the foreground elements in the shot. Most people using that camera would be using somewhere between 11mm - 24mm lens focal length.

Richard . . . LOVE your work! I learn something new every time, even though sometimes you are covering similar material. You do a great job instructing on how to do celestial photography. I have two ideas for you . . . first, your videos are so well done, you could do a complete series on how to make your "how to" videos! Your editing and smooth flow from concept to concept is really so well done! Second, next time you are shooting your foreground images with your flashtorch, launch your drone and either have it illuminate your foreground subject from the air, or video you doing your light painting. I don't know how difficult it would be to night fly the drone in such darkness, but just a thought . . . . Fair skies and good shooting!
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for watching Gordon, and I really appreciate your comments. I will do something "behind the scenes" of a video shoot one day. The drone at night is a good idea however really tricky to pull off .. especially with trees around the subject.

Terrific video Richard, good work. I just got back from a trip to Turkey, due to your inspiration I decided to try a Milky Way shot while on Olympos beach. The area is extremely dark (almost no light pollution). I needed something in the foreground so on the way there a bought a cheap nylon tent and an led torch. I used photopills to locate the Milky Way and set up the shot based on your advice. I've never really seen the Milky Way in such darkness, it was amazing! I used sequator to blend the sky shots and photoshop to blend the light painted foreground. I was really happy with the results and now that I'm back I'll start scouting locations here. Thanks for all your helpful videos. Loved your shots of the brick hut did you give any thought to putting a light in the interior and what's your advice for focusing on the building in the dark? Cheers.

An option that is quite good is Affinity Photo. No subscription and it has capabilities beginning to rival PS. I believe it costs about $50 US. I use the Adobe products primarily but have begin looking for substitutes. Affinity is the best I have found to date. Tons of tutorials inline too. It does. It does not have a catalog system like LR. That is one big drawback for me.

Hi Richard just watched your latest video, loved it. I do have a quick question if you don't mind, when you shoot a panoramic like this one, what is your shooting sequence is it important, ie: do you shoot top row or bottom row first, do you shoot left to right and how much overlap do you have top to bottom. Many thanks if you offer some help, I'll be running around Eyre Penn for the next week and will give it a go if I find a good subject, maybe Tummy Bay silos. Many thanks Rick.

Hi Rick, thanks so much for watching. As I mentioned to someone else on this topic. I usually start on the bottom row at either end then travel along to the other end .. then go up to the second row and travel again to the other end. If there is a third row i do it all again. I usually have about a 50% overlap. I don't find it matters which end I start with.

Hi Richard. Great shots. Quick question, for your background/sky shots you sometimes don't open the aperture fully. Any specific reason? Thanks for the vids. VERY informative. Ray

Thanks a lot Ray. I don't fully open the aperture because it helps with corner sharpness as well as lessening various lens aberrations.

@@nightscapeimages.richard Gotcha! Thanks for that. Every night photography "lesson" has the aperture fully open as gospel. I tend not to be too bothered about distortion at the corners but I'll give this a try. I have the 20mm too. Great lens.

Thanks for watching George. I'm not sure of the model but the brand is Slik and I bought them from Office Works believe it or not. I did modify and add the little ball heads on the top.

Awesome mate, loved it 👏👏 Just a bit puzzled if you have infinite focus for the stars and are far enough away that you have infinite focus on the foreground subject then why do you need to refocus on the foreground wouldn't it be in sharp focus already?
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Thanks heaps Keith. It depends on which lens I'm using. With the ultra wides like the 14mm or 16mm it would be in focus but once you get over 20mm it gets a bit harder to maintain focus so I always check it.

This video highlighted a question I've wondered for a while now. How you go about gaining access to properties. What technique do you use and how do property owners generally respond? With other "freestyle" access to properties, if the owners find you there during the day or night how do they respond?
@nightscapeimages.richard

Thanks so much for watching Guints. I always try to seek out the owners of properties and ask them permission to go on their land. I've never had anyone refuse me yet. The owner of this particular property thanks me for actually asking because there had been plenty of other photographers just walk on their without a second thought. It's important for them to feel comfortable with you as a person so I always show then the type of work I do .. sometimes I'll give them a calendar and often a print after I've taken the shot. It works well for me.

@@nightscapeimages.richard thanks for your reply. I'm still at the very basic level and after getting more than just a kit lens on my 80D I'm sure I'll be seeking out one of your group sessions. I've always been a night owl. There's something special about the solitude and being out at night so this has really opened up my mind to a new passion I never thought existed. Thank you.

Did you use constant light in timelapse? How many lights? What interval did you use between shots?
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Yes I did use constant lights. One from the right and one from the left. I used the Z96 video lights on a very low level. I used a 5 second interval between shots.
I have an earlier version of that time lapse slider takes about forty minutes from one side of the slider to the next and Yes if the slider is going slow enough you don't need to do the shot move shot move ! I use my genie mini in the same way with my view+ set on a variable interval eg 6 seconds during the day and 34ish seconds for ngiht
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Yes that's right John. I usually have it going slow enough to get about 2-1/2 hours from one side to the other.

When you do a double row, do you do all of one row and then the second?
@nightscapeimages.richard
5 жыл бұрын
Hey Theresa, yes I start at the bottom at either end and then progress along the bottom row then move straight up and then progress through the second row. If there is a third row I do the same at the other end. I know people have all sorts of different workflows but that works for me. I always have a lot of overlap .. as much as 50%. Hope that's helpful.

@@nightscapeimages.richard It is helpful. I have typically gone up and down, over and down, over and up because I was afraid the str would move too much to stitch together. Your way, I think, would be easier.
