I might be very old school, but... 1) Queuing in front of a shop? That's not luxury. 2) Producing goods under despicable, inhuman conditions? That's not luxury. 3) Strategically placed ass-kissing in order to be considered to maybe one day spend money on goods? That's not luxury. 4) Delivering poor, awful quality that doesn't deserve the price tag? That's not luxury. 5) Lying about limited editions and exclusive releases that will neeeeever be available again? That's not luxury.

They’re beautiful to look at but I don’t wear them nearly enough because I don’t have anywhere really to wear them and that was before the current economic times. Before the economy crashing the last 2 years I’d at least wear my bags when I was off work, if only to the grocery store or something like that but now I’m concerned about being too flashy and bringing unwanted and dangerous attention to myself.

When I was 12 my mom took me to the LV on Bloor Street in Toronto. I had my fake LV from *esluxy* on my arm and thought I was cute. The sweet sales ladies let me try on a bag and a pair of heels knowing we were not wealthy and couldn't afford to purchase anything. It as really nice. No one seemed to care I had a fake bag and I felt special. They even gave me a paper shopping bag which I used as a lunch bag for weeks after! :) Who cares if people don't have real ones? I'm 30 now and ironically, although I can afford them I still prefer real people with fake bags than fake people with real bags. Just saying :) (not that everyone who carries a real one is bad or vice versa.) Just means I don't care if people carry fakes.

I have very recently, at 60, discovered an obsession with bags. I've dipped my toe into some entry level luxury bags (Fendi Baguette, Mini Loewe Puzzle, LV Speedy, etc.) However, lack of quality and unethical treatment of employees are deal breakers for me. I will wait in line, I really don't care that my bag is frequently faked and that, therefore, people might think mine is a fake, but I will not spend a fortune on a poorly made bag, or on a company that doesn't treat it's employees well. I thought the point of luxury was that you got a well made product and that the company was more transparent than fast fashion in terms of their business practices.

Some people don’t want to look like a Xmas tree all year round, instead they buy garments which are made to last. Some Italian brands deliver extremely high quality clothes and shoes and are not marketed same way, but believe me these are not cheap either. I suppose luxury, for all of us, is how something makes us feel. For me personally luxury is not just big logo's! Luxury to me is all about quality. So whether it's a big name or a small artisan brand, if it makes my heart sing, it's luxury. I don't have a huge collection of high end bags - I have two, and both were very considered and both were bought preloved (because as you say, they don't hold their value and the market is saturated). I do have more mid range bags, and these give me just as much pleasure when I use them. I buy the best quality I can afford, and I've always tended to avoid big logo's which I think is down to me being more of an introvert. So the "quiet luxury" trend (how I hate that term), is almost my style and has been for many years, although I don't wear all neutrals and I love pops of red. I'd say it's more about elevated basics, but with a casual edge. It feels luxurious for me to wear an item that I've owned and worn for many years, that's still in amazing condition and it still feels current in my wardrobe. As for luxury having had it's day, I'd say it's more of a hiatus! Whenever there is unrest, be it financial or political, people will buy things with longevity that are more low key. They're not willing to take a risk on things that may be here today, gone tomorrow. In your face, luxury will be back when the financial and political pictures are looking brighter.

Actually this weekend I went shopping in an other state ( I’m in the US) because I wanted to look at some exotic bags. I actually saw one in Dior that was amazing, but I walked away. It would have been just an other super expensive bag suited for special occasions only. That’s what it is with exotics, so I decided that I’m done! I got it out of my system. I’m adding some jewelry pieces but nothing crazy. I don’t think it’s shallow to buy what you love. Being strong enough to not worry about judgment is so hard. I love luxury. But I also love diff things too. I’ve always said there is more to me than handbags but doesn’t mean I don’t love them. My character and my morals and beliefs are not defined by me deciding to buy a luxury bag x

I am not sure if I should mention brand names here feeling the responsibility of naming something which are not good. But may I suggest you watch a KZitemr called Tanner Leatherstein? You might have known him already. He is famous for dissecting big brand named bags and estimates their cost, rate their leather quality and workmanship etc. At the same time, he will tell you some smaller names as well. He himself sells his products too but I found the variety is not enough. But it's really interesting to see him dissecting handbags 👜 😄

IMOP, for the prices paid, the luxury brands should be able to tell us, from beginning to end, that the items we are purchasing are ethically sourced. If I purchase a food item at the store that is labeled "certified organic" or an item is labeled "Fair Trade" certified, that company had to jump through hoops to earn those designations. Why don't these luxury brands hold themselves to the same standards? Why CAN'T they tell us the source of each element of their bags or clothing items? Luxury is gone, IMOP. It's just really expensive fast fashion. I'm totally over it.

I can book an appointment online to store visit, so there is no need for queuing up in front of the store like I am waiting at a food bank. I refuse to shop in any stores where there is a queue. I spent my money on getting new screens for my windows, and new security doors installed. The new screens are pet proof, made of steel, and practically impenetrable. I can leave my windows open without fear that my cats get out, or bugs or people get in. Sure, I could have bought a couple of bags, but this was to improve my home, and I think this was more important in the long run. I paid nearly 6K for all of these screens and doors. Cheaper than a bag or two. (Jan Griffiths).

Gold was scraped off the top, scratches all over the bottom, and only after pestering them did they agree to replace it. Then they went MIA amd never kept their word. $600 for lipstick that is the worst quality and zero customer service. It isn’t worth it for a name. I’m only buying quality products from companies with amazing service. Plus, you can find brands with better quality for less, with actual gold hardware for bags. Right the point you make about fakes is the biggest reason I don't bother. As much as I might like a luxury bag, many have been faked and I don't live in an area where people value luxury, so they probably would assume it's fake anyway. I just feel good with Coach, Tory Burch or something like a Polene bag. I want quality over trying hard to show off. Also in my point of view putting that money into assets sounds like a better option to me. Makes more money.

I am in a position that, if I buy luxury, I buy pre-loved, when I work up the guts. I worry about fakes. I don’t want to pay 4 + digits for a bag, period. I have watched the quality of luxury suffer due to the absurd number of releases and the demand they generate. I have watched the price of these subpar skyrocket, as if any bag on the face of the earth is worth 5+ digits. The greed and blindness of the luxury houses is driving a downward spiral that could severely damage or destroy these luxury houses. Anymore, if I want to buy new, I am more inclined to explore contemporary brands that give me great quality at prices I can handle. My favorite is Dooney and Bourke. ❤❤❤
