Gautama Buddha was born over centuries ago and a prophecy was told about him that he would either become a spiritual person or a great king. His father, being a strong ruler himself, didn't like the idea of this son taking the spiritual path and he wanted Buddha to become a great ruler so he tried not to expose Buddha to the outside world and kept him within the palace surrounded by only pleasant things , entertainment and knowledge, pleasure, but one day Buddha wanted to explore what was outside the walls of this beautiful palace and world he was surrounded by. And once he went out, he saw the suffering, pain and sorrow in the world, this made him choose the spiritual path and he attained enlightenment. This story is a perfect example of how it doesn't matter if we have all the luxuries in the world. It doesn’t guarantee happiness. But we keep chasing worldly things and searching for happiness in the outside world. Because we think that if we have some amount of money in our account or we go on a dream vacation or we have the perfect marriage, all these will give us the happiness that we always wanted ! But is this true? May be not ...chasing happiness isn't making us happier but making us even more miserable instead! This video will explain this in detail..and what we should be doing instead.
We humans try to find happiness in the outside world by doing things like travelling, going out to movies, pursuing activities like trekking, etc in search of happiness. Although travelling gives us a kind of contentment, broadens our horizons and increases our levels of happiness, the happiness doesn't last more than a few days.. Socrates criticised travel by saying that- “ why do we wonder why globe-trotting does not help you, seeing that you always take yourself with you, the reason which set you wandering is ever at your heels”
Meaning the reason why you wanted to travel is always with you - you, your mindset.
But, Imagine this, you planned your dream vacation to london, you booked the flights and you finally arrived, but you fell ill and you spent most of the time in a hospital waiting to be diagnosed or resting in your hotel room?Even if you have had a few happy moments, your attempt to get the most out of the holiday would be a disaster because it hasn't met your expectations at all! The very thing we expected to be a source of happiness became a source of distress because of the fact that we don't have control over the circumstances! But what if the trip was as pleasurable as you expected? How much happier would you have been ? it wouldn't have mattered much! Because when it comes to obtaining pleasure there is a catch! The happiness doesn't last long.
What is the reason we seek pleasure in the first place? Just because it is the opposite of pain, yes, we pursue pleasure to avoid pain as simple as that!
A psychological theory called Hedonism says that all human behaviour is motivated by pleasure!
According to the Oxford dictionary, Hedonism is the ethical theory that pleasure (in the sense of satisfaction of desires) is the highest and proper aim of human life! However, this pursuit of pleasure is complex because there are different types of pleasure and different intensities of pleasure.
This was explained by the hedonist philosopher Epicurus who suggested that there are two types of pleasures/desires- one of them is natural, needed for our survival and available widely- like food but the other type is not natural, not necessary and very difficult to attain - liike fame wealth etc- so this means we need to choose what pleasures we are trying to pursue ..because the right kind of pleasure we pursue become our highest good.
