We have a massive amount of people throughout the USA that pride themselves as being ignorant. Pride in never reading books. Proud that they never use facts or data when they communicate. Proud to believe things that are not truth because they don't fit with their ignorant beliefs and ignorant ways of life. We have huge media that uses these folks ignorance to make their millions in advertising. This is our great divide in the USA. As more knowledge becomes available to all, our divide becomes greater. The ignorant keep talking of an upcoming civil war. They don't realize that it has already started. The people of knowledge have started pulling away and giving up them as hopeless. Almost all of the victims were women and children and almost all of them were killed with knives and axes. In this way, the brave Ukrainians saved ammunition. Many Ukrainians I know can't really speak Ukrainian. They are actively "trying" to speak it. It's mostly Ukrainians who come from the east of the country, especially Kharkiv. When we communicate via txt or email it's in the "other" language. I do get it. Language is fluid and varies depending on where you live. It's the same in Switzerland, depending on where they live. Close to Italy, Germany, France or Austria. Culture is way more important than language. My Ukrainian friends who speak the "other" language are 100% Ukrainian in culture. Totally. I wish more people spread your message. It's important. 👍🏻🇬🇧❤️🇺🇦

About 25 years ago I got the opportunity to go to Ukraine's far west (Zakarpattia) and I have followed the country ever since. About a year ago, I talked to a Ukrainian woman who had recently moved to my area in the US. She was from Lviv. It was the first time I could talk to a native Ukrainian person about the war, and it was a good conversation, but difficult. At the end, I told her that I hoped her friends and family were staying safe. "No one is safe in Ukraine", she said. I felt so bad! 😭 I am sure she knew I meant well, but I still regret saying that 😥 I hope I have more time for Ukrainian in the coming year. 🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦♥️

Several European languages have their own unique Latin-based alphabets, including French (and Danish, Swedish, German...) Some linguists might think of Danish, Norwegian and Swedish as simply dialects of a core nordic language, meanwhile Swedes pretend not to understand Danish and insist on speaking English. 😂 Some linguists have - partly in jest - said that a language is a dialect with an army. By that criteria, Ukrainian certainly is a strong language. ❤

Indeed it has become sort of a stereotypical mistake, but the real nonsense is when westerners call the country "the Ukraine" instead of Ukraine. Russians favour to say "na Ukraine" because they find that offensive, and Ukrainians get pissed too, but very ironically that is technically NOT a problem: the form "na Ukraïni" comes from a directly specific, thousand years old case of saying "na Rusi" (on Rus' Land) - which at this point greatly showcases straight historical inheritance from Rus', turning tables around in the matter of hilarious Kremlin myth about "new-made" country.

For people who need some perspective: London is in the Southern part of England, Kiev is in the Northern part of Ukraine. Despite Kiev being in the Northern part of Ukraine it is still more South than London. Crimea is in fact shares the same Parallel (45th) that goes through the lower quarter of France. I am originally from Edmonton Alberta (affectionately called Edmonchuk due to the high population of Ukrainians). Just East of Edmonton is a town named Vegreville, the "Welcome to Vegreville" sign is a giant Ukrainian Easter Egg. My heart is broken at this senseless war, I have no words to describe the ache.

I have made that mistake with Ukrainians I knew, until one day a girl educated me and, to my realization, told me Ukrainian and ruZZian are two different languages (until then I used to think Ukrainians spoke ruzzian with a different accent). As a Brazilian, I should have known better, since people constantly try to speak Spanish with me. What's curious, though, is that Brazilians usually understand Spanish quite easily, while Spanish-speakers can't understand a word I say in Portuguese. I'm guessing it's kind of the same for you, ruzzians can't understand Ukrainians, but you can understand them? In any case, it's curious how understanding of languages sometimes only go one way, an unfortunate mirroring of the asymmetric relationship between countries. That's why I kind of like the idea of Esperanto. Hugs from Brazil.

If I look for a positive in all this, I guess it would be that at least they have heard of Ukraine, the trouble with that positive is possibly that they probably only know about it because of the aggression of your neighbour and I'm sorry for that too. A large part of the problem is that the media has largely lost interest in this war of aggression and has mostly stopped reporting on it, so people just don't know what's going on, but unlike some of us, don't bother to stay informed. I am Danish, and born just north of Flensburg, so in North-Slesvig. My grandmother was technically "German" by birth, she was born in 1902 and between 1864 and 1920, the region was German. I know how this can lead to strong emotions and antagonizing. And perhaps this is too early to deal with fir some. But in Southern Jutland/Slesvig/Schleswig people have made it work - nobody blames their neighbors implicitly for the actions of Prussia, Bismarck or Hitler. Through marriage or migration, I have many German relatives. (And Swedish and Norwegian, even Australian - at which point you might wonder if I'm royal: No I am not! 😂) They are all still family. I like the German language, I find it as poetic and beautiful as any other. Language is a tool for people to understand each other. If you have neighbors who speak a different language, talk with them in whatever language you share.

People can be so insensitive. 😔 I don't know if I have any Ukrainian blood, but I have Mennonite heritage; my family immigrated to Canada from an area in Zaporizhia. I've never been there, and I don't speak Ukrainian (yet), but whether I have actual Ukrainian blood or not, it's part of me. Stay strong, Inna. Slava Ukraini. 💙

I hope people are just stupid, because if you are able to ask/say such things that’s just shocking 😮 And if they are on the dark side of the world, stay the hell away from you lovely Ukrainian people. 💙💛🇺🇦 Stay strong, thank you for your amazing work teaching us Ukrainian, and try to ignore such questions/comments… they are not worth your energy… Слава Україні! Героям слава 💪🏻🇺🇦

Now that you are in London, please advise if you note the differences between English and American? Vase in English and Ukrainian is pronounced the same, both languages being European, but I think you pronounce vase in the American way, using their accent. My favourite example is toilet. Toilet is the same word across Europe and all English speaking countries except America. I would appreciate your observation on this, now that you are in England, in Europe.

Hi Inna, I'm an American who knew almost nothing about Ukr at the start of the war, but I did have one or two Internet pen pals who it turned out were from Ukr. Let me tell you my experiences. When the war first started, I started getting many messages from my Ukr friends and their friends asking if USA or Europe knew what was going on and if anybody outside Ukr cared. I greatly cheered up some people by sending photos of Ukr flags everywhere in my neighborhood in Boston! I also heard some horrible stories like a girl in Kharkiv who was in the hospital on the first day or the war, and a missle hit the hospital, so this girl had to jump out of her hospital bed and run home on her own, even though she was in a lot of pain. This was when the war was new and everybody wanted to talk. I will never forget these stories. Next I started getting many questions about Germany and other EU countries because these people were considering evacuating and knew almost nothing about the EU. I was able to contact German friends and find out proper procedures. I'm sure during this time I asked all the wrong questions but it's the only way I was able to learn the truth about Ukr. I can understand why to an American Ukr and Rus seem a bit similar because they both use Cyrillic. But now I think of Ukr like Canada, where there are two languages (French and English) both with the Roman alphabet, but very different. I also understand that Ukr people want nothing to do with Rus but for some it's the only language they know because of evil Rus history. I can set my Telegram chat to translate from either so I can use whichever language my Ukr contact wants. More recently, I find Ukr people want to talk about normal things - shopping, cooking, raising family, and they want to hear about my life and my vacations and other normal things. I have learned about many delicious-looking Ukr dishes, and I have sent many amazing photos from different parts of the USA. My contacts don't really want to talk about the war because I'm sure that affects them all enough every day so I'm glad to talk about normal things. Sometimes a contact wants to tell me that there was a big arrival (missle) and they are scared, and I'm glad to be sympathetic and I do worry. Other times I will get a request to send a little money from a contact for night vision goggles or something for a family member joining the army. The Ukr exchange rate is so favorable that I am easily able to help now and then. I've also learned there is a big generation gap. The people I talk to are pretty young, but they know EU, Internet, Instagram, western music, and don't mind the idea of going to EU. But their parents speak only Rus, were taught to hate and fear the West, and have no idea how to use the Internet. It has made for some intense issues when a family is trying to decide what to do. More legacy of evil Rus. Anyway I've learned that Ukr is a wonderful beautiful country with many kind people, and I'm embarrassed that I didn't think to visit during previous trips to Europe. The Ukr people deserve all the help we can give them. I get my war information from the news so I don't have to ask any Ukr people, and you are right that seems a lot better. I had a few minutes of fame at the start of the war. Several Ukr people asked how to get to the USA and at the time it was almost impossible, so in frustration I wrote a letter to the Boston Globe, the major newspaper in Boston. I didn't expect to hear anything but I got a call back from a reporter, and they ended up writing a whole op-ed piece in the paper about my frustration and some deserving Ukr people who I was trying to help but couldn't. I don't know if it changed any minds but I'm glad my voice was seen by many people! I greatly appreciate your videos and your stories about your life and Ukraine, so thank you!

I loved you sharing your experience with Ukrainians and supporting Ukraine. In London, Inna is meeting people who aren’t primarily Americans, though at first I assumed that is who she was talking about, lol.

The Ukrainian people are remarkably brave for the courage they have shown standing against evil. Many people don't necessarily ask these questions out of intent to hurt. They might just be ignorant of the differences between the two countries. Best wishes from Canada. Slava Ukraini!

Шановна Инночка, "прівіт, прівіт"! Please realize that ignorant questions from insensitive people are very common and just triggers for your anxiety and depression! We all feel your pain and support you wholeheartedly! Here in Philadelphia area in USA, locals still refer to ALL post-Soviet immigrants as RUSSIANS, be it to ppl from Uzbekistan, or Armenia, or Georgia , or Tuva, or Ukraine! It's infuriating! That's despite Philly having been a home to the 2nd largest Ukrainian speaking community in North America, even since 1950s! Ну, тупіе вони, аборігены! Дюже дякую Вам! Слава Україіні! Перемога близко!!!

A small story about ukr language. Last summer my nephew was getting married in ohio. It turns out his mom is ukrainian, but brought to the usa as a young child so she didn't remember ukr or speak the language, in fact she rarely told people her heritage. But she had asked her father where in Ukraine the family was from before he died. She didn't understand the answer but she recorded what he said. I was able to send the recording to a new ukr friend who told me it was a village in a certain oblast not too far from a city. I was able to tell her and her sisters about their origin because i had met some wonderful ukrainians online! Also i sent pictures of my nephew and my ukr friends all said he looked like a cossack, definitely ukrainian blood! 😂

Inna see it from this perspective. As a Dane people often are confused about Danish, Norwegian and Swedish can different? It's often the case that we share a lot words but the meaning can sometimes differ a lot and people often we can easily understand each other, that's often not the case! However I understand all three but can easily understand why some don't. So Danish is NOT Norwegian nor Swedish and neither is Ruzzian Ukrainian!
