Will vs Going To vs Present Continuous Lesson:
• Will vs Be Going To vs...
** LESSON SUMMARY **
"Will" is often overused by English learners. This is because many see this as the future simple and, therefore, use it to talk about future actions.
However, when talking about future plans, use BE GOING TO and the PRESENT CONTINUOUS instead.
For example:
- I'm going to do housework tomorrow
- We're playing soccer tomorrow
- We're going to our friend's house this weekend
WILL is used when you decide to do something in the moment. For example:
- Okay, I'll do it
WILL is used for future facts:
- Paul won't be in the office tomorrow
WILL is used for the first conditional:
- If it rains tomorrow, we won't go
If you want to learn these types of phrases off by heart (know them automatically), then join the To Fluency Program. There are over 40 sentences for future actions and over 1,000 in total.
