Right now is time frame where there’s a ton of hype of new products but at the end of the day sometimes it is just hype. And to be clear, it’s not just companies creating hype, often you’ll see folks on social media claiming the latest and greatest without really understand the product category or even the product. Be smart with your money, do your own research even when you’re taking advice from us. Every application is different, every product is a bit different, so no two people are going to use cameras 100% the same….. but there are a few items that really stand out to us as big time money wasters.
Here’s our 5 biggest trail camera money wasters.
SD Card Tablet Reader
A typical tablet designated to read SD cards and store photos is going to run you around $100. Another con is having to carry or pack in a rather large object into the timber. Most of us have our phone attached to us at all times so Save some cash, use a reader compatible with your phone. You can pick one up for around $30. We have a whole video on what we feel is the best card reader for your phone. We’ll link that in the description.
Buying Cell Cameras Based on Antennas
I cannot stress this enough! All certified devices go through the same exact certification testing to be permitted onto cellular networks. What that means is, EVERY cellular device is going to have very similar reception and transmission signal performance. Now there is some technical difference with circuitry design and HW that may impact a cell cam’s performance on the signal side, but the stock antennas mean very little.. The exception to this thought is you getting a total lemon of a product, which of course can happen and external high gain antennas. The bottom line here is that don’t fall for some yahoo on social claiming his cameras get better service because they have a larger stock antenna.
High Speed/Large Capacity SD cards
We’ve talked about this in the past and it simply boils down to understanding that trail cameras write marginal sized files when compared to profession photography and videography equipment. High end cards are design to handle files from professional equipment putting out rather large files. Save yourself some dough and stick with the card your manufacture recommends.
Lock Boxes
This probably comes as a shock. We manufacture and sell quite a few security boxes every year. However, We really don’t use them ourselves. If someone wants to steal your camera they are probably willing to go through any means to get it. We’ve seen trees completely cut down to get a camera. You’re probably saying to yourself….What about damage prevent??? To make a lock box work, the flash unit, lens, and PIR need cut outs, those cutouts lead to a decent chance of that camera being damaged by bears. Just our opinion, we have a really large sample size on this, and we just feel lock boxes are overrated from every angle.
Cheap batteries
Everyone gets caught up in this with lower up front costs but when you actually break down the cost analysis of alkaline batteries costing $.20/battery vs $1 for a decent lithium the cost actually evens out quite a bit. Plus that lithium battery is going to run your camera a lot more efficiently.
