The Cotswold Line is an 86 mile cross country route between Oxford and Hereford, operated by GWR. The line opened in stages between 1851 and 1861 and was constructed by the nominally independent Oxford, Worcester and Wolverhampton Railway which was soon taken over by the much bigger Great Western Railway.
British Rail made economies to the route, the line being singled in 1972 with only a few passing places at Moreton in the Marsh and Evesham. This turned out to be a mistake, as passenger number grew over the next few days, double track being restored in 2011 as well as other small station improvements.
