The line to Tunbridge Wells West was constructed by the London Brighton South Coast Railway in 1866 as a means of protecting their territory from the rival South Eastern Railway. The route ran from the Kentish town of Tunbridge Wells for just over 5 miles to the junction at Eridge, Sussex. It was part of a network of secondary lines from Oxted, Tunbridge Wells, Polegate, Lewes and East Grinstead.
After many years of underinvestment British Rail made the decision to close the line on 6th July 1986, the depot lingering on a little while longerto stable DMU’s. This was not the end however, a small heritage group had been set up to preserve the line and, after much effort, began operating trains 21st December 1996.
Groombridge was reached in August 1997 and, after many long discussions with Network Rail, returned to Eridge in March 2011. Most recently the line has become host to the Southern Locomotive Ltd No.. 30453 ‘Sir Keith Park’ and No. 30472 ‘Squadron 257’. There are long term ambitions to restore the run round loop at Eridge and even a new museum inside the old station building at Tunbridge Wells West
