I would have liked it to be tested against the 850 EVO, which is considered superior to the MX300. You are testing a high end NVMe vs a non top performer SATA SSD.
@gamingunboxed5130

That's kind of the point, the MX300 is much cheaper than the 850 Evo and we wanted to show that for most users the MX300 is more than capable.

But who has the money for the 960 EVO also has the money for the 850 EVO, that's why it would have been more interesting imho (I know I'm biased here) to see the top performer SSD vs top perfomer NVMe. Based on your test one would say it's twice as fast but it is actually compared to a slower unit.

I just spend 2 days testing it. And I'm kind of pissed. 850EVO 500GB has exaclty same, sometimes little better performance than 960EVO - loading apps/games/windows boot time. Only reason to get NVMe is for transfering large files/pro work/high QD application. So ... for 99% of users watching this, just get 1TB 850EVO or keep your money for something else. ps: Video si kind of misleading, because ppl will think "Hey, NVMe drives are twice faster in everything, I'll grab one"

Overall I find this comparison to be on point and quite informative, while not being overly so, causing the viewer to lose interest.. Very nicely done! As a side note, the only thing I had issue with was the fact that the "Satir" interface kept being mentioned and I'm not sure I've heard of that interface's existence, but then again I may not be fully abreast of the hottest most recent technological releases that contain this oddly named interface ;)

I can be wrong at times and I always appreciate learning something new, even if I did happen to be wrong! However, I am not wrong when I say the 850EVO is a sure WINNER in every way possible! I think one of the most successful and popular SSD drives ever created, even at this late date. Guess what? I still buy em, and my customers are still rocking them and stoked about the performance and reliability, along with the great price point they come in at! Don't get me wrong the 960Pro is a better drive and if it would work in SATA interfaces at the level it does in PCI-E 3.0 X4 there would be no comparison but it cannot.

Same here. Where I live a 500GB nvme was about the same price than a 1TB sata ssd so I went for the 1TB sata drive (crucial mx300) and I'm not regretting it at all. Best purchase ever, the difference with my previous wd hdd is day and night and I can load all of my games directly from the ssd which is awesome because having a ssd just to use it as a system partition then load your games from a standard hdd won't make a difference in loading times.

Just one more note: What exactly do you mean by a high end computer? Well, actually, I don’t need the answer, because I already know, the hardware of my choice would be more than fast enough to cope with the 960 EVO or Pro. But you should provide your audience with the information, so they can compare.

This is the direction things are going, next year there will be 20TB 3d NAND SSDs on market. This scenario is very similar to the time when DDR2 was no longer manufactured so everyone that wanted to upgrade their computer without rebuilding the whole setup paid a LOT more for the old slow tech. It will be the same with mechanical drives and let me tell you that while they had a role at one time I, for one am VERY GLAD to see them go. Do you know how long it's been since I was concerned with slowly and gently setting my laptop down? I VERY LONG TIME! Most the time I toss it 20' onto my bed or whatever when no concern for data loss. And I'm talking every day here. Never once an issue.

Thanks, this was extremely useful showing real world speeds! 1 thing you proved is that using a HDD as primary boot drive is definitely out. Large HDDs should only be used for long term media/file storage. Once using any SSD you just cant got back to HDD. Now NVMe vs SATA is still a tough cost/performance decision, which you showed nicely in your video. With NVMes coming down in price that might be the way to go unless budget is tight. However SATA/SSDs are also extremely cheap with comparable speeds to NVMe so again, not really easy decision.

Yes, there are several factors invloved but I would love to hear the results if you were to put the 850Evo back in with latest firmware and a fresh install. There is no comparison obviously to the 960Pro and anything close to that level. Even though I make plenty sometimes I'm a lil cheap which I have the feeling you're into that same thought process.. Check out the SM951 (950Pro) and SM961 (960 Pro), even though these do not have the full warranty that the Pro series has they represent the same or very close to the same performance levels with a very much lower cost. And, on top of this mind you that out of the 20 or so of these OEMS I've had and also deployed in client systems there has been 0.00% of dissatisfaction on anyone's part, including my own which says something. The point I'm getting to here is that how I am NOT suggesting to use something other than the SM series due to the overwhelming success and value it represents, I have migrated my own thinking process to where now I am willing to spend hundreds more for a little more performance. If you are using any SATA SSD and do have or don't have a M keyed M.2 slot you should consider the SM series and there are a lot of deals to be had out of the UK on Ebay (where I sourced my first). I would absolutely recommend SM series and NVME beyond all else, and they aren't even a bit close to SATA in terms of performance, while also not breaking the bank. Mind you Samsung Magician will not work on these as they are not consumer level, this has not proven an issue for me and I don't hold back at all when I absolutely recommend the SM series with no reservations. You should also keep in mind that the larger the drive, the more chips and interfaces involved, making the solution more powerful, HOWEVER, I used the 128GB lowest end option for well over a year and was never unhappy! You swap that for a 850EVO and that will make me unsatisfied with a quickness! I think I paid $85 for that one. I benchmarked it a few mins ago before rebuilding with the 960Pro and got right around 2000MB/sec. Sata is No Where Even Close or can ever come close to that. This is why I consider this the new EVO. Who knows? Maybe I should be a hardware review guy? lol have a good night!

Samuel Fowler nvme I will have to wait until it's cheaper. I did want to get the Samsung ssd but went for more GB to install more games. I have noticing opening files on my HDD is slow now when there was no issue on the old PC. Maybe power settings. I'm using ryzen power setting.

i don't think the drive was the bottleneck in civ test, it does alot of calculation there

The machines all did the exact same "alot of calculations" and still the drive was the tiebreaker. Who cares what you "think". since facts already proved otherwise.

Misleading video. Do the comparison between a top performer M.2 SSD (samsung 960 Evo) and a top performer SATA SSD (850 evo). You will see that the difference is very very small.
