As an ex seaman you soon learn you are only a small dot on a mighty ocean no matter what size vessel you may be on

Such a distinctive aft lido deck with those terraces, that we spotted this as Balmoral. This was great to watch.

5.5 meter swells were the biggest I've had on a cruise ship. It's amazing that a 160,000 tonne ship rolls up & down the waves like that. I always feel safe on a cruise ship as I know they are built to handle much worse than that. I remember a captain once said his ship was built to handle a force 10 gale but it was his intention to never test that claim out.

I don't think Balmoral is anywhere near 160,000 tonnes IIRC

Went through the bay of Biscay on the IOTS with 12 mtr swells, not a great intro to cruising but didnt put me off. The Capt said that usually only professional sailors would sail through that. There was a cctv image of one of the ships stabilisers actually out of the water.

Is that terrible ‘elevator music’ playing all the time ? I’d have thoroughly enjoyed the excitement of the storm but that music would have driven me nuts!!!

😆 thankfully not! It was a few seconds of some advert/jingle on the cabin TV. We would all have jumped overboard whatever the weather if it had gone on continuously 😉

@@THX_Tex Balconies always seem like a great idea, but in reality often little used. I take photos from them & on this last trip sat down for all of 2 minutes LOL... so a waste indeed
