Slight spoilers for other Graham McNeill books, but some of these characters made a return in his other books too. If i remember correctly the surviving officer and the Khorne daemon lady made an appearance in the Daemonculaba novel and went through a redemption arc. Hawke made a return in the Mechanicus novel, working in a Mechanicus ship, where no one believed he killed a chaos marine. Some of the chaos marines themselves like Kroeger and Forrix were in the Horus Heresy novels, especially "Angel Exterminatus", and the novel also went through how Honsou was made into a marine, acting sort of as an indirect prequel. Edit: Typo

For the uninitiated: de Vauban was the main man responsible for the fortresses Louis XIV of France had erected in the kingdom, especially in the north east. Many of these fortresses are still standing. Also he was involved in many succesfull sieges. Kind of an amalgamation of Imperial Fists and Iron Warriors.

I had watched a few on Sandhroman’s vids before reading this book, and by great coincidence he put out a video on de Vauban like 2 days after I finished Storm of Iron. Big fan of the book, and I agreed with Shy the most. I really enjoyed its depiction of how far the Iron Warriors have fallen over to Chaos. Too many people build their armies and kitbash their models to have their IW have nothing to do with Chaos. Removing all spikes, mutation, icons, body horror, etc. Storm of Iron had a great balance of showing the attitude of the legions' attitude towards Chaos. It's a means to an end. The legion as a whole is indifferent, but individual Marines can be terribly as corrupted as anyone else.
@slb797
Жыл бұрын
So it is canon (last I checked) that IW tend to be one of the traitor legions with the lowest levels of corruption/mutation (others being Nightlords and Alpha Legion). I remember reading somewhere that there are warbands that revile corruption/mutation to the degree that an individual IW will often cut off a mutating limb. Fans seem to agree, otherwise the theory that Perturabo is not actually a Daemon Primarch but still a Primarch that has his life force constantly draining out of him and so he is in a dreadnought sized armor that functions with a heavy emphasis on life support. Although I think the obliterator virus is said to affect IWs more than anyone so, eh. All that being said, I fully enjoyed this book, one of my favorites. The corruption/mutation irked me a little, but McNeill masterfully handled a highly technical aspect (siegecraft), so I am more than willing to forgive

Honsou's story of his rise to power and utter dickery makes him probably my favourite 40k villain. He stands out from the majority of chaotic villains who seem to exist in a vacuum and only for the sake of being "Evil McBadmans" for the protagonist to defeat, like how do most of those guys even survive that long let alone get into positions of power? If you want to know more about Forrix and Kroger they are main IV Legion characters in the 30k novels with Forrix having to deal with not just Perturabo's temper tantrums but the general arseholery of his "fellow" members of the Trident. Kroger is initially kind of a dickish everyman in that he'll gladly leave other Iron Warriors to die if it means that its not him dying but when he gets put forward for command he doesn't understand why Perty would want a rando line trooper as an advisor.

Honestly, I prefer Angel Exterminatus to Storm of Iron. Goodreads disagrees with me, but yeah, I liked the more character-driven stories. But I really liked that even though Honsou's the MC and everyone's shitting on him because racism, he also is in a position to learn from his superiors - thinking in the vein of his interaction with Forrix's engineer. That and the genuine moment of wholesome brotherhood with Honsou and Forrix was my favourite moments. Also, alot of the IW attitude about chaos is sorta a consequence of it being early 2000s CSM.

Highly recommend that as a read at some point and although it is the 3rd book in the Ventris chronicles you don’t really need to read the first two but it is obviously recommended Also Shy love the jab at Passinius for Honshou taking his arm but then Honshou got bodied by Uriel ;) UM FTW

Re: Bricky and DK's differences in book type preferences: it boils down preferring character driven or plot driven writing. Books have to have development on both sides, but can favor one over the other. If you ever hear about people talking about girl and boy books in kidlit, that's a simplistic, stereotypical way to describe this (from experience working as a young adult library assistant, parents still describe books this way, which was annoying as a woman who always preferred supposed boy aka plot driven books). Both general writing styles and people's tastes are valid, so I'm glad that Bricky and DK can discuss a book like this that skews one way the way they did.

I had a gist of what happened in Storm of Iron, and I was not surprised of whatever new things I learned from this video. Still sad that Forrix died since I read the Horus Heresy novels, and then there's Kroeger dying which does not really affect me other than Khorne being bored of Kroeger for not being Khorne enough. Still don't care about Honsou, how the writers want to prop him up like they do with Abaddon just conforms why I don't like him. And of course, I don't plan on reading/listening to the book because of its age, and where most of the ideas people have for 40k Iron Warriors are translated to 30k Iron Warriors almost seamlessly. Inconsistencies in books really affects future ones, so I try not to think about older books most of the time.
