YEEOW!! Reminds me of the GG Bridge 50yr Anniversary Walk, where @ 6:00AM, all traffic was halted & people invited to walk on all lanes/sidewalks of bridge from both sides to meet in the middle where a small stage was set up for a celebration. At the middle, the crush of people was so tremendous, folks felt panicky. We were soon instructed by Authorities to calmly turn round & return from whence we came. It was a very scary slow crawl, and we could see the support cables beginning to vibrate, which was proven if you touched the vibrating cable. When I safely got off the bridge (Bridge Authorities with bullhorns) & on the beach near Fort Point where a Festival was underway…folks sitting on beach blankets who witnessed the Bridge Walk from the beach, were saying that the natural humping upward curve of the bridge had flattened out when the walkers met in the middle!

Not only have their “improvements “ messed with the integrity of the bridge by triggering harmonic stress, they are no longer maintaining it as assiduously as before. There was always a painting crew on one end of the bridge or the other, for the years I commuted to work from Marin. Last time I crossed the bridge; actually first time after COVID lockdowns, I noticed there were no maintenance crews on the bridge; there is a spreading rust stain on the north tower, and all of the bridge’s paint is heavily oxidized. Something is going to give.

@@mudemmeonick You're totally missing the plot. "Improving" means "breaking something that works and replacing it with something more expensive" - it's to keep the economy moving. We are neck deep in debt inherited from the 80s, we literally have to find ways to "make" money - or rather move it around - or the system is going to fold in on itself. Look up the debt trap. I developed a phobia of bridges after a harrowing experience one stormy night. I was driving a VW bus across the Bay Bridge to pick up friends at SFO. Once on the bridge I had to follow through, even though rain was coming down in buckets and the wind was blowing with enormous force. The VW bus was being blown out of the lane. It was really difficult to keep it from drifting because all the play in the steering wheel. I thought I would crash into the guard rail for sure. What if I broke through and fell to my death? I managed but it took a big psychological toll.

Aerodynamics issue. There were some panels added to improve (decrease) the aerodynamic cross-section of the bridge deck, which would reduce the lateral structural loads. They've worked, but nobody caught this nasty noise it produces during design and testing. A lot of commenters here seem to think that "whistling noise" == "magic harmonics that destroy steel." It's literally JUST a whistling noise. There's nothing there that's a threat to the integrity of the structure because that's literally not how noises work.
