Can’t beat an evening watching the ships come and go with weather crossing the lake on the horizon! After a couple weeks of feeling a bit dead due to continuous wind storms and other factors, Duluth Harbor came roaring back last night! Two ships through the canal, two arriving at anchor and one just over the horizon, it was a busy evening! Add in a sizable number of spectators and some smelt fishers on the South Pier and it made for a very fun time, despite a bitter cold breeze.
First, the saltie Jamno arrived and anchored in the background to wait out the weekend for the Superior CHS grain dock to open up and take a well deserved rest after several weeks of continuous sailing. A half hour later the 740ft Canadian laker Algoma Niagara started moving towards the canal with her cargo of salt after waiting out some earlier winds. 10 minutes later, the thousand foot long American Integrity, which had been loading at the coal dock departed and started for the canal as well. The Niagara waited for them outside the harbor before coming in (without a salute 🫤) A fourth vessel, (and the second saltie) Jessica B, emerged from the storm in the background while filming this, sailing around Jamno and anchoring close to the canal to wait out the weekend as well, and will come in early this week to load at Duluth’s Riverland Ag dock at the conclusion of the video you can see the pilot boat Sea Bear sailing out to meet them. And just over the horizon, arriving about an hour and a half after the conclusion of this video was a fifth vessel, Great Lakes Trader, which sailed to the ore dock to load. Arthur M Anderson also arrived several hours later in the dead of night with limestone. Plenty more ships are also on the schedule!
Enjoyed meeting some fans of the channel as well!!
