If you ended up in the hospital today, who takes care of your pets?
When this happened to a local resident named Carol*, her three cats been left behind at home in crates with no one to care for them for over a week. Thankfully, her caseworker contacted our Department of Animal Protection, who received permission to enter her home, liberate the cats, and bring them to the ARL.
However, retrieving these cats quickly became a challenge when we discovered Carol had been collecting items for quite some time that were piled to the ceiling of her home, making her animals extremely difficult to locate.
After a difficult and exhaustive search with the help of the Reading Fire Department, all three cats were discovered to be alive and responsive in their crates! Thanks to our Animal Protection team, Carol could continue to recover during her time in the hospital knowing both her and the cats were supported and safe, while also receiving the help she needed through our partnering social service agencies.
The Animal Rescue League of Berks County extends our sincere gratitude to the Reading Fire Department, Reading Hospital employees, and partnering social service agencies for their collaboration in aiding Carol and her cats.
