Leaving the air on for the pets and the well hidden bathroom with shower just sold me. This is the first van that checks all my boxes. I thought this van stole the show at the Super B in Phoenix last March. It has so much innovation and unique use of space on a 144 chassis. Many more pros than cons when considering fulltiming to parts less traveled which I hope to do soon. It is expensive but pretty close to what I would custom build and that would cost much more. Plus you have a great company standing behind it! Thanks for the great video and I'm glad you spent some time in it so you could show off all the great stuff.

These Storyteller vans have grown on me. I didn't care for the complicated shower and porta-potti at first, but I've come to appreciate the space efficiency of it all. Also, the battery/inverter capacities are excellent, although I'd eliminate the roof platform and add maximum solar as well. Total no-compromise off-grid capability is the top priority for me. I still don't know if this would work for me personally, as I think I want a 170 for a bit more space and comfort, but this is definitely a well thought out design and it appears to be well built. Awesome battery power and it’s so great to be able to power the AC! But a 72 inch bed? And not even 3 cubic foot fridge? I’d leave my mountain bike at home in exchange for making those bigger. Cool shower but how convenient is it to be moving the porta potty around constantly during the day? I’ll wager it stays out of the storage cabinet most of the time. First off - thank you for the great video It was easy to understand and you took your time explaining everything perfectly I can only imagine how tough it is to make one... I have a great many questions and you can either answer me on this thread or I will provide my email at the end of this comment and you may answer me that way as well; #1 How wide is the space stepping up into the Van, does the cabinet with the fridge in it make it too narrow? #2 How deep is the fridge and what model is it - how wide is it across the face is it DC? #3 Where is the fresh water tank and how big is it? #4 How big is the grey water tank and where is it stored? #5 How much space does the Volta system take up and do you have pictures of it- does the cover come off the side wall to expose the Volta system and how do you service it? #6 I know it's the 4 X 4 version but what size tires and what tread pattern on them? #7 Was the suspension system upgraded and is there a lift kit in the suspension system? #8 Does it have a leveling feature in the suspension system? #9 What is the exact finished head room and is that the original headliner that Mercedes offers or did they make it special? #10 how wide and how high are the hanging cabinets - they seem bigger that standard 12" high and wide Van hanging cabinets? #11 It seems like it would be easy to hit your head if sitting up in bed quickly without remembering that there are overhead cabinets - is that something that happens a lot? #12 That shower system - is it something that is really worth it and is it expensive what are the dimensions of it? #13 Would you sometimes rather have a dedicated shower in the Van - especially for the extra storage space when not in use? #14 What is the exact insulation used and did they ever consider using a product called, 'Phase Change' - have you heard of it? #15 Why do you have so little solar on the roof wouldn't you want more? #16 How big is the AC unit and what make is it - is it DC? #17 What type of flooring is it and how thick is it and how is it insulated and did you consider radiant floor heat? #18 What type of water and air heater and are they combined or separate units and how many BTU's? #19 Does the water and air heater run off the diesel? Thanks and sorry for all the questions - Pete petescarpa@yahoo.com

@BillFerris
4 жыл бұрын
My guess is, they would choose the Mode...not because there's more to dislike about the Aktiv but because there's more to like, today, about the Mode. The Aktiv was a perfect fit for them at that time in their lives but the Mode is a better fit with who they are, today. The battery system, fresh and grey water tanks make boondocking for longer periods of time a possibility. While having a shower and toilet are great conveniences, they're not in a permanent, hard-sided enclosure. This gives the Mode a more open feel. It also seems a more versatile space for a wider range of working and living modes. The clearance and 4WD allow one to explore rougher terrain. The Aktiv was a great fit for who they were. It whet their appetite for a more adventurous van life. The Mode is the better fit for their current needs and interests...who they are, today.

The Storyteller - it's checks more boxes for us. The battery system is amazing...1000ah of lithium compared to the 400 we had in the Hymer. @myroadtours6147

Yes but it comes with lithium batteries and a second alternator. That alone is a huge plus vs other similar class setups. The solar system can also easily be up graded to 600wts...it has plug and play electrical ports on the roof. You could switch out the 45's for 2 x 115 w panels for example making it 230wts and have room for other things. I'm still debating what direction I go but if I do go with a Storyteller, I would install a couple 190's on a pneumatic tilt system. Then tilt them towards the horizon so they top off the batteries as I watch the sunset from the beach.

I have done my research on the Revel, Earth Cruiser and ATW-warrior, and the Revel 2020 can be purchased for $110,000 as my neighbor just bought his:) I get to press the sliding door button ..love it! The MSRP was 180,000. This seems to be a duplicate of that vehicle with a few great improvements like the Volta system, stow away shower and hidden toilet-porta potty, i did find the bed was placed three feet two high, the rest was like the REVEL- which is not a bad thing at all, however, the price should come in at 90,000 USD, and im sure it will, he Revel was selling for MSRP originally when they were hard to find NOW the dealers are selling them for 110,00 ALL DAY LONG! I liked the front bumper bull guard that clears the front radar and sonic sensors:) I can see he RVEL copy the stow away toilet/shower idea and add the VOLTA system shortly as the AC does not work without a generator etc.......off grid and THAT my friends is actually surprising for a $180,000 MSRP in my opinion and NO hard surface counter top.............WHAT????????????????
@Weretherussos
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michael - the price on the MSRP of the Mode is just over $200k so the $150k price tag is what it would cost you at the dealer. The big difference here is the Volta system as you state and the cost for the Volta is almost the entire price difference between the Revel and this. If you’re serious about buying the Revel, I’d suggest spending some time in a Mode because it’s hard to see the build quality of each in a video. Plus you can see which one fits you better.

Great review Joe and Kait. You guys keep getting better with experience. I have a few questions if I may impose: Is there an external electric connection for charging when at a campground? I have a Volta System now and the inverter has quite a large parasitic load. Does the Espar have an electric mode for heat and hot water like the Revel? Are there effective screens for the slider and rear doors? Is there an overhead storage shelf above the driver/passenger seat? Does Storyteller still plan to offer a Transit with Quigley 4x4? I've read that the AWD Transit has the same ground clearance as their 2 wheel drive. Thank you for the information and a great review.

Hey Dick - thank you. Yes there is a shore power outlet and cord so you can plug in. We have spent about 4 months in total in a Storyteller and never needed it. Does the 12 Volt system have the auto start on the engine if it falls below a certain point. I thought that was a great system on the Hymer. Didn't have to worry about the AC running the battery down if you had the pup locked in the van on a hot day. I know it is a huge storage in the batteries but how long will it run the AC. As you may remember, I am not a fan of Mercedes, but I have to admit, this unit is interesting.
@Weretherussos
4 жыл бұрын
My understanding in talking to the folks at Storyteller is that they aren’t able to offer an auto start. Apparently it would either void the warranty or it’s not a modification Mercedes allows builder who are Master Upfitters to install. On a full charge, we could run the AC about 6-8 hours. I like the auto start feature but I’d never leave a pup that long in the van on a hot day regardless of the AC.

I am kind of surprised at how little the bump-outs actually add to the width of the van for the bed area. The Sprinter is 70" (1.78m) normally, but with the bump-outs it's only 72" (1.82m)? I know that every inch counts in a small space, but I'm 72.8" tall (1.85m), which is not overly tall, but even with the bump-outs, I still wouldn't fit. I thought those bump-outs would've added a bit more width, like 74" (1.90m).

Also, as I already mentioned, you're not getting anywhere near the level of electronics in a Revel that you get in the Storyteller. In my opinion, a small custom builder is the best way to go for a van in this price range. You'll likely get far better electronics and far better build quality. I wouldn't even consider a Revel over this.

I looked at one at a RV dealer in Missouri they completely ignored me because I guess they thought I couldn't afford it. They made me feel horrible. I LOVE that van but even if I could afford it I would find something else just because of the way I was treated.

Using the toilette seems to be a serious issue if you have a few people present in the van? Any comments on that?

Yeah, ask them to step outside. After a while of being in vans, we simply go in front of each other. There’s no privacy in a space that small.

So excited to see another possibility in our search for vans. Wondering if they are building on the new ford awd chassis? I love their work but are pretty sold on the ford after test driving one. Can’t wait to see what you guys are driving next.

@ScubaSteveCanada

Being an owner of a Ford Transit Class B, Ford better do something to improve the ground clearance. I had the chassis lifted to get all the important tanks further up and improve entrance/exit angles ... this has definitely helped but a lift doesn't improve ground clearance. The big problem is the rear suspension mounts, transmission and spare tire. Other than these, the Ford Transit (3.5 L EcoBoost) is powerful, good fuel economy and comfortable. I used to have a Ford 6.8l V10 Class B RV and the Transit is much better.

Hey guys. Just a correction. You get your kW and kWh mixed up....Battery capacity is measured in kWh not kW.......also you used text to mention your inverter is 3.6kWh......this is also wrong but the other way around.....inverter power output rating is expressed in kW..........it is actually an important difference.
