I’ve been working a little mantra lately, which is that anytime my brain feels hectic I think to myself “be satisfied”. I feel like being satisfied and satisfiable is a practice, and that it is a practice that is actively discouraged by consumer culture, hustle culture, and maybe even modern culture in general. Add to that the perfectionism of being considered a “high achiever” in certain things and whew. What a cocktail. So, that’s my practice right now. “Be satisfied”. Do you have holes in your wardrobe or are you just highly trained to look for the next more perfect version, find the next gap, or look for the next better thing? Do we maybe just have not a lot of practice saying “well done, take a rest now” to ourselves in any part of our life?

This is beautiful! I hate to ruin it but it does also remind me of the Snickers candy bar ad campaign where the saying was "Snickers...Satisfies"...the insidious power of marketing. But I think you are also spot on about how we are highly trained to look for the "more perfect", or to "fill any gaps" etc...both in our own sense of human value (being productive, etc) as well as regarding everything that's available for purchase (our wardrobes, makeup collections, etc)...and to be truly free is to practice being satisfied with where we are and what we have.

one idea that comes to mind (regularly) is that it could be an option for you to only buy clothes in store going forward. sure, it’s inconvenient to shop in-store when you live in a suburbian area, but maybe that’s the point. even if you have to, I don’t know, drive all the way to chicago for it, and you sure have a lot on your plate and not much free time to do that - maybe that’s actually so neat. tibi jeans or whatever haunts your imagination then is not an emergency, so once you have that time you can go, see it, touch it, try it on, think about it. you may even end up buying this *something* online, why not, but only after trying it on in person. this way you’ll have to really really want something, otherwise not worth the trouble, isn’t it?

I have actually thought about this as well! And funny you mention driving to Chicago because that exact scenario had crossed my mind as well, where I was thinking about how I could try the tibi jeans in person and whether I'd think it was "worth" having a city trip to do so... also how it might be fun and much more memorable doing it that way if it was a possibility. Which, it probably wouldn't be a possibility for awhile, but maybe that's also okay...it is also a reminder that I truly don't "need" anything and adding a new pair of jeans to my wardrobe will probably be just as "fun" in 2-3 years as it is today (or if I decide by then I don't need them, that's also great!)

I do know that people told you, that they are not appreciating that they saw your purses. In my opinion, you made a decision about what is suiting you and you thought about the fact it would help you to keep you focus on enjoying what you already got. I do believe that it´s not easy to deal with comments. In my own opinion, I did prefer when you focused on what is best for you and share your thoughts. Exactly for that I keep watching your videos. Don´t let comments influence you to much, where you get to overthinking what you are sharing with us. You started because you got influenced online to buy stuff. Don´t be influenced from comments to overthink what is going on. There is a high chance other people exactly do like your content because you want to get away from beeing influenced from everything in a way which is changing you into a person you don´t want to be. I would be very happy, when you focus on your own journey and how you think through to ideas and concepts, without letting effect other people opinions, None of the people which watch the videos are walking in your shoes. None of them should judge or suggest to much. It´s your progress and your journey. There are people out here, which do enjoy seeing that. Period. It´s very interesting to see your journey. I am happy that somebody is so open with talking through stuff. It´s giving me some vibe of "having girl talks". Toward the end of Mitch Albom's Have a Little Faith, a terminally ill man walks around his space, admiring some of his belongings and their memories. The narrator, assigned to write his eulogy, describes this scene as how he imagines someone would 'pack to go to heaven:' "touching everything, and taking nothing." THIS was my aha moment. Nothing truly struck me with such urgency to STOP seeking out things to want and ways to dispose of my income in the most aesthetically pleasing way. It took me years but that book and this KZitem channel finally made it click for me.

You ask if the colours suit you. Do you like them? Does having clothes in those colours make you happy? Then they suit you. I wish I’d never had my colours done. Trying four different pink scarves on and then realising that one’s looks better. Oh, I’m a winter! Please…don’t. It’s just another way of judging ourselves rather than enjoying ourselves. My lightbulb moment was buying an orange top because it was fun, though it wasn’t in my colours and doesn’t ‘suit’ me. But it’s fun and I like it…so it suits me, even if no fashion icon would agree! Keep the analogies coming! 😀And yes, whenever I feel the urge to "upgrade" my wardrobe or style, I have to pause and honestly ask myself why I feel so drawn to browsing the webshops and looking at the stylevideos - yet feel so much resistance towards actually acquainting myself with the pieces in my wardrobe that I already collected. Like you said, shopping is the easiest pathway - and "doing the work" is hard. I hope I can keep reminding myself that "shopping" will take me further away from my goals by emptying my wallet and muddling up my collection. Funnily enough I have noticed that the things I enjoyed wearing as a child and young adult (check pattern, short cardigans, shorter skirts and dark trousers) are still the pieces that I feel most comfortable in and have been repurchasing in different versions all troughout my life. Why did I even need the experimental phases to begin with!? 😢😀

A perspective… when I was able to get “the best of the best” of something. Regardless if the price seems unreasonable at the time, it really changed me. I stopped over-consuming, because most of my desire was for that quality, design and dream so buying a “lower” item based on pricing left me unsatisfied and constantly looking to upgrade. Buying the Chanel (Vintage) bag of my dreams, has naturally made me not think of that category any more, and therefore prevented me from buying probably dozens of other lesser (in my heart and mind) bags. I have Nothing to covet or upgrade to and still have that special feeling when using the one.

I love admiring people who can pull together a great look. Earlier this year I did plan a wardrobe overhaul due to some skin issues. I couldn’t afford to buy everything all at once so I laid out a budget for each season (well the two seasons we have here in Texas 😂) I did plan for some seasonal purchases (I.e. sweaters for when it gets cooler) and now that the fall clothes are out, I do find myself excited to shop. And the need to upgrade is strong. I am doing my best to restrain myself to only buy a reasonable amount of functional pieces and perhaps reducing my initial budget for these purchases. Some unexpected expenses have come up so I need to be sure of the pieces I choose so that I don’t waste any money. And of course, I would like to have clothes of good quality so that they last longer. I wish I could say I won’t buy fast fashion, but I know that I will probably buy from places like American Eagle. However, I will be making sure to buy pieces made of mostly cotton so hopefully those clothes last longer than a typical fast fashion piece. And the plan is after this year to be done with clothes for awhile!

The olive suits you! I think we’re on the same color scheme (I wear black, blue and dark violet, some red but pastels, turquoise and yellow don’t work for me. I wear dark blue or violet for more elegant or formal events but with olive and burgundy I am more grounded and down to earth. The colors display how I feel or want to feel. Astonishing I somehow got back to the style of my childhood. And I mean favorite colors and styles of my kindergarten and elementary school time. Of course the fits are more of when I was 15/16 but I often remember my favorite clothes from my childhood and in some way they’re very similar to what I wear now. I also have old H&M shirts older than a decade. They really had good quality when I was a teenager! I would certainly buy them on a flea market again. I think my wardrobe is complete as long as I don’t get problems with laundry and don’t feel weird on special occasions wearing what I have. Sometimes I am looking forward to a needed purchase - for example my longsleeves are mostly old hand-me-downs and I admit I only love about half of them - but they work for me, so I wait until I really need a new one. When my kids were very small I thought I would need another one sooner but as I am not covered in milk every second day anymore they’re enough again. But most of the time it’s like with your shirt: I love my clothes and repair them and am really disappointed when they become unwearable.

This journey through your style history is so interesting. As a serial overbuyer and declutterer, it has never occurred to me to think about this for myself except in the most superficial way. Nine years ago I had bariatric surgery, then beginning in 2021, a series of skin removal surgeries. After that, in this new body, my experimentation and overbuying began and I haven't been able to put much of a dent in it despite several low/no-buy attempts. At least now, I am (mostly) beyond the experimentation stage and have settled on my style. Now I need to convince myself that I have enough. I admire you for putting yourself out there. I couldn't do it myself but I often think that the public accountability might be the only way to really defeat the overbuying habit.

Thank you for sharing your story - I also had many low/no-buy attempts before this year, and as you may have seen, my "no buy" has not been a total "success". But I have done more self-reflection than ever before this time, and I have growing confidence that I CAN do a "no buy" period and be successful next time I might try to do so - I may even continue into next year for a bit, or do another year entirely (but actually successfull?) it remains to be seen. I'm also thinking a lot about how to implement a successful no buy, for those who don't want to share for public accountability. I also tried sharing once before too, in 2020, and quickly fell off the wagon there as well (I just filmed a video about why my previous attempts failed!) and I hope that by the end of this year I may have some better (and actionable!) advice for those who want to try a no buy...I'm also thinking of ways to have a slightly more private accountability community as well if there are people who want to share smaller snippets of reflection, with the ability to stay more anonymous. But it may be a long-term project...

I am trying to figure out how to tackle this after my no buy ends couple of ideas so far: 1) only buy replacements I.e. jeans have broken so time to invest in a new pair 2) have a cap of items I can buy each year maybe 6 which averages 1 every 2 months 3) continue to limit social media and no wish lists so that I TRY to find things organically that allign with my personal style 4) have a yearly budget for example a max amount I would like to spend of fashion in a year e.g. £600 that means if I bought a £200 pair of jeans I only have £400 left. I have also seen that some people make there budget by selling clothes then that becomes are new shopping budget (this does assume you have decent quality expensive clothes you don't want though) 5) for my child continue to shop second hand whenever possible and only get enough clothes that I need for him I.e. just get 2 pairs of joggers if they wear out then get some more. To avoid overbuying clothes he won't use before he is in the next size. Just some ideas I am thinking about

This sounds all very reasonable to me. I do it similarly. I'm not influenced that easily and am not on social media that much. Staying away from this surely helps. Replacements, real wardrobe holes and also some things I want, if its in my budget.

Yes yes yes. All of this sounds great. It's also a mixture of "principles" vs. "arbitrary challenges" - and by this I mean the "replacements only", "no wishlists/limited media", and "shopping secondhand" are principle-based, can be applied as a blanket rule...and the yearly item count and budget are kind of "challenge" items where the numbers are really up to you and your idea of value. I'm attracted to both kinds of "rules" or ideas, and also the thought behind how many items/how much budget is also super interesting to me. I'll likely do something very similar to all of this next year!

How much is enough? Such a profound & haunting question. I ask it of myself everyday with respect to something. Then I end up cerebrally spiralling...Do I really need it? What is the criteria for need? What is my criteria for need? If I can do without, will it impact someone else in a positive way? Will it enhance my life? My family's life? Will it become a burden? 😵💫 I don't want to leave my kids/loved ones a huge headache/heartache of a house full of stuff when I die. Come to think of it, I don't even want to have to manage a bunch of stuff right now that I don't love or use or even remember that I own. It feels really good to have space in the house. Of course I still battle with a couple of compulsive consumption 'collections'... omg. Anyone else unable to enter a bookshop w/o purchasing a 'must-have'?!🙄😬🙂 ...but I digress... In this North American culture of Ayn Randian fierce individualism, the query of 'How much is enough?' & consequently the answers are personal. Even if we were conditionned to be more socially conscientious, hopefully we would also be more compassionate. Being judged sucks. Feeling judged sucks. Being a judgy person is small-minded & indicative of deep, unresolved, and usually unacknowledged, insecurities. So being a judgy person sucks too. In terms of clothing: 1. Post menopausal my size has stopped fluctuating so I don't need to store the range of clothes (5 sizes) I needed over the last 30 or so years. Yay! 2. Despite continually decluttering I still have WAY more clothes than I 'need'. However, they all fit me and I really like 90% of them. The remainder are too useful or 'expensive' for me to declutter just yet. 3. I have a practical & easily manageable system for decluttering my clothes. Mostly I consign them & let the consignment shop donate the 'rejects'. I love your style. Keep on keeping on ❤

No buys seem very useful tools to limit the incoming things. I've been wondering about the idea of decluttering for the sake of having less and evaluating how often I use things. TBH I begin to think I should NOT focus on decluttering. If an item can really be useful to someone I know then I can pass it on. Or sell sth if I feel there's a need. This outflow of stuff - getting rid of things in order to be minimal does not seem mindful to me. I think I can make use of all things I have in a perspective of years. And in odd cases things can go to someone who needs them. So I think I need to make not buying my first focus and using things I have the next one. Thank You Alexa for sharing Your journey.

Loving your videos recently! You allude to this, but I think it really is so damaging how this consumerism can also encourage unrealistic lifestyle creep. I have a career job, so feel I should wear ethical brands. But, I'm also low income since my partner is off work. Even used, brands like Sezane (which I think are more green washing) are out of budget. But because of the KZitemrs 8 watch it feels like it should be in budget and realistic. But in real life, I can't afford more than $50 of spending and it's a huge adjustment after having been more financially stable in the past.

Yes 100% have felt this, and have seen my own concept of what's "worth it" creeping up and up in price as I've seen more of this content. It's been hard to pin down because I've also been getting older and making more money (for some of the years, not anymore!) so I could kind of tell myself I was just "growing into" more expensive clothing tastes...but I think I started the "no buy" just in time to not get into big financial trouble as far as getting into debt. Going forward I'm definitely going to be sticking to a budget based on my actual income, and since I finally feel like I have "enough" stuff, especially clothes, the goal is also to bring in a very limited number of items going forward too.

lol we have been watching the same style youtubers. Do you think it is possible for a style content creator to not influence others to buy more clothes/accessories?

This is a loaded question in my opinion! On one hand if a viewer is very savvy to influence (or not being influenced) then they might be immune to influence from a content creator. On the side of the creator I do think it becomes nebulous as soon as paid content is brought on board - because that's direct advertising/influence. Otherwise, when an influencer is bringing in "new" clothes that are available for purchase, I still think influence can happen if the creator focuses on how great the specific items are - which is often the case with "trends". It's about how this new thing is so great. But if the creator is focusing on the aspects or the overall vibe of the pieces, maybe it's more encouraging of replicating those aspects with one's own wardrobe! It's possible that down the road (perhaps even next year) I might dip my own toes into "style content" that examines the aspects/vibes of certain pairings - but my goal is to do that without adding anything new, even after the "no buy year".

I feel like buying the 500 usd jeans would bring you stress. If 500 usd is a lot of money to you then the jeans would be a precious item for you. Jeans get stained when you have little children.. it would bring stress and suffering to your life if you wore them often, justifying the price tag as a very used item. And worn just once a month when going out without children ( I have 2 little ones and go out without them to a place worth spending time thinking about my outfit maybe once every 2 months?? ), you might feel guilty for buying them.. I feel like maybe it would be better to abandon the obsession of finding the perfect pair of jeans and instead settle for a pair of jeans that fit you well enough and that you don’t consider precious. We all just need to STOP putting so much value and thought on this perishable items and on these unattainable goals of the “perfect *instert clothing staple*”.

This is a great point! I'll have to think about whether or not I'd love them as much in a used and stained version, and/or if they'd still be worth the money (which is a lot for me, but could be reasonable if I consider it within a yearly "extras" budget) if I didn't wear them as much. I think I envision them as a "workwear staple" - but at the same time, I already have both jeans and work-pants and I know I don't "need" to add anything else, however, the feeling I have is that because these jeans (and my other tibi pair that I already own) are kind of a cross between jeans and "interesting pants" because of the shapes, they'd kind of hit that sweet spot in the middle of the formality level between casual jeans and trousers. I'll have to evaluate this honestly after tracking what I actually wear this season at work. Thanks so much for this!
