The 1st time I heard Roy was on a 1972 New Port album "The Jimmy Smith Jam" and I was immediately carried away. To the ear that was used to rock drummers, his drumming sounded intriguing; polyrythmic and even melodic with tons of groove. I have his 30 yrs later album "Fountain of Youth" (2002) which he recorded when he was 76. His play makes me forget his age. The album title is spot on. He's been my fav drummer for 30 odd yrs but tha't only about half of his career. Mind boggling longevity!

man these guys are still killin' it! how many years after Now He Sings, Now He Sobs was recorded?!?! when and where was this video recorded?
This trio put on one of the best live performances of music I’ve ever witnessed in the early to mid 80’s around the time of their ECM double release that featured one album of Monk tunes and another with spontaneous improvisation.
