You might want to keep this one in mind too: In the trunk, behind the carpeting, down low behind the wheel-well is a relief vent. It is a back-draft type with several blades. These make a chattery rattle. Pound near it; you'll hear the sound. I took mine out, and taped over the opening to prevent water from coming in. I left a break so air pressure from closing doors had the intended relief. I believe I have less noise, but I still have not tightened all rattles all up (plastic bumper, rear spoiler, trunk latch etc...) I've found that as you quiet some, you'll reveal others; but it is less and less. Thanks for the heads-up.

Thank You!, I've been racking my brain trying to figure out the clanking sound from my rear end. I thought it was the strut mount as well, after watching this vid, I checked and sure enough. Thanks for posting this helpful video. Thumps up!

@zach9802 They used to be some of the most amazingly consistent and brilliantly engineered vehicles made. No doubt the the control modules, alternators, AC compressors, fuel pumps, starters, and turn signal switches failed just like clock work between 120K - 150K. The incredibly remarkable thing is that they did and were supposed to so you would buy a new GM product. If you can't sell new cars you go out of business right? So certain parts did fail. Perfectly and right on schedule.

That helped a lot! Chevy dealership in Delano, Mn told me it was the spare tire that was lose in my trunk!!! But I have a question, we bought this car used 2017, bought it in 2018 I read everything to set the settings of the seats. Nothing works. So every time before getting out I have to hit the #1 on the door so the seat stays in place. I've asked the dealership to help.

@briansmobile1 Then Honda and more specifically Toyota came onto the scene and broke the rules of reliability and fitness for use with radical concepts like six sigma and just in time inventory and employee control of manufacturing in real time. Though the bodies would rust out and become a vehicular eye sore they would still get the job done. Americans LOVE the get'r done philosophy. Reliability and efficiency won the day, the market, and the hearts of responsible car and truck buyers.

Jeez, I wish I was surprised that Chevy used tin foil to make that sway bar. My girlfriend's 2007 Chevy Equinox is making a really bad thumping sound too, even after replacing the front control arms, bushings, stabilizer links and rear shocks. I thought all the noises would have gone away but I'm definitely hearing one from the driver's side rear end. Maybe this is what is going on, gonna have to check it out in a bit here. Great video, thanks!

Wonder if this is the same thing going on with my 07. Had a mechanic from the GM Milford proving grounds tell me it was a worn shock bushing and to replace the shocks. Well replaced the shock and wouldn't you know it.......still clunking from the back end. Don't find much that GM has had KZitem remove the videos of the 04-07 body style. There was a lot on the power steering problem that most of us are having. Front suspension and steering column has been replaced several times over. Michigan roads are hell on suspensions!!!

I have a 06 SS Malibu and this noise started about year 2. Dealer could never figure it out and since my wife drives it she doesn't really care :). I was ANNOYED to say the least. The noise is coming from the gas fill pipe. Look at the body pan on that side from underneath the vehicle. You will see the pipe coming down from the opening behind the little plastic splash shield. At the body panel it turns 90 degrees heading to the tank. Rate at that bend you will see how they have it anchored to the pan. It has a metal tab with 1 mounting bolt. Tap on the pipe and it easily hits the body pan and makes that annoying cluck noise. The metal tab sags over time. Take a few wire ties and strap them around the pipe in a way so the slide lock is between the pipe and the pan so it can no longer come in contact with the pan when it moves. . Tonight I decided to search it again and watched the video and my SS does not have this type of swaybar. SS has swing bars and stabs/links, sport suspension. I decided to crawl under again and grabbing and prying on susp parts and my pry bar accidently bumped the pipe and BINGO problem solved.

Ryan Jerisk Thanks. I'll have to check that out in the morning. When I had it down to the shop on the lift. You could really tell she was showing her mileage from all the play that is in all the bushings. Front and rear. I need to replace the front end-links ( 3rd set) and factory's rear. Bushings are going on all 4 lower control arms. There are 2 other arms on the rear ( not sure if they would be called a swing arm or not ) that the bushings show play in also. Our Michigan roads in no better words deserve the title they hold. Worst roads in the country. I don't doubt that for a second.

hi, i have a chevy malibu 1997, and it's making same kind of noise. But mine comes from the front left wheel; especially when I press the brake. I think it is getting worse too. Now I went to a mechanic, he said That i have to replace the "left lower control arm , both outer tie rod ends and align front end." For total of 500, hey i spent too much money in that car already. Besides because im a woman, they keep over charged me. Now, im wondering, if my car has the problem as this one, plz help!

I have a Impala 2011. It will occasionally make bumping/clunking sound from the rear end when just accelerating. Not even necessarily going over a bump. It hasn't been a reliable car. It has had many other problems as well. After 60k miles, the transmission went out. That was around 5k to fix. It also has a _service stabilitrak, service ABS, service traction control_ error now as well. I have replaced the rack twice, because it was leaking power steering fluid. I'm still owing 2 more years of payments on it. So I've already put way more money into the car than its worth. I absolutely hate my car.
