One of the most violent records I've ever listened to..absolute masterpiece!

Absolutely. Apart from the heaviness and intensity, the amount of detail is scary. A benchmark for subsequent masterworks.
@WeWantYouToStay

+Harpoenter couldn't agree more! Devins attention to detail and use of samples is terrifying. That distorted scream sample during the bridge of home nucleonics (the basically death metal part) has always made me feel uneasy, not to mention Devins truly demonic vocals spewing such visceral hatred towards mankind.

The most scary intense live band you could possibly see in 1997. Words are irrelevant to try describing the totally insane display of violence and madness Devin could throw at your miserable self back then. Also Gene, Jed and Byron were tighter than the tightest rythmic section available in the metal scene.

It was fun to watch them play 2 sets. First was SYL. Then came his solo stuff. Was great watching Earth Day being played by these guys. That was in the 90s in Australia.

I discovered SYL through the Brave Words and Bloody Knuckles magazine that was sold through HMV, back in 95 when they were just starting out. Each magazine would have a free CD that had a compilation of bands on it. I really wish I had kept it.

He (Devin Townsend) was mostly just angry at the world and himself during the recording of this album, especially because of extensive drug use. Whereas Ocean Machine was his light side, this was his dark side. The bipolar stuff came after this but he's long been fine since.

I've been a DT fan for a LONG time, but this album does kinda borrow heavily from Ministry. Devy ups the "melodic" content and throws a bunch of curveballs, but the drums and guitars are right out of the Al Jourgenson playbook.
