I can't believe this guy is the relative of Sibelius. Incredible how there are still musicians running around, in any genre you can think of, who are the descendants of the fathers of music as we know it.

Lauri Porra on kyllä todella lahjakas, taitava, monipuolinen ja vaikuttava basisti! Osaa soittaa monenlaista eri musiikkigenreä ja tyyliä. Monet kutsuvat häntä myös suomen Cliff Burtoniksi. Hieno esiintyjä myöskin, joka uppoutuu musiikkiin täysin. Yksi suurimpia vaikuttajiani myös. :)

I disagree 100%billy is untouchable followed by john myung whose finger picking on bass guitar is faster than any bassist not forgetting they are both musically professional,this guy is good though, it's just an opinion 🤟🤟
@ronsdad3736

@@pzdipuing Okay, well I guess I'll give my 2 extra cents.. Well Sheehan might have been the standard for super fast bass picking (perhaps faster overall than Porra) for the longest time, (30+ years) there's not much else I have seen him do. In 1 video, I saw this guy not only outpick Sheehan, I saw this guy out funk, out and out tap Sheehan... I heard Porra's wonderful solo album and his work with many other bands.. I think if he had a little more limelight like flashes we see here Sheehan would be a thing of the past.... Also, as. a fellow DT fan and bassist of over half of my life, I think Myung is severely overrated.. He can't do much else besides pick semi-fast, and most of the time he just follows Petrucci.. Even his bass solos on Dance of Eternity and Metropolis aren't that interesting in my mind... Oh well, I guess we will have to agree to disagree..

Though I know that this conversation happened about two years ago, I gotta give my two cents to it as well. As a fellow „Dream Theater“ fan, bassist and John Myung admirer, I have to say one mostly hears him play in the context of „Dream Theater“ songs. Other bassists are shining more often in other bands, their solo music or instructional videos/lessons, whereas John Myung only did one VHS back in 1996 (if I‘m not mistaken). I love his playing, his sense of the perfect note, amount of notes and tonality. His usage of harmonics and tapping abilities is astounding to me. But yet again, I‘m not denunciating other bass players like Billy Sheehan or Lauri Porra, they are as well very inspiring and I love listening to them. It‘s all subjective at last!
@ronsdad3736

@@lukaskomann3433 I mean he had his moments... Scarred was his best performance, but he seldom showed his beautiful harmonics. Lifting Shadows off a Dream and As I Am were like the 2 songs he used them... After Train of Thought he was kinda buried under the mix. As a fellow bassist as well, he became buried beneath the surface (no pun intended). Once he stopped writing lyrics he kinda just said this is a side project.... Yeah that 1 bass cd was cool but he barely showcases the stuff like Solar Groove... I wish he did more especially considering the fact that he was in DT as long as JP... kinda sad. The mixes in DT also are bass devoid....

this is why you dont let your bassist have a solo. its just 3 minutes of a single arpeggio being played over and over with a bunch of literal punching the fretboard at random.
@FingerinUrDaughter
4 жыл бұрын
@Rasmunssi it starts out like some guy doing warmup practice, then goes into more of literally the same thing but faster and harder, as hes just sliding his hand up and down the neck playing the same pattern, and just doing bad arpeggios. he even has the audience clap along with his timing so he has a metronome to do his practice routine to. ill say hes got a great sound guy though, to turn that sloppy playing into something coherent. his actual amp probably sounds like warbled garbage.
@FingerinUrDaughter
4 жыл бұрын
@Rasmunssi you actually got my point completely wrong. im saying his actual playing is terrible, not his sound. what you hear is after its been routed through a mixer and equalizer/effects bank. you must not be a musician. the crowd clap was very clearly to help him keep in time for what was very clearly a basic practice warmup.
@FingerinUrDaughter
4 жыл бұрын
@Rasmunssi right. you just started, and thats why you dont recognize what this is: its not a solo, its something the guy plays while hes at practice, to warmup. the crowd clapping, he is using as a metronome because he cant keep time on his own when he starts playing faster and sloppier. thats why when they start to drone off, he starts losing his timing, and gets them to clap again so he can make them think he has some degree of actual skill.
@FingerinUrDaughter
