Igor Stravinsky
The Rite of Spring
1. L' Adoration de la Terre (0:05)
2. Le Sacrifice (15:20)
Eduard Van Beinum, conductor
The Concertgebouw Orchestra
Recorded on September 11, 1946
at The Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
Perhaps all one needs when approaching this recording is that it is Van Beinum and the Concertgebouw to know what to expect here. His mastery on the podium was matched by the great orchestra he was leading.
The restoration of this recording has been long overdue. Recorded direct onto 78s, it has deteriorated considerably since the 1940s in all available editions. Each segment of the recording had to be remixed and restored individually to reclaim the sound for this edition, since conventional noise reduction methods proved ineffective. Sometimes the only way to control noise is to mix it out.
In spite of the effort some deterioration remains.
Aside from our favorite recordings by Stravinsky and Monteux, there are only a few conductors who can bring out the full score of "Le Sacre" in all of its richness. Van Beinum, in our opinion, was one of them.
