@@pugmalley I hear ya! When I was a kid and a band came on a TV variety show--that's how old I am--members were usually lip-syncing and lip-playing to the recording of their hit. I was so bummed when someone pointed this out--that's how naive I was--noting the lack of cords coming off the guitars in an age before wireless. To be fair, it was mostly for time (TV was timed to the second) and because TV studios did not have the sound quality of recording studios. There's a couple of clips on KZitem, I think of The Box Tops doing The Letter and Lovin' Spoonful doing Summer in the City, where the keyboard player lifts his hands and magically his instrument keeps playing.

@@SuperChuckRaney Yup, studio recordings were "compressed" for AM radio because of the bandwidth issue. Then FM came along and made a vast improvement of the frequency range of the broadcasted tune, but people needed good equipment to take advantage of the FM signal. I love these live takes of the Stray Cats. To this day, Leon Drucker/Lee Rocker plays bass uncredited on loads of stuff, especially upright acoustic bass. His slapping compensates for the lack of a full drum kit, and the backbeat that He and Slim Jim Phantom generate in this vid is incredible. It allows Brian Setzer free range on the guitar. Playing a semi-acoustic guitar live at volume is a sound guy's nightmare, but Setzer is in total control of his instrument. Add that to the sheer energy of the song, Setzer's singing, and the showmanship of this trio, and it's what live music is all about. I know loads of people who wouldn't give the time of day for Rockabilly generally, but they love the Stray Cats, and that's all you need to know!
