Catching stocked trout! Big deal. No way you could lob heavy flies in slow water like this and catch big wild trout.......they'd be gone as soon as the fly splashed. I'm calling bullshit on this.......easy to catch fresh stockies!

Nice video & some beautiful fish. Not a criticism but why wouldn’t you get some of your slack in and fight the fish on the reel or using you hand as your drag. It seemed like you had so much line in the water & your rod up so high you ran out of a means to control the fish. My 2 cents. Tony

Jonathan -- Wouldn't it be better to quickly release the trout, then reel in the slack, walk up to the camera, and chat with the audience? Isn't it unnecessary and careless to do all the other things first, followed by some secondary attention to the survival of the trout?

Don't question a guy who puts up a video of himself catching fish right and left. Im sure he wasn't looking for advice. Whatever works for you go with it. Im not a perfect caster but sometimes I catch fish and sometimes I don't. You can easily cast streamers on a floating line with a nice stiff butt section of 20-25lb. Maxima tapered down to 10lb. Maxima or flouro tippet. but like he said, don't go longer than about 4ft. to keep your control to a max.

hey john, which streamers do you use? i bought some as i started fly fishing this year, the croal runs of the irwell and runs through a country park the inaccessable sections are long slow runs and impossible to nymph and tricky to dry fly, looking at adding streamer methods to my arsenal but have only seen dead drift and jig method. interested in the fly as all the videos i watched were in US, canada etc.

hello Jonathan, is this the upper Derwent? I was fishing the lower derwent today, could have done with a few of them streamers, fishing a nymph hooked into a little trout and as I was bringing it in a big trout come from no where and followed it all the way till I landed it.

Thanks for sharing these videos, great little river with a lot of fish. I thought your handling of the fish was great as well, wetting your hands and quick release good on you. I did notice your casting was a little to fast or rushed, remember to let the rod do the work for you, you can hear a whipping sound with a resulting loss of power transfer into the line. Even with roll casts. Keep me coming , great stuff.

Because he doesn't use his forefinger to trap the line after every cast. He actually has to grab line with his mouth (14:48) this is poor technique. He line control is poor, hook setting is poor, don't form this bad habit! He lost fish that he didn't need to lose. Video was still fun, and most of what he did was informative, so not all bad.

Your roll cast needs work. Dont drop the tip so low so that the fly can maximize distance from you. Otherwise a great video and some nice fish.

+michael laycock I quit after I got a nasty scolding from my dentist, also a fellow fly angler. I have chipped a couple teeth biting off line, and I have a couple notches in my teeth from biting off flourocarbon line. So I keep a cheap set of nippers in my pocket when I am fishing always.

Not great stripping technique. Good thing he has his teeth to grab the line after the hit. Holding the rod out to the side also puts it out of place for a good hook set and line control. Point the rod directly at the streamer for more effective hook setting.
