Thanks so much for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977). Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzitem.info/news/bejne/rah8qa2EhqiLiqA). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

I had never believed it when my professor in college, both a musicologist and professional symphony musician, himself, told me that he viewed Elvis Presley to be the greatest overall singer of all time. "Why?," "What the hell?," so many of us said? With him first going on to ask what's Frank Sinatra's greatest and/or signature song? "My Way," someone eventually said and then the professor proceeded to show us various polls from over the years which listed Sinatra as the greatest singer ever. Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin were also on top of some, and Elvis, too, on a few. But the point of the exercise was to simply show us Sinatra was considered by many, though it's subjective, to be the greatest. The class then listened to Sinatra's "My Way," and then Elvis' version, back to back. With the room being roughly split as to whose version was better, "which proved what I thought?" But then the professor showed us Elvis rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from the Elvis 1968 Comeback Special. With the point ultimately being that regardless of whose version of 'My Way" you preferred, Elvis was right there, totally at home playing in Sinatra's backyard for lack of better parlance. But as to Sinatra playing in Elvis' backyard, he said, it couldn't be done, as he said "[i]magine Sinatra, (who he totally loved) trying to do that rock number?" Then going on to say that he had found no singer who had ever sang more genres, more majestically, than Elvis, & he challenged us to find out for ourselves by looking at his full catalogue of Rock, Pop, Soul, Country, Ballads, Gospel and more. And, when done, I admit I became a convert who was so, so doubtful, at first, I can't even begin to tell you. But from rocking out to 'Trying to Get to You' from that Elvis 1968 Comeback Special, to singing about the dream of humanity coming together with "If I Can Dream," from the same show, I believe you will see what I mean. Elvis even had a voice that could be operatic if you go and listen to 'Hurt' and his version of "You'll Never Walk Alone" will tell you why he has also sold more gospel records than anyone, as well as just tons more, overall. But, with pop and 'Such A Night' to a ballad such as 'They Remind Me Too Much of You,' he did it all, and so, so damn well. While for soul, check out 'Long Black Limousine' or 'You're Wearin' That Loved on Look' which is a bit of another number. Because as Elvis' one album cover says, there's 'Something for Everybody.' Also, and if ultimately you don't think Elvis is the best, that's totally cool as there really is something for everyone!;-) Great channel and I wish you the best!!! ~ Christopher Tyler P.S. Those recommendations are only, quite literally, the beginning!

I love a song he never sang live and only partially in rehearsal called How The Web Was Woven. I’ve always been partial to that and Tomorrow Never Comes which is a powerhouse showing off his voice. I was not a screaming Elvis fan, but I have read a couple of biographies, lately, "The Last Train to Memphis" and "The Colonel" and both talk about how much he hated that suit and it took a couple of days to film the part of the special with him in the suit. There are a couple of videos of the uncut parts of him sitting down in it. He sweat so much, that it stuck to him, and it was actually made of leather. They had to rip the sems in it to get him out of it and to clean it. Austin Butler kept the one he wore in the movie. kzitem.info/news/bejne/w56ivXtssJ52qW0, and part 2, kzitem.info/news/bejne/xHmF0q6Ds5qXe4o

You should hear his original version (and everything else from "The Sun Sessions", his earliest and most important recordings, that's Elvis 101. If you don't know that stuff like the back of your hand, you don't know Elvis.) His original recording from 1955 is one of his best, everything about it, the echo, the way the guitar solo comes in......it's goose-pimple inducin. And it's a cover of a song by an obscure R&B group, The Eagles (from about 1953). And when you hear the way the singer sings the song on the original, you can hear clearly the influence on Presley's singing style. People like to babble about Elvis "ripping off" black music....but they never can tell you who. They bizarrely cite someone like Chuck Berry, who NOBODY ever thought sounded anything remotely like Elvis. But when you hear the original "Tryin' To Get To You", or stuff like Clyde McPatter or Billy Ward, you see where Elvis got his "hiccup" style. (and fused it with Dean Martin crooning and country singing and all kinds of other stuff, just like any other artist)

Elvis changed music with his radical style but you don't seem to know enough about this. This song is from the Sun Album which features all the stuff which we got turned on by in the late 1050's especially Mystery Train or You're Right I'm Left She's Gone which especially influenced people like Credence Clearwater Revival when you compare their Bad Moon Rising guitar lick - the whole package was important Scotty More on guitar, Bill Black on Bass and D.J. Fontana on the drums not the horrible parody clown suited Las Vegas Batman of his later years.
