I met an orphan 15 year old Filipino in the Provence of Antique 5 years ago. Me Heart went out to him. Before I left back to Canada I got him a cell phone and a place to live and got him back into school. He’s now 21 and in University. My only Prayer is that the people of the Philippines can also help these children. Children are Great Imitators so we should give them Something Great to Imitate...... the Love and Kindness for the less fortunate ❤️🙏

A little fact for the people watching that are non-native Tagalog speakers: During their interviews the children are still using formal Tagalog. Notice how they add "po" and "opo" in the middle of their statements. In Tagalog, those terms connote respect given by younger people when talking to their elders. These children have lots of potential and I really do hope our government will give them the chance to unleash those potential.

I was raised in a mountain tribe in the Philippines. In our culture, it is required to butcher 10 pigs and feed the entire village in a span of several days. So you also have to prepare other dishes. There isn't much space in the mountains so I guess our culture evolved to ensure that our numbers stay manageable. It also reflects in our psyche, we spend most of our youth working and not really into relationships. There is a meme about my people where a tribesman's wife ask him to tie her and do anything he wants. So he did and went back to work on his farm undisturbed. I was surprised by how horny lowlanders are when I studied in the city. They go into relationships in highschool. They constantly talk about sex openly. It was a culture shock.

Thank you for showing the world the reality of life for many poor children in the Phillipines. What really gets me is watching so many videos made by foreigners praising the Phillipines as such a wonderful place to retire and live. Yet, we see how the rich Philippine government and wealthy ruling class could care less in providing a safe, comfortable, home environment educating these youth to become productive members of society. It CAN be done and really not at great cost to society. But, the Phillipines, as well as many other countries around the world continue to believe that the best place for these children is to return them to their trash parents, despite the fact that there exists thousands of sane and intelligent individuals and families that would gladly take these children to give them a better life. But the incompetent authorities just don't care. Yet, foreigners are encouraged by videos on you tube to retire and invest in this criminal nation. To hell with the children. Here where I live in Mexico, the situation is not quite so bad, but the incompetence and disinterest by the narco authorities is quite similar. In the village where I live, many children have been murdered, abused, and suffer in poverty living with their illiterate, drugged and drunken, abusive parents, with a government that could care less, just like in the Phillipines.

Some of them also were given a house, but they sell it, buy drugs and go back to their old dirty houses. The government subsidies tho have a condition, the parents needs to make sure to send their kids to school and they are tracked. Many poor parents thinks it is too complicated and some failed to comply. You don't know much about our culture. We still have indigenous people who do not even know what poverty is until the western ideas of what is poor and rich reached them. Don't you know we have indigenous people who's part of Christmas tradition is go to the city and beg? What do you do about it? Lol. There are also indigenous who doesn't want a home because they considered everywhere, especially the sea as their home. It is a complicated society with many culture after all. Those Youth Centers need to be look into, it's so shady. If the centers are being run properly the children wouldn't run from it.
@dcardigan13

It's something rooted in the psyche too. Even addicts and street adults run away from rehabilitation centers too. Those who have actually completed their time in rehab relapse and return to old habits, get worse, get arrested, and the cycle continues. Unless these people (even kids) actually want the change for themselves, the cycle will not end. Those kids don't want to leave the life they already knew or used to, or they aren't ready to live a different life - live in a different home, lifestyle, and know people who live in a different world from the one they always knew. Edit: I see, you were referring to 22:20. I'm sorry, I was wrong. I agree with you after hearing what the boy said. I think those Youth Centers adopt the same environment and management that you'd see in prison for adults. And Boy's Town managed by psychopathic officers too

I am a Filipino citizen and a teacher. Mere punishment alone to these children (in conflict with the law) is an easy and shallow short term approach but restorative justice should be the goal if we truly see them as human beings capable of positively reorienting themselves given the guidance of caring adults. There is no short cut solution to this complex problem. It is primarily the responsibility of parents but what do we expect from them when they are not well educated and poor? It will be a repeatitive cycle for their children if the authorities and the rest of the community will not look after thier welfare and restoration.

Im a filipino, and i still grew up in that old parenting style, that beating children is the right way to discipline kids, and if they get terrible as children (drug addicted, depressed/lazy in all aspects, or end up pregnant) it's their fault for being complicated children.. Then they pass everything on the next generation.. That alone forms an ill society that can never move forward. 😢😢

Giving a child a beating is never ever a good way to discipline a child and this act in civilized countries is considered illegal / child abuse If parents teach their kids properly from a young age discipline in the right way like giving a telling off taking away their playstation or grounding them they generally grow up to become well behaved My parents never ever used physical discipline on me or my brother and sister they teach us properly and we all did well in life Even when it comes to having girlfriend's my parents teach me and my brother and sister the did and don'ts the risks and such and to use a rubber if I don't intend to have kids as well as being careful of STds and such End of the day there is no need for being strict or using physical discipline it's just a matter of teaching kids the right way

Manila is very crowded yet many people from far provinces came to this City trying to find a better life but they end up this way. My heart breaks every time I see childrens living outside a proper shelter. I am currently supporting 3 students so they could continue with their studies. I am so happy to at least there are other people even private organizations helping some childrens like them. @fellow human being i'm you Education takes money. That's across the board, every country. Common sense is not taught in school. Government collects tax/income tax. Gives it back to people in forms of hospitals, roads, bridges, social programs etc. And accept that there is certain degrees of corruption *in every country* Here are some facts. -The Chinese have less children than Filipinos. -The Chinese have been here just aslong as the Filipinos and who are the most successful and rich here? -Philippines has a higher avg family size. -The poor have more children than the rich -Only less than a third of the population pays income tax -Tax Payers pay for rebuilding due to calamities. List goes on... Tell me why, during the late 80s till 2016 was the government *WARNING* the church year over year presenting facts, studies, and having debates on TV about the reproductive health bill. What we have now is a country over populated (based on available resources/jobs, not land mass) which has grown past 45 years with little direction and vision of what is a fruitful life. Generally you can't just blame all these parents (humans) either. If you understand how the employment law works in Philippines you will understand why there are such high rate of poverty & unemployment. No.2 because many can't get a decent job, thus unable to provide a basic needs, then resulting in high numbers of uneducated & crime (need for survival). And to make things worst, because of uneducated + the nature of how GOD created Man & Woman (procreation aka sex) + contraceptive not encouraged + abortion not allowed; and lastly the compounding effect is lots of ultra poor homeless kids. Yes, and they seem to downplay the irresponsible parents. The main reason for ALL this. Irresponsible parents who like to have sex like rabbits. ANY responsible adult would not buy a dog and intentionally not give it a home and not feed it and left it to fend for itself in the streets. But I guess it felt good back then when they bought the dog so all i well I guess. To make a baby, two adults are needed. TWO. But unfortunately for these children, their parents intentionally did not provide for them food, shelter, and most importantly, give them an education so they have a future. Oh, and those same parents...won't stop at one child they let loose unsupervised on the streets. They make another baby...and another baby....and another. THEN they blame drugs, and the government for making babies... I mean for not keeping their legs closed...I mean for costing more money to feed more people that they intentionally made.

Even though this is an old documentary, the problem is still there even today. Many others have already pointed out the reasons for those problems. Political familial dynasties, church meddling in the state, lack of support for education, contraceptives, jobs, unwilling to reform or change for any progress. Politicians only doing lip service but is only there for their own greed and self interest while chipping away on democracy. Then when things aren't right or they go bad, instead of finding a solution like a capable government. They blame others like the US for their historical predicament. The way I see it is potential being squandered and wasted, many street kids could grow up and have a career which can rise up the country, but its not being done. Others say organizations can help this kids. But there's only so much those organizations can do. Either the government reforms and changes or it gets toppled by force. Which will only bring chaos and dictatorships.

You seem to not mention the parents, I mean they could just not have more kids then they can feed. I probably be the only one commenting here about the POSITIVE change on war on drugs . I came from a small village in the Philippines. Everybody knows everyone. Prior to war on drugs campaign - youths and adults succumbed to the temptation and addiction of illegal drugs { some were users while others were both ( drug peddler and user)}. Through the years - it was so rampant that it became natural to see them hanging around doing drugs in clear sight and upto to the point where there were many strangers coming in and out in our village. Majority of the children in our village do not have access to technology and toys hence they are out to play with other children , people there have no cars so school children have to walk to and from school with no company of adults for kilometres sometimes passing through sugarcane fields or crossing the river. One afternoon, tragedy happened. A 9-year old girl was raped and brutally murdered by a drug addict , who was not from my village. It shocked the entire village and scared the children. The war on drugs cleansed the drug addicts there. They are now having jobs , live a peaceful life . Every thing back to normal ( normal - kids are roaming around free from fear and only goes inside the house at 6pm because of the aswang) . This is not a false claim . You can ask me details where it happened and I'd be happy to supply you more information of course thru private message. The campaign isn't perfect but believe me , there are plenty of children/minors being saved as well

That's the time he decided to STOP. To cut the long story short, he is no longer drug addict now, my parents were reunited and we are living together.
