Rows of houses, all bearing down on me I can feel their blue hands touching me All these things into position All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again and fade out This machine will, will not communicate These thoughts and the strain I am under Be a world child, form a circle Before we all go under And fade out again and fade out again Cracked eggs, dead birds Scream as they fight for life I can feel death, can see its beady eyes All these things into position All these things we'll one day swallow whole And fade out again and fade out again Immerse your soul in love IMMERSE YOUR SOUL IN LOVE

This song is about the passage of time, and the realization that everything is effected by death. If you listen to the rhythm, it sounds like a ticking clock. Also the steady rhythm could represent a heartbeat, and symbolize how much time a person has left. The whole song seems hopeless at first, like death always happens and there is nothing we can do to change it, but it has the best redeeming quality at the end when Thom says “Immerse your soul in love”. Basically he’s saying that life is too short to live in hate, and that we need to make the most of each moment by loving each other.

I am scared of this song. really. you can get drowned in it, get desperate and hopeless and become just a shadow of yourself, who just does things, drives his car, goes to work, eat, see friends and all the other stuff, but feels nothing. empty and dark inside. that's why I always think twice before listening to it. but it's probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard, so it's hard to resist. and sometimes I doubt the whole idea of resistance. you know. because we all fade out sometime anyway. "street spirit" kind of thought.

I had an experience in a river were it felt like I was going to drown, be swept away, downstream, down into a dam and be killed, but luckily I was in no real dange. But Thor song feels like a musical interpretation of the hopeless feeling I felt when I could no longer hold onto the rock I was clinging to, and let the river take me to what I thought to be my death. The feeling of fighting something you can’t win against, and letting it take you.

The reason why people like this song despite its profoundly disturbing (disturbed?) lyrics is because the melody, pun intended, strikes a chord. It has mystique. It's haunting.

Dedicated to my Angel I am not sure why you say this is the darkest song Radiohead has because this song is one of the only songs that contributed to my seeing the hope in my life and my wanting to live when all I saw, at the time, was hopelessness and hate of myself. I failed to recognize my soul, failed to recognize how it was bigger than me and how I must perform my part in this life. I must get busy living or get busy dying. All I see, feel, smell, and hear is HOPE from this song. The tiredness of life and the hopelessness that it can become pushes us to the edge to decide of death and life. When I finally understood this is song, I understood I wanted to live loving myself instead living of hating myself. I saw hope of a real life that I want to immerse myself in love. I also started to recognize my soul, which has been neglected by my ego. I am sadden to hear people think of this song as dark because it means so much more to me of seeing HOPE of life after being hopeless for so long. Thank you for this song and for all your music. It has been embedded into me for the rest of my life.
