Simon Kingham, Professor of Geography at the University of Canterbury and Chief Science Advisor to the Ministry of Transport, shows us how streets and community wellbeing interact.
Streets are usually seen as places for motor vehicles, but what happens if we rethink their role as places that can strengthen our communities and enhance wellbeing? What happens when we change their form and function through things, such as changing traffic volumes and speeds, restricting traffic, making walking and cycling more attractive, and introducing street furniture and places for social interaction? This presentation will examine some of these types of changes that have been seen in Ōtautahi Christchurch.
