In the first video I show you five exercises how you can build up your approach step by step.
1️⃣ Exercise 1:
crescendo - decrescendo. As the volume gets louder, a little more lip tension is required because we are increasing the air pressure. We'll start this exercise on a tone that's comfortable for you and slowly get louder. Make sure that your throat remains open and that the pressure is not caused by squeezing in the throat. The way you feel your lips is just as important, try to stay as relaxed as possible. We start in mp and get louder up to fortefortissimo, then decrescend back to mezzopiano.
2️⃣ Exercise 2:
scale game. Take a good starting note, e.g. the g1. Now you play upwards, paying attention to neck and lip tension again, up to g2. If you feel your lips becoming tighter or more activated, play back to the g1. You can extend this scale at any time by playing one, two, etc. notes higher and of course playing back to g1.
3️⃣ Exercise 3:
We stick to our scale, but add a sustained tone to it. Play up again, but now you hold your top tone for four counts and return to your starting tone. Expand your tonal space by one tone the next time you try it, another tone the next time, etc.
4️⃣ Exercise 4:
We'll stick with the scale game, but move chromatically for now. This time start higher, e.g. on the c2 and play up again. Now play quickly and try to master the scale up to your top note three times in one breath.
5️⃣ Exercise 5:
A pure strength exercise. For this exercise you only need a pencil, not a plastic pen. Take the blunt end between your lips and grasp the end of the pencil with your lip muscles. Caution: The end of the pin does not lie between the teeth! Try to actively maintain the tension of the lips for as long as possible. Tightening is the motto! The chin muscles pull down. Any other muscular activity should be avoided. Often the nostrils, the tongue or the chewing muscles also tense up, which should be avoided at all costs.
Hold the pen upright with one hand, as releasing it will pry the upper lip. That would be counterproductive or even harmful!
Always do this exercise at the end of your practice day and give the muscles time to regenerate.
