This is an excellent point. And discussed well by you both. There is a lot of disussion about "strengthening the fingers" with technical exercises, then some folks, including myself, stringently avoid the Hanon mode. Yet, a point you made in a video many years ago that the muscles, very small ones, in the hand, palm, fingers, need to be strengthened, a longer process that does not look like weightlifing for the piston style fingers, but happens naturally over time when contact is well practiced, in musical passages strictly in my case. Love your emphasis on role of imagination and your detailed observation of what is happening for others, you answer with confidence before the question is finished. Big time advice and your suggestion to add double beat to the note helps: "Practice like a snail, play like a cheetah." Rach. "Practice slowly" is always the comment added with which Perelman signg his autographs.

@@pianotechnique FYI note. Was looking at/reading thru a new piece today which has accompanying LH rotating 8vas 5-1then 1-3, 1-4, 1-3, 1-2 before repeating the 16th note broken chords pattern. Didn't take long, maybe 10 bars before I realized that the fat muscle between the 2 lower thumb joints was sore, like painful when using it elsewhere. Humm. Mortensen always says, "If it hurts, it's wrong." Quickie analysis made me realize I wasn't rotating on the 8va with forearm and wrist; was playing it with fingers only, hand/wrist stiff. Started hurting pretty quick. Thought I was past such as this. Apparently noooot! Anyway, fun stuff. The result told me quickly there was something wrong. At least I'm that far.

I wrote a longer comment on this excellent discussion. Somehow erased it accidentally. Will come back on this one. Lots of vital stuff here.
