I know what you mean--I was 63 once myself. Just a kid with a dream. But at 73, I've pretty much gotten over the idea that that's old or that age, per se, is an obstacle to anything. Sixty-four is a really good age to knuckle down and start getting on with things. Like Music! Yeah! When you and I were kids, we didn't have anybody like Kent to help us out with this stuff; now we have. Talk about lucky!

Beautiful lesson Kent! You give such a clear demonstration of how you can progress starting from one note to building up harmonies and octave/tenths stride movements. For me as a beginner, its a really slow process and it’s hardest to wrap my head around inverting chords, dropping notes, removing notes, altering notes, or just shifting the basic structure from 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 when building notes and thinking about voice leading. I still feel like I’m at a point where I need to shift my pinky down a half step to find the b9, and it’s already too late. I feel like I’m making too many calculations! Starting with a simple line cliche like in this progression, it helps to understand the voicings and that they shouldn’t always be with a root as lowest note in bass. You also had me an enlightening moment going from the C chord to the E7. I tend to automatically think of octave or tenths relative to root note. If I see E7, I think E G# B D / 1 3 5 b7 voiced in that order, right now it takes too much time for me to then rearrange or alter those intervals. It started to make sense seeing the chromatic movement in your excellent progression that a 10th could also start from the 3rd or 5th relative to its root. 🙈🙌❤️
