String bean was a true class act. A gentle, humble, modest soul you can't find anymore. He was one of a kind. My goodness, he is missed. This world needs more string beans!!!

One of the most perfect records ever made! I would go as far as to say that this is one of country music's five definitive masterpieces. Stringbean is greatly, greatly missed.

There was only one string bean. No one could ever compare to him. A true class act. Country music, banjo picking not the same with out string. My heart still aches for his and Estelle's loss.

I think it’s rarin and a pitchin , at least Lester Flatt sings it that way, and Lester likely knew Bean personally. If you consider the context of the song, barn yard pickin, String is inviting the boys away from the house “Come on boys and make less noise while the old folks sleepin” , probably Uncle Bill was pitchin a fit (an angry outburst) , “rarin and a pitchin” because of the noisy banjer pickin , I can picture him complaining about being able to hear the banjer pickin upstairs downstairs and out in the kitchen

earls 3 finger roll is a different entity. string bean an grandpa jones did that claw hammer style as well...especially Grandpa jones
@budahbaba7856

Ya, speaking for myself, on one hand, "three-finger" comes pretty natural on the banjo, as far as picking goes -more natural than "two-finger" in my opinion. However, i find that since i usually frail (clawhammer), when i do finger picking instead, my three finger tends to always alternate thumb strokes between any finger stroke just like you would do in a two finger or clawhammer style. Thus, instead of picking patterns of Thumb, index, middle etc, in the syncopated rolls that Earl Scruggs & others made popular in the 1940's; i fall back to thumb, index, thumb, middle, etc, or some permutation of that like the banjo picking of the prohibition era. But of coarse, it depends a lot on the material too. Nothing is hard & immutable. A person's playing changes over time. When i first started banjo as a teen, i crammed in as many slides, hammers, chokes, & pull-offs, & other tricks as i could. Now, thirty years later, i like to just let the banjo clothe itself in its own beautiful simplicity, & tell its own story in its own silvered language without me telling it how to say it.
