Shanghai Xinchang Ancient Town, located in Pudong New Area, is an ancient water town in the south of the Yangtze River with a history of more than 800 years. It used to be a prosperous salt field and salt market, and now retains a large number of Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings, showing a tranquil and simple style.
**Historical evolution**:
Xinchang Ancient Town was built in the middle of the Tang Dynasty and was built in the second year of Jianyan in the Southern Song Dynasty (1128). In the Yuan Dynasty, Xinchang established the Liangzhe Salt Transport Office and became the largest town on the Pudong Plain at that time. Its prosperity once exceeded that of Shanghai County.
**Architectural pattern**:
The ancient town maintains the style and characteristics of the traditional Jiangnan water town in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China, with Xinchang Street and East and West Hong Street as the cross skeleton, traditional buildings as the texture, and river network as the support. The four rivers in the town divide the old town into a "well" shape. There are more than 20 houses with more than three entrances and nearly 100 ancient houses on both sides of the river.
**Main attractions**:
**Jiale Hall**: A Qing Dynasty building with a three-entry structure. The hall has carved beams and painted rafters, and the front and back ceremonial gates are complete. It is a typical courtyard.
**Xinlong Pawnshop**: Now it is the Xinchang Historical and Cultural Exhibition Hall.
**Pan's North House**: Originally there were seven entrances, and now there are five entrances. The second entrance is still in the second entrance. The second entrance is a two-story building with five li shell windows.
**Min's Old House**: An early Qing Dynasty building, the ceremonial gate with a full brick structure is well preserved.
**Diyilou Tea Garden**: A century-old teahouse with a unique three-story riverside building style, it is a district-level cultural relic protection unit.
**Dongyue Temple**: Built in the Ming Dynasty, it has been a Taoist temple for many years and is the seat of the Nanhui Taoist Association.
**Nanshan Temple**: An ancient temple with a history of 700 years, built in the tenth year of the Yuan Dynasty (1307), it is very popular.
**Cultural Heritage**:
Xinchang prospered because of salt, and its culture also prospered because of the prosperity of the economy. Chen Chun, deputy envoy of Songjiang Branch and Xinchang Salt Field in the Yuan Dynasty, wrote "Ao Bo Tu Yong", 52 poems with 52 paintings, which fully describe the whole process of salt making. The author's sympathy for the miserable life of salt farmers is revealed between the lines.
**Tourism Information**:
Xinchang Ancient Town is open all year round, and some attractions require tickets to enter. The ancient town is not big, and a narrow old street, several water lanes and small alleys basically become the whole of the ancient town. There are also many historical sites in the ancient town, such as the "Zhang's House" with four courtyards built in the late Qing Dynasty, the first floor tea garden built in the Tongzhi period of the Qing Dynasty, and the Church of Jesus, Dongyue Temple, China Bronze Gong and Drum Art Museum and other attractions.
Xinchang Ancient Town is a place full of historical charm, suitable for those who like to explore ancient culture and enjoy a quiet life. You can take a leisurely stroll here, feel the historical atmosphere of the ancient town, taste local food, and experience the unique charm of the Jiangnan water town.
